No, even with 5 more minutes we wouldn't win.

We just couldn't kick a score, very bad to be honest, expect better of AFL standard players.

Agreed.

With a further 5 minutes left we would not have won. We have would kicked it 5 times to Quaynor, 3 times to Moore, we would’ve kicked 1 behind, 2 out on the full and then some Collingwood small forward would’ve iced the game just before the siren.

Wasn’t our night tonight.

Maynard took out an unprotected player with malice.  A smothering act involves the hands and arms attacking the actual football.  To do that to a player kicking the footy takes high risk courage and that's why we rarely see it happen

All we saw was Maynard doing everything but use his hands and arms to smother the football.  You can't just charge into a player like that as it's unduly rough play

He should get at least 4 or 5 weeks but knowing the MRO, he might even get off

What he did can't be justified as he didn't go low to smother ... in fact, what he did was go high (nowhere near the footy) and therefore cleaned up Brayshaw at head height

Too many times Oliver just bombed long it into the F50. Couldn't he just lower his eyes occasionally?

My favourite is when he actually has time and doesn't even bother to look down the field when he kicks it.  I'd love to be a forward to that.

Maynard is gone for two weeks minimum, regardless of intentional or not.

Head high.

High impact.

Thats two weeks. If then deemed intentional it will rise to 4.

The only positive to come from tonight is knowing Maynard will miss out on a premiership this year. I hope it haunts him for the rest of his life. Worthless piece of [censored].

By definition Maynard was careless by jumping into a smother directly at the player and then chooses to lift his shoulder to connect with Brayshaw’s head.

It’s careless and impact was severe = 3 weeks. Maynard and his defenders like Dangerfield can get [censored].

They will argue he had time only to react instinctively. I’m not saying that’s true, but it will be the defence, and he’ll get the benefit of the doubt I think. That he’s a thug footballer is true enough however. Cox too.

Yep, but you can already see Collingwood biased media trying to get him off, and on other hand crucifying stupid act by van rooyen, one player knocked out !!

Other gets up and kicks 2, difference??

Can't fault our mental toughness, heart and desire to compete. It's admirable for sure and says a lot about how far we've come and the kind of culture we've created. Clearly we're respected.

Ultimately we lost the game in a way that has been a trend for how long now? Too long. Years.

Oliver is a great example tonight of what too many of our players do. Bomb shallow, high, sometimes long. Just zero composure. That was as close to as the most non-infliential 30 touch game I've seen from someone and he gave aw

And for those saying Maynard should get weeks, you have no idea. He jumped in the air to smother. That was the football action. And once in the air, could not do a thing to stop his body colliding into Brayshaw's.. Extremely unfortunate for Gus and Melbourne supporters, but if you cannot see it for what it is, you have a serious Melbourne bias and just completely unreasonable. Some of the comments on here are hilariously embarrassing.

Maynard is scum, but he actually did nothing wrong.

Hard disagree.

Plenty of other options available. Took the opportunity to level someone out because it was there under the protection that your kind of analysis provides.

I do agree he will definitely get off. Channel 7 set the agenda immediately. You could tell at half time Dangerfield felt it was unacceptable but didn't want to upset the apple cart

You mean head high and high impact like when Tom McCartin unintentionally broke McAdams cheekbone?  Didn’t McCartin get off.

Come off it Jimmy.

pretended to smother and turned the shoulder into Brayshaw's Jaw.

Gutless crunt.

Jumping forward like that didn't make sense unless he was trying to make contact. I'd have to look again but I don't think he was near smothering that kick.

What hurts is the thing we all feared would cost us a final did. Completely unacceptable forward structure and execution. Embarrassing back to back straight sets now on the cards. The players really let us down tonight. The first quarter was quite pathetic really given what was at stake.

Thought May and mcvee played well. Didn't rate anyone elses game

I’m not saying our forwards aren’t to blame but not all the blame is theirs.

We have no ability to bring the ball to ground or get the ball out the back because the delivery is [censored]. They take too long and the opposition sets up.

Case in point is Rivers kicking wide to Gawn at the death who dink kicks and fails by turning it over. Riv should have roosted it into the danger area and hope our smalls would pick it up.

Was right behind the goals, right next to the horrific assortment of homo-sapiens (at best) in the Collingwood cheers squad, so got to watch our “forward line” up close.

My takeaway was that we are not going anywhere further this season if that’s what our best “forward line” is.

Fritsch was unable to present to any would-be deliverers. Absolutely out-muscled or out-positioned when it mattered. That kick for goal in the last quarter will, and absolutely should, haunt him.

JVR had stage fright. Can accept this. He’s young.

Tmac was a waste of a jumper. Would have even preferred Schache out there, let alone Grundy. But I can see what will happen. He’ll play next week and kick three, then should we be fortunate enough to win, will play again in the prelim and will go missing. That’s been his pattern for a while now. He’s been a great player for us, but I hope he has the grace to understand it’s time to call it.

Pickett. He’s not a bad player if you have zero expectations of him. Unfortunately he’s been touted as something much more than that, so just continues to disappoint.

Viney will be angry at himself for his game tonight, which means I don’t have to be.

Trac was needed much earlier in the game, as was Clarry. First quarters from both of them were sub-standard. Also Clarry should be banned from set shots.

Joel Smith needs to play forward next week. Defenders can get by without him.

Salem has really disappointed since returning. Looks like half the player he was, and Langdon similarly seems to have really dropped off.

Some have said our selections were poor, but the cupboard is bare. If there is a sliver of hope it’s going to need to come from Oliver and Trac who just didn’t do their jobs properly tonight. Max took a a quarter to get going, but I’ll go easy on him because he continually has to do the work of two men each game. Incredible moments from him throughout, though his brain fade in the last quarter was costly.

Mason Cox is a detestable priq, as is Maynard.

Oliver’s stats on paper look pretty impressive. 31 touches, 742 metres gained and 10 tackles for negligible influence on the game. Still gets the ball but looks slow and not as decisive as he was before injured.

I know everyone on here loves Oliver but honestly his kicks go nowhere. His kicking for goal is awful to.

As for the commentary on Maynard from Channel 7 etc, that’s a total disgrace. Maynard was in the air granted, but who in this age of footy turns their shoulder to bump mid air rather than putting the hands or arms out instead to brace for impact. It was a dog act from a dog bloke.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
