    Also, that AFL article on his rising star nod notes nothing about the sorts of opponents he's had this year. Choco and Chaplin should get great credit for their development of our young backs. How Judd's so seamlessly fitted into the system back there is so exciting.

    Think you are underesting how difficult it is to play midfield. The backline was a great place to start where he could first use his silky skills to mop up and later develop his one on one defending. He has a simple role and is doing it brilliantly.

    Throwing him the midfield so late this year may do more harm than good. He is slightly built and would be purely outside. 

    I remember about five years ago when they tried Salem in the midfield. It didn't work. Let's maybe revisit in a year or so.

    I think his 'then-to-now' arc bears comparison with Clayton Oliver's draft-year-to-first-year arc.

    And aren't a lot (most? all?) of our players, like Judd, so watchable?!

    I loved the fact that he was deliberately matched against Dusty in a pre-season game to see what he could do. Naturally all the media talked about at the time was the 1 goal Martin kicked where he outpointed Judd (the only goal Dusty kicked for the day in a 50 point loss!).

    One of the smoothest operators in the draft pool, Judd McVee is the kind of player you want rebounding the ball out of defence. He handles the ball cleanly and is efficient in his use by foot, showcasing class to manoeuvre out of tight spots and keep cool in a crisis. With greater consistency and enhanced midfield craft, McVee has the tools to become a tidy player at the top level.

    The 18-year-old was impressive with plenty of midfield time during his state's Under 16 National Championships campaign in 2019, but has since found a more permanent home across half-back where his pure class comes to the fore. He averaged 14.8 disposals across 12 Colts games this season and even cracked the Reserves grade, before also representing WA in the improvised Under 19 carnival

    I will also say Salem never had the tank for that role, and yet people sing out for Kossie to play there and yet he's slight and does not have the ability to play there yet McVee has played there we need a good outside runner, I will also say we have a ruckman as a forward coach how's that going teaching forward craft.

    I agree there is potential to play midfield and that's why I said we can revisit after a few pre-seasons. Big difference between AFL hardened bodies and WA Colts. 

    At this stage of the year let's just be thankful he's doing what he's doing in the backline!

    Here are the top 20 players with 15+ defensive 1v1 contests. McVee is ranked 9th, Quaynor 6th. Melbourne rank second at 19.6% and the league average  is 24.9%.

    the team have been at pains to say we base our game plan on contest and defence

    i think one of the things that they don't say is that we also base it on good decision makers in the back half and pressure in the front half

    the likes of the three talls plus salem, mcvee, rivers, bowey mean that we have 'smart' players behind the ball to set up the play as we bring it forward and then the two talls and the three smalls to bring it to ground and keep it there in the f50

    I’m still not convinced he has a real name, sounds like a cover for something but boy has he been good this season.

    The composure that he, Bowey and Salem bring is excellent.

That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

    • NON-MFC: Round 07

      Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans.Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

      For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

    • CASEY: UWS Giants

      The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
