Good news.  His presence makes Lever better.

And the stats back it up.

From the round 19 Richmond game onwards Lever took 29 marks in the 3 games that Tomlinson played. Lever took just 13 marks in the 4 games that Tomlinson didn't play.

Tomlinson allowed to Lever and May to play good to very good games against Carlton, and those 3 were far from the reason we lost albeit TDK got a hold of Tommo for a bit of the first half.

I still won’t be surprised if he’s at another club next year.

One of Goody’ biggest mistakes this season was to drop Tommo after the win against the Filth where he was outstanding. To bring in an unfit Petty to play down back at Geelong cost us the 4 points & a crack at top spot. For mine he is a keeper until Daniel Turner is ready.

Terrible decision it just stifles Turner's development.

As I said in another thread this isn’t a good decision.

He’s soft, moves like treacle and plays without any flair or dare. He can only (barely) match up on 2m donkeys and the game isn’t going to get any slower. Nor are May or Lever going to get any quicker.

Key backs have a strong success rate in mature agers and delisted players. Ok, Kye Turner hasn’t worked out, have another go.

And above everything I just don’t think Tommo is happy. He wants to play regularly and barring a dramatic form turn around or injury to May and Lever he’s not going to.

Have I missed this? Has Kye Turner been delisted?

No and not saying he will be he couldn’t have had a worse first year unfortunately.

For the most part I enjoy your posting, especially regarding list management, however I think you've missed the mark here.

KPDs don't need to play with "flair or dare" - in fact, I'd prefer they didn't *cough* Sam Frost *cough*. Agree pace is an issue now, but I feel he barely put a foot wrong this season (outside of the Hawthorn game) and was probably mismanaged (dropped after the KB game when he shouldn't have been). He's solid enough and lifts the performace of the entire defensive unit when he plays.

Also, your last point is flat out wrong. I've spoken to his family today an can confirm he's more than happy to stay. I also think he'll play most of the season if fit next year - regardless of whether Lever and/or May are fit.

I don’t like the decision but I do have faith that if Disco can string an uninterrupted preseason together he’ll get first (and many) chances.

Reckon he makes the whole back line look better and more balanced.

I think this is Melb playing hard ball with Adel,  and saying that McAdam isn't enough for Tommo so a deal will need to be done separately.

I think we will trade Tommo but we wont pay any of his contract which clubs will want us to do.

As such good.

Doesn't guarantee him anything.  Will still have to earn spot. Just means he's one of a pool to draw upon.

I read it as nothing more than that tbh.

Good summary DeeS Yes we must put time into Disco. Really should have been selected for 10/12 games on what he did vs Swans. Sure injury stalled Disco but he should he first choice before Tommo. Both May even play together. I am not so sure Disco couldn't handle some HFFlankers as well. If Disco had those dozen games he might genuinely be ready for AFL from Round 1. Maybe he will do a Juddy and be ready.

Hope Jed comes back with 7/8 kilos on ready for a big jump in performance. Has shown some good patches.

It's depth also .

We have Tomlinson either in the best 22, or able to immediately step in and perform.

We have Daniel Turner who dominates VFL but may need another preseason to step right in.

We then have Jed Adams and Kye Turner developing in the VFL.
I’ve heard very little about how these two have looked this year… anyone able to comment?

No, I don't think we screw around with players' psyche like that. If he's been told he's required then that's what it is.

I hope we do keep him, his contract is only 1 more year so the $$ doesn't mean anything.  and he is the perfect back up

That’s unlikely to happen. We’ve had the best if not the second best defensive back six in the AFL for a reason over the past few seasons. Tomlinson hasn’t been a first choice in it for a reason. No sleight on him, he just happens to be solid depth and provides a specific match up option in certain games. May, Lever, Tomlinson as a permanent fixture is too slow a grouping to carry into most games.

exactly

With Petty planned forward the role is there for him if he is playing well enough, I suggest moreso with Hibberd retiring. He is in contract. We like playing three talls and we dont want to be relying on Turner or Adams to play the role for most/parts of the year. This also doesnt mean we don't pick a mature back from a state league as well.

Don't be surprised, that if he gets a better than one year offer elsewhere, we trade him.

But we don't know the private conversations.

If he wants a longer contract and we have refused, this could be the ploy to get one for him.

Jed is a fair way off and Kye has hardly played and is a long way further off.

Everything seems to point to him staying, including Cal Twomey's tweet and he is usually right.

Totally different players. Besides if Turner is good enough, one more year for a 30+ year old defender is going to change nothing.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #42 Aidan Johnson

The VFL premiership player was recruited from Werribee to alleviate Melbourne’s forward line woes and give a chop out in the ruck, but he managed only five senior matches in his first season at the club. At times, he was a dominant force at VFL level.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #44 Luker Kentfield

An exciting young key forward, Kentfield was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft but has yet to make his AFL debut. He was sidelined by a severe bout of pneumonia over the summer, which consequently limited his pre-season. Upon his return a month into the season, he commenced in defence but ultimately impressed with his progress at Casey, particularly in the latter part of the season as a strong marking goal kicking forward.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.
