Perhaps, though he was our 3rd highest for clearances behing trac and Oliver as our other mids weren't getting it done. Was a huge part of our momentum in the 3rd in my view. Got smashed all night and still provided a better target for us down the flank and wings than our other talls. He's not going to clunk contested marks in these conditions. Most of our players were poor tonight to be honest, perhaps an argument could be made for Hunter to be in there.

And finished with 22 disposals, 1 goal 2 and our second most clearances. Probably the main driver of our comeback in the third and the only one that looked like he could carry the team to victory.

I'll concede Gawn didn't play a great game. I just fail to see who played any better.

Most of our team was rubbish tonight, I don't know why I'm bothering arguing semantics about who was slightly less poor than the others.

6 May - kept us in the game during that dreadful first half.

5 Petracca - based on the second half only.

4 Oliver - also lifted his game after halftime.

3 Fritsch - at least he can kick straight.

2 Grundy - was better than Max on the night.

1 Rivers, but hard to choose on a poor night for many.

None of the mids tonight.  They were completely outplayed.

It's not that simple unfortunately. One or two mids can have good game and the whole midfield thrashed. Oliver, Viney and Petracca at least got us back in the third quarter. Supporting your argument May and Fritta were the only ones to really win their positions.

Melb's problem is the depth of it's midfield compared to the good sides. Butters, Drew, Rozee, Boak, Horne Francis, Wines, etc are better than us. Collingwood has even better depth.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
