I think there's 3 broad alternatives this week, in addition to Oliver for JJ or Harmes which applies in all 3:

In: Grundy Out: Petty
Positives: Retains the extra mid we have and allows us to sub Grundy (Hibberd as sub)
Negatives: Relies on Max/Grundy forward

In: Tomlinson or Hibberd Out: Petty
Positives: Retains the extra mid we have (Tomlinson or Hibberd as sub)
Negatives: Relies on Smith forward (which may be better than Gawn/Grundy). Means JVR has to ruck significant minutes - he did 37% vs North.

In: Tomlinson/Hibberd and Grundy Out: Petty, JJ/Harmes (so both of them are out, one for Oliver and one for Grundy)
Positives: Gives us Gawn/Grundy and Smith forward
Negatives: We lose the extra mid (but would have JJ or Harmes as sub)

As you know, I'm for the third one.

I just want to see Smith back as sub because he was an amazing sub, Oliver for Harmes, Tomlinson for Smith and send down back, Grundy for Petty and just give it a shot again.  Plays forward, doesn't interrupt Gawn's game, is second ruck, how bad can it be he's a pretty decent footballer...just hope he can kick straight!

Agree Smith is the perfect sub. He already jumps higher and uses his athleticism advantages really well. These strengths are even more pronounced against tired players late in a third or fourth qtr

#10 skip your notice fr_ap? He's been pretty handy.

He’s been very very good in the middle. Amazing when Gus is playing well not many seem to praise him. When he makes an error or two like every other player he gets bagged constantly by the same ones.

Last week’s electrifying performance, makes it two in the last four weeks.

I thought Goody normally does his presser at our main training session? It’s today isn’t it?

I can’t remember which reporter it was but they suggested that Goody would be doing his presser on Friday

Will edit post if I can dig it up

I used to think the same of Ben Brown when at North. Which is why I wasnt that keen on getting him, as it turns out he is now a Dees premiership player.

in 2018 he kicked 61 goals with 48 frees for.

in 2019 he kicked 64 goals and got 44 frees for.

I might be wrong, but I think in one of those years, he kicked 41 goals from free kicks.

Without looking at any stats from his time at the Demons he seems to get more frees on average than any of our other key forwards but less than other forwards at other clubs and less than he used to get at North.

Obviously because he’s a Demon now and I am very one eyed.

An awful lot of softies there.

Melksham would have kicked 5 on the weekend if he was umpired the same way.

Grundy should make a return to the seniors , I think he has the X-factor. Smith based on past game disposals would find it hard to get a game however he should play.

Did I just see Charlie Dixon is out for Port for 4wks with a foot fracture

Yes according to C7

Also they said in: Clarrie and Grundy

out: Petty and Harmes

Great ins. Glad to see Grundy back (and the 🐐 as well of course).

Where will we play Smith? I hope we put him forward, though it leaves May and Lever as our only tall defenders, making it harder for them to zone off...

Oliver in for JJ or Harmes

I reckon Grundy is in but under what system?  Gawn has to be the main man in the ruck unless we want to give him a breather prior to the finals

At a guess it's Grundy to ruck 40% of the time, maybe 15% on the bench with 20% forward & 25% back

Gawn 60% rucking, 25% forward & 15% on the bench

Which means we might need another tall forward or Petracca plays forward more (with Clarrie back) And Smith can be used forward when applicable

That will leave Brayshaw & Viney as being predominantly used on the ball (Brayshaw is in good form so why change his role?)

We can always push Kozzie & Petracca into the middle when the any of the main 3 are having a spell.  Sparrow to be used sporadically at the stoppages as well

Hibberd to be the sub again

I hope Gawn plays a fair bit forward and shows something when he's there. I understand he's a fantastic ruckman and is blowing teams out of the water in that area in Grundy's absence, but part of his role in the Gawn/Grundy partnership is to play forward as well, and he has underperformed in that just as much as Grundy has.

They both need to lift their forward game if this is to work like it needs to over the next couple of months.

    TRAINING: Monday 20th January 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
