The competition is always tough - I am starting to think we have peaked and while still in the window are most definitely on the way down. 

May and Gawn are a shadow of themselves and while I cannot imagine it, the end of their careers is at most 1-2 seasons a way. Also, Based on performances this year against similar quality teams, Trac and Oliver can really no longer lay claim as the best 1,2 combo in the AFL either. 

I may be proven wrong and boy I hope I  bloody am but If the potential is still their and the desire still burns hot then they can show everybody by going 4-0 in the next month. I doubt they can, but to me that’s what it’s going to take to change my mind.

We're in the top 4 for most attacking and defensive stats. Yet, we have a lot of room for improvement.

Given it's May, there should be some room for optimism. But you've already planted your anti-Goodwin flag, so that'll be harder to see past.

I wish I could be as positive as you are about our team AF. All I’ve seen this year is us whipping the easy beats and getting beaten by top sides. I see us getting creamed at the clearances, predominately poor disposal skills, a forward line that gets comfortably beaten by the better sides, and a backline being worked out by opposition coaches of the better sides. I’m as optimistic as the next guy, but not seeing much to reinforce that optimism. And I have to ask - is it the quality of our players that is lacking, or is it the game plan, coaching or game day coaching that is causing us these issues? It has to be one or the other doesn’t it?

The Trac-Oliver conondrum, at least to me, is that I wish they were one player combined. Trac has the power and class, while Oliver has the consistency and toughness/mongrel. 

They need to find the right balance to be a damaging duo. 

If by some magic we could mix both in one player, that player would be considered one of the GOATs.

Interesting that all of our losses have come on the road after being such a good travelling team recently. May be the opposition rather than where we played, or perhaps it's just that we aren't good enough to beat top 8 teams at their home grounds (other than Essendon who just smashed us).

I think our performance has been covered enough in this thread, but I will say it’s great to see May find some form again. I thought he was the only one who stood up for 4 quarters last night. 
 

Worrying signs, but we have a run of games ahead against quality sides to prove me wrong.

It gets forgotten about once the final score is released. The fact that we were belted in nearly every metric we pride ourselves on and Port missing 60 set shots doesn't matter because hey we fought back and got within a kick. It's all sweet bro, galant effort!

This game and the Brisbane game were maulings at the coalface. Contested ball, our 1-wood as the coach likes to say. These close results shouldn't be band aids over problems that are actually quite obvious.

Don’t forget the Bombers and Suns as well. We were lucky to get 4 pts against the Suns.

There is a recency bias about the H&A season and winning the premiership. The last 2 premiers finished top and won. The premiers in the preceding seven years weren't the top team after H&A. (Of course, Top 4 is vital with only the Bulldogs in 2016 and the Crows in 1998)

We need to be in the best shape and in the top 4 come September. That's all that counts.

Last night was deja vu for me. Was watching on AFL our game against Port in 2018 on a wet night in Adelaide. A real tough game like last night and we got murdered by maggots in the last quarter to make sure Port got up for a narrow victory. Uncanny the similarity.

I put my rose coloured glasses back on and realised we only lost by 4 points to an inform PA side on their home deck with the umpires on their side and we only really played well for one quarter.  Premiership anyone? That’s just so much better.

The reason why this happens is Oliver doesn’t hurt you with scores, it’s his biggest flaw. If he got 20-30 goals a year, he would end up being a hall of famer. No body questions his inside game.

I’m not disagreeing with you - he’s a gun abd will win a Brownlow. But snags register in the viewers mind 10x more than i50 or clearance and that’s why he doesn’t get the accolades that he should.

When we are inaccurate, it’s because we suck. 

When our opponent is inaccurate, they’re unlucky. 

FWIW, most of their misses were from 45m+ out. In the wet, those were hard kicks. They weren’t getting easy shots, despite dominating time in forward half. Our defensive system held up for much of the game under high pressure.

You’re as optimistic as the next guy but can only see the negatives? Not sure that’s how optimism works…
