Players in blue bold seem not to be eligible to play

It seems to me that it would make sense if players could be deemed eligible to play on application by the club if special circumstances applied e.g. player genuinely returning after an injury.

    The interesting one for me, if he's eligible, is Salem.

    If it's his health causing his form dip then obviously he gets the week off. If it's just form I'd be giving him the run at Casey. Send a message and hopefully gets him and easy kill.

    Surely Laurie and Turner both play. I'd give Smith the week off, purely due to his injury history, it's too big a risk.

    No way do Salem or Joel Smith who have been regularly playing for Melbourne in the second half of the season, get to play VFL this week.

    On the AFL site, Ben Brown is shown as a “test” so I suggest that he will be given a further opportunity to prove his fitness and prospects of playing AFL finals further down the track.

    Michael Hibberd is also being shown as a “test” though he might not have qualified under what are believed to be the rules. Perhaps, a request for exemption might be warranted on the basis of his return from injury?

    There was a rule that a player returning from injury could play as long as the senior team was playing or still involved in finals.

    Big issues on Saturday are who will not be picked due to a possibility they might be needed on Thursday and, worse, if any players are directed to play limited minutes.

    As far as I know if the seniors are in the finals any player on the list is eligible to play in the ressies. Once the senior team is out of finals the vfl qualification rules apply.

    Tmac is best when he is jumping for marks.  It would be good for him to have a run and just have a go at some.  Even just hitting packs hard.

    For those attending....

    Parking is easily found in the service road that starts at the St Francis Xavier Church. From there it's a 200 metre stroll to the ground. Take a fold up chair or picnic rug. There's a nice grass hill behind the goals and a smaller grassed area on the flank area. Not much space behind the other goal (permanently shaded) or along the Middleborough rd side but if the ground is full it's okay. There's a small grandstand.

    Catering is standard.

    With a crowd beyond say 3-4k it would be crowded but miles better than say Punt Rd.

    For those that don't usually go to VFL games, I can thoroughly recommend it. This should be a great game, you get to see players that are on the fringe and champs like T Mac etc.

    A real bonus is you simply don't get the nuff nuffs that you get at AFL matches.

    In the years I've been watching VFL I can't remember any bad crowd behaviour...not that I am at all sensitive but just don't need the garbage.

    Kids have a kick during breaks and you can buy a can of beer if that is your go.

    Macca...similar to Fritta.  If it wasn't a final, possibly.  Regardless he is more than likely to get the call up to replace Smith who will probably return as the sub.

    A half for Hibbo would be a handy warm up if they're looking for him to come in to cover Elliot.  If not then there's no reason why he couldn't play out the entire match.

    Agree with NS re Tomo.  He's a long way ahead of Disco at this point.  His prep not great though having not played for weeks now.  Strange decision to bring in Disco vs the Swans but what's done is done.

    There was a procedure i recall reading about decades ago where a non invasive injection of a gell-like fluid is injected into the knee joint.

    Was said to be capable of providing significant relief in the short-term to sufferers of bone on bone knee issues in some cases.

    Believe the technical term is viscosupplementation.

    Wonder if we've looked into that at all?

    I wrote this about Fritta before it was said, he had a moon boot on.

    He looked good against the Swans, had beautiful leading patterns, and was sharp with ball.

    Not too worried, just hope he pulls up well after the Colly AFL game now.

    Be interesting to see who they play.

    FWIW, this was the rule that applied in 2019:-

    “In order to be eligible, each player must have played at least one AFL, VFL or Development game in 2019. If they have played an AFL home and away match after the 1st of July, they must have played at least six VFL games during the season to remain eligible.”

    Keep reading a bit further...you will get to the part where it deals with what happens where the AFL team is still in finals.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
