A couple of weeks ago a Pies supporter told me Goodwin is not a great coach, almost saying he was lucky to have a flag and overrated.

I actually tried to defend Goodwin's coaching and told him about how good his defensive structures are and how the players believed in him, almost like a father figure.

I am now starting to believe that what my Pies colleague said is true, Goodwin is overrated. I started to go through all the seasons we have been under his wing, lots of wasted seasons and missed opportunities (see 2017 and 2020).

I still believe we have a top 5 list, is the coach good enough for this list?

Where would you place Goodwin among all the current AFL coaches? Top 6? Not even top 8?

Yep. 2 losses on the trot and the coach is suddenly hopeless. Smart.

Classic post loss thread

Reckon there’s a very very long thread on here already called something like ‘is Goodwin the right guy?’

It's not about these 2 losses.

That's why I made my point about his whole tenure. Go ahead and check seasons 2017 - 2023 and rate each one, how many would you consider successful?

This year is starting to feel like the second half of last year.

I still think he's good coach but I'm not sure he's he's a great match day coach.  He seems to struggle to make changes during the game when things are going wrong

Goody was effectively the coach in 16 as well as 17 and he took a side that managed 7 wins by parking the bus in 2015 and won 10 and 12 games. Was disappointing to miss finals in 17 but both seasons were huge successes.

2018 was a 10 out of 10 job.

2019 was a disaster. But look at Adam Simpson at West Coast, some times your injuries just stuff you.

2020, a disappointment for sure. But we established a defensive system and played some young guys who were destined for greatness.

2022, I don’t blame the coaching. They tried to address faults without robbing strengths. Injuries to key players stuffed us. Honestly it wasn’t a bad premiership defence job compared to a lot of sides.

This year, I’m reluctant to say the coaching is the issue. We had a very poor list management off season losing a valuable young player and only adding 2 stop gap solutions. We lost 3 more best 26 players in Weid, Bedford and Hunt for nothing substantial either. Didn’t draft any mature talent.

Some of that is on the coach. Some of that was probably by design banking picks for this year. But the reality is we’re really thin for talent in certain areas and it’s making it hard to keep up with quicker more skilful sides.

When a team is in a slump it's not bright to knife the coach. An alternative view is that he's got the best out of team that has rather too many dour players. Our bottom half is not crash hot. And a few of our top shelf players are short of their best. So...you get losses.

Absolutely cabbage of a coach. Outcoached every match and not getting enough of the talent at his disposal

That's right. With our glittering array of talent on the forward line why aren't we winning every week? Seriously...the exaggeration of our list's talent is bewildering. Clear deficiencies, esp in skill, athleticism and speed.

Well, I agree with the Pie.

Goodwin is more evolution, not revolution.

Do you back in the coach or back in the players? Both need to change their attitude and endeavour pronto.

Good relationship / people management coach -  which is important these days. However, tactically ridged -  been beaten the same way for 12 months and doesn’t change anything -  makes no In-game adjustments -  just sets team at the start and plays games no matter the circumstances.

Can’t remember a time where we’ve set a creative or radical gameplan for an opposition or won a game from the coaches box -  I’d hate to think how good we could be with Sam Mitchell in charge.

Precisely.

Funny how you rate the list a top 5 and we are sitting 4th atm... only halfway through the season.

Our form does worry me we haven't played our best since Sydney game but if we get going after the bye and no more injuries to key players we can go all the way..

😄 I Think, apart from being our first premiership coach in over 50 years, he was a bees' penis away from holding the longest consecutive run in the top four.

We need a change to the assistant coaches at the end of the season. Bring in some fresh ideas. The midfield and forwardline especially is not working.

Goodwin is a good off field coach. Players love him and culturally he’s done so much for the team. But we need to freshen things up in the box.

Agree with the assistant coaches but I believe there is NOW something lacking with Goodwin. I just don't think he can get the players up enough. With our list we should behaving a long hard think at years end. Today was it for the MFC in 2023.

That's harsh.  He delivered a premiership

It's possible.  Fremantle, Bulldogs and Port Adelaide have turned their seasons around.  Can we turn it around and win it? I doubt it

Goodwin has no ideas on how to coach this team. It is another wasted season. Absolutely furious that we lost todays match.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
