Sparrow is a pretty big out for us. He has been superb in Clarrie's absence.

Agreed. His defensive work is huge. I hope he's just being rested (we're not allowed to use the word managed anymore) and he's back the following week.

JJ will get more mid minutes as a defensive mid and less at half forward, where he struggled to impact last week.

I wonder if that means we bring Spargo in or if we simply bring Harmes in for Sparrow. The latter is probably the go.

I have lost faith in Petty this year. Im not surprised its just me BTW. But after one half of good football so far this whole year, why does he again get picked?

I’ve got Viney ripping it out of the hands of Howe to put us 37 points up after we were 36 points down in the second quarter.

Possibly more likely

So no choice at all really then dazzle. Was always coming to the Dees with those options.

He would have been getting more game time at Essendon right now. But they were a rabble so I understand why he chose us. Still a risky move, when you can’t get a game for a bottom side so you decide to come to a premiership winning midfield full of players in their prime.
I doubt he thought he’d be a walk up start, and I doubt we gave him that impression. If we did, then that’s poor from us.

Apparently Grundy is so good that  he learnt forward craft in one week at Casey and a practise match.

Put that in ya hat Bucks

Harmes is going to need to start delivering some seriously good games if he wants to play in September. With Sparrow and Clarry a lock, he’s really on the very edge of best 23.

It’ll be Harmes and Petty in for Brown and Sparrow.
50/50 line ball between McVee and Hibbo. I would go Hibbo personally.

Because if we’re to win the flag Perry’s in the team

Don't disagree on Petty forward and have pushed for this before, BUT....how fit is he?

That's my concern.

I reckon he’d be very fit. Just needs some match conditioning

Serious question Dunstan v Harmes - can Dunstan tag?

Haven't seen either of them playing a  run with or tagging role at Casey.

If they have it must have been a very very loose version as i haven't noticed any serious attention being paid to a particular opponent.

Not that there is a huge necessity for the above at VFL level most weeks.

In terms of two way running and general ability to get from contest to contest, Harmes probably has the edge.

However, in general play, especially in contested, congested play, extraction for first use, clean chains of possessions and accurate distribution to receivers in the clear by hand, Dunstan is a fair way ahead of Harmes (to this point) imv.

Both players are about a 50/50 proposition by foot so a neutral outcome there.

The club obviously see our tall fwds as Petty and JVR. Petty was starting to look very good forward before he go injured.

We need a big senior body up there who can compete. Brown showed he couldn't do that on the weekend

We need someone who can take marks and kick goals, that is the job of a key fwd. Can anyone remember how many games he played as a fwd this year? I can’t but he’s only kicked the 4 goals. People like Smith as the sub because he can play fwd or back, so can Petty. I’d like to see Smith get a full game up fwd with JVR and Petty can be the sub.

Which means hes not fit! Personally I feel Petty is OVERATED !

I agree with that.  The FD are probably wanting to bring in Petty though to take Balta.  Trouble is he will only be (likely) more effective at that side of the role than Smith if he's at peak fitness.

Is he at peak fitness?   Pretty sure Smith is.

He’s not over rated. He’s in our best 22. We’ve got top 4 locked. It’s all about getting the team cherry ripe for September. He needs games, my preference is forward with Tomlinson back.

Why do we always give up a goal on the siren 🤣🤣

I'm with Demon Spurs and have Petty as the sub and leave Smith forward; he did a pretty good job.

Therefore the bench is

[40] Taj Woewodin, [41] Judd McVee, [29] Joel Smith and maybe [4] Harmesy who has failed to perform recently.

Give Grundy another week's spell.

As much as I like Smith, I couldn't have him in ahead of petty - regardless of where petty plays

Righting the wrongs of the post King's Birthday dropping of Tomlinson

Still don't mind Brown, but it's clear his body doesn't allow him to play four quarters

JVR & Petty is the pair to settle on for this season, no reason it can't work when you have Fritsch (hopefully), Trac, Pickett, Chandler surrounding them

Grand Final 2023

1/4 Time Pies lead by 28

Half Time

Collingwood 9.8.62

Melbourne 6.11.47

3/4 Time Pies lead by 21. Tomlinson subbed out, Petty moved back, Smith bought on. Demons pile on  9 unanswered goals with Smith kicking 3. Dee’s by 37. Highlight being Melbournes last goal, Viney tearing the ball out of Howes arms and slotting it through.

How about we jump out of the blocks against the Pies and lead by 6 goals at quarter time

60 points ahead at half time, 90 at 3/4 time and then we go on and win by 118

Grundy B.O.G with 9 goals

"There's got to be a bit of sport in this for all of us."

If he does come in, let’s hope Petty plays a good game and is up forward. In 2023 our backline has performed better with Tomlinson. May and Lever seem to have more confidence to leave their man and intercept more effectively when he’s there instead of Petty. Our backline is nicely settled and I’d rather not disrupt it. The forward line is in flux, so try Petty there again if he must play.

By contrast, Petty in 2023 has been below average and not deserving of a spot in the best 22. He’s clearly capable and should be in our team, but he’s not performed or earned it this year. Here’s hoping he finds form when it matters and turns his season around.

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
