Hard to think of a top level sport  that is as badly adjudicated, on and off the field, as AFL football.

If we don’t appeal this, it will be the first time in many many years that I will be deeply disappointed with the club. We haven’t put a foot wrong IMO in a long time. I was very happy to accept the Kosi penalty, but if we don’t defend a kid who plays the game with good intent and bravery, I would be incredibly upset.
JVR deserves better and if we accept this suspension we are telling him 6 games in, that he has to spend the rest of his career second guessing if he should attack the contest or not.
I would hate to lose that side of his game because it is a big part of what makes him so special.

I'm confident we'll do the right thing. I'm starting to get pretty irritated by the discipline being handed out to players doing the right thing and playing the game in a spirit that we love. The Chandler incident against West Coast last year was a real shame and was unfair to make an example out of him in that moment.

It's a hard game to play as it is, let's not keep throwing brain candy at these guys.

Jaded, fully agree with this. I was fully comfortable with the two weeks for Kossie but to accept the JVR suspension would mean not backing in our players to play the game in the right way. If we appeal and lose I'd expect the club to issue a statement that we will continue to encourage our players to contest the ball. This approach is consistent with Goody stating the bump is dead in reference to the Kossie bump, where in this case were stating the contest is not dead and if the Tribunal intends to suspend players for this then we will back in our players.

Yep   re Chandler suspension. Hawkins did an almost identical tackle in the same round. No report no citing by MRO,.... nothing to see here   play on. I wouldnt be surprised if the broken TV  commentators applauded his powerful tackle.

AFL is run by amateurs. This Dillon bloke better be good.   Gill McLacklan set the AFL back years to the point where a non entity like NRL have caught up by default.

How long have we got to wait before we announce an appeal?

I assume we are trying to put a case together first. That will take a little bit of time.
I have no idea when the cut off is to accept or challenge but I suspect it’s today as the tribunal will likely sit tomorrow or Wednesday.

Dermott Brereton in support of JVR on SEN. Reckons it was genuine spoiling attempt. accidental contact. Says the decision must be changed, otherwise it has the ability to drastically change the game. Reckons Christian is being directed by higher powers to suspend players based on outcomes, to satisfy improved optics amongst fans (and lawyers - although that was what I inferred, not directly stated).

Except the outcome wasn't even a problem here, as Ballard suffered neither a neck injury nor a concussion in the end.

We are now punishing players because a doctor made a call to get a stretcher on the ground out of an abundance of caution?

It might have been said earlier on in the thread and i didn't come across it, if we don't challenge this we will come across as a weak as water football club.

How can Carlton [censored] Football Club challenge the unchallengeable with Cripps last year and get off and MFC just continue to just be bent over a barrel with no lube and take whats coming to them.

Show some back bone MFC and lawyer up we have the financial resources now so we don't bend on this one like others before.

We got 15 minutes to grow a set and lawyer up.

Big clubs challenge this will show me if our powerbrokers think and know we are a big Football club now.

Perceptions are everything in the AFL.

We're appealing

JVR spoiled from front on,why did Ballard grab the back of his head as if hit there or was that from the previous knock he got

Sam Edmund confirming that we will contests!

Thanks MFC!  That is the first critical step.  The next is for the Tribunal to exercise some common sense and clear JVR.  The alternative will (van) ruin our great game, which has withstood the test of time.

Why are we surprised by Christian being a [censored]? He hates us and always has, look at Hogan and Lewis getting three weeks in 2017 against Carlton when Carlton lied about Cripps' broken jaw. Hope this is the shortest tribunal case of all time.

Thanks WWS.  Maybe this pdf should be permanently pinned somewhere on Demonland.

The last line in the article from the website regarding the appeal is good... I assume GC will send in a medical report to back this up

"The club has reached out to the Gold Coast Suns, and pleasingly Ballard has recovered well and is expected to play this week."

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
