The reason we were investigated was because Anderson was in charge while Demetriou was overseas. Notice Anderson didn't last too much longer after that. The AFL knows clubs tanked but don't want to admit it hence the investigations into Carlton went nowhere despite Libbas admissions (which he subsequently recanted - gee wonder why?)

If this was the case why does the club continue to use him as our defence lawyer?

Because he wrote some of the tribunal rules?

Brendan Favola also admitted that Carlton tanked. Nothing done.

I can also remember a story about Eddie McGuire saying on the footy show that the pies would be cheering for a loss when they got the priority pick for Daisy Thomas. I have never been able to verify that story though.

I actually heard a story that the AFL increased our grant by $500k for us to pay them back. Unable to verify the story but my source was very bullish with their comments.

I heard something similar.

Do you think he is tanking his appearances for us?

He seems to have lost nearly appearance for the Dees at the Tribunal.

He is NOT our ally/friend. And he's fn useless.

Whoever is engaging him needs their head read.

Hasn't done us any favours in the past, don't understand why the club wouldn't know his history against us.

Absolutely baffling the club would continue with his services that are 💩🏠.

Unnecessary black mark on our history and made no sense right from the start. The misinformation this has spread throughout the league and opposition fans who like to remind you that ‘we got done for tanking’ is ridiculous. Not guilty of tanking but fined $500K, give me a spell.

Given the AFL stuck their head in the sand over the Hawthorn racism accusations, there is a bazillion x zero chance they will get involved in another tanking drama. Their core business is to promote the game at all costs, regardless of right or wrong

Are you suggesting that we didn't tank? Give me a spell.

Paraphrasing extordinaire Old55 is in the house! Good to have you on the show.

To hell with that. We were fined 500k by the AFL. If they do nothing on this latest fiasco, they should give us that money back

We all know that money goes around in a circular direction. They may have 'fined' us, but they basically gave it back to us later in an annual distribution (which isn't the same for all clubs). It was all for theatre (i.e. to appear they were doing something).

didn't they fine us $500k and the next week give us close to $2m so that we could pay out coaching staff, hire pj, hire roos?

That's right, the masters of the theatrical 'deal'.

Would be lucky to get a better deal at Eastside Mitsubishi.

what are you talking about, old55? 😗there is no and has never been any tanking in the afl. Demetriou and mclachlan have made this clear on many occasions.

No more than Eagles, Hawks & Roos over the past couple of years, wouldn’t be surprised if Hawks received a rocket this year came good all of a sudden.!!!

Going back over old ground but the idea that tanking is bad is ridiculous in itself. The club would've been derelict in their duties not trying to do everything in their power to get the 1 and 2 picks in 2009 especially after being out-tanked by the Blues in 2007.

Absolutely Laughable at what West Coast are currently doing?

Pretty sure Tony Liberatore admitted to Carlton tanking in an interview too - was never investigated. We were an easy target. He was an assistant coach at the time

Libba on Open Mike: Liberatore said "he was interviewed by the AFL’s Rod Austin but learned through the newspapers the league would not follow up the tanking claims."

Rod Austin - ex Carlton player!!! You can't make up this stuff. Stinks. oh and an ex-Carlton player was Chief Commissioner of the AFL - Fitzpatrick!!

The thing that leaves a bad taste is that it was an 'almost' conviction. Not guilty of tanking related charges but Bailey and Connolly guilty of acting in a prejudicial manner to the interests of the competition. No loss of future draft picks which would have sent a strong message but a nicely wrapped fine which was subsequently given back to us.

I don't doubt that we tanked and I'm not arguing that we didn't, but there's a photo of us in the dictionary under the definition of tanking when so many teams did it. They were just looked after.

As we get closer to the Finals hopefully this could become more and more relevant. I think we could issue a few smarten up SMS's

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
