Took him a year or three too long to realise he wasn't being valued and he was on the completely wrong timeline to his club.

Am I only one thinking that we should be looking at this? Surely he wouldn't eat up too much of our salary cap?

Could Goldstein and Gawn play in the same team? Who knows? Saying that, I think Goldstein offers more as a forward than Grundy.

But with Grundy seemingly Sydney bound, a back up ruck is a must for us in this off season. Verrell and KFW are still a minimum two seasons off senior selection and playing 20+ games a season isn't going to get any easier for Maxy.

Can we sell Goldstein the idea of being a back-up or playing more of a 2nd ruck/forward role? Again, who knows? But its worth a phone call in my opinion.

Not against this if his body checks out, he’s happy to play backup and not get paid much. Realistically he won’t want that. At his age he will want game time and he is unlikely to get that at Melbourne ahead of Gawn.
Can we play forward? 😂

i'd go in for big goober crossley from southport. was the next big thing at gcs until his drug ban, he's only 23 but is a huge boy and would be desperate for any second chance at the level including sitting behind gawn. plus would be 25 by the time gawns body is rooted and can take over for 5-7 years himself as you can never be so sure on young ruck draftees being successes long term and regardless its hard to say either KFW or verrell will be ready in 2 years at 21, not many no1 rucks are

He didn’t look in AFL shape in last year VFL final, did he look any better this year?

I think this makes real sense for us. Won’t play most weeks but worthy of decent contract as cover for Max and maybe ruck coach afterwards. We might have to guarantee him a certain number of games but given Maxxys age that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Great number 2 while we bring Verrall along. Him learning from Max, Goldy and Grundy can only be a good thing.

Also allows us to cash in on Grundy and spend the profits elsewhere.

A bit like Sinatra, Max could play out his twilight years in rucking duets with his industry peers.

Get Goldstein in. i’m sure he’s not too old to learn to play fwd

It’s an obvious NO.

i think everyones been watching season 23 with their eyes closed SONS

we're discussing a bloke whos given 15yrs of service to one club who doesn't want to play 2s football and everyones suggesting we bring him in to play 2s. if he wanted to do that he'd just stay at norf???

if theres any ruckman who's going to leave their club it'd be soldo as i cant see ooze playing 2 rucks ever after the shambles he's witness unfold at MFC

I've said it elsewhere, but we need to be signing Max's replacement now for 1-2 years of education, and then stepping up to be number 1 ruck. I can't see the value to bringing in another stopgap option, unless he's happy to play for free.

Is that a maybe?

Sign doesn't have enough red in it, I'm taking it as a soft 'no'.

An undervalued 22-24yo ruck who's got a developed body would be perfect, if they're any good there's a permanent position there for them for the next 6 - 8 years.

I guess that includes Collingwood then. 🤷‍♀️

Just because the “experiment” didn’t work out this year doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be tried again with a different ruckman. After all, it’s amazing how important a role personalities play in such things.

I think we need a projectile vomit emoji after seeing that image.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
