Couldn’t find the best place to plant this but given this is the main thread in the lead up to game day though I’d share.

Hoiney (spelling?) from CD tonight on SEN mentioned our #1 PF scoring is a bit misleading on the quality of our footy. Good kicking is good footy I know, but I think the message is that we aren’t flying as the top 2 position might represent and that we come back a little on the ladder if we were afl avg in set shot accuracy.

Similarly the Pies are abysmal  in the turnover scoring game. They didn’t really talk about our downside atm  but given there was nothing glaring is a good sign that we are just not in the best form - which you don’t want to be I. April / May.

A real fake news item really. We have won by 50 50odd 62 and 90.  And our accuracy has been a large part of those results. What it does say is when we play well out footy is in good shape as we are getting the ball to the front of goals plus getting goals on the run from close in.

Tigers Was a 50/50 potential result but instead of kicking the game away like them we again kicked well and the 3 goal margin reflected that again.

I am sure many Dees fans can recall over the 50 years especially when we had poor teams we would play like the Tigers well and bravely but we were our worst enemy with conversion and eventually good teams would overrun us with pressure and extra class. Now it's our turn to repay those results and reflect our skill and new found accuracy. Long May it last.

They are not looking for Pies downsides just marvelling at their skill etc in close finishes even without more shots as the Crows kicked away the game on Sunday.

Have you heard about the circle of parity? You can run through all 18 clubs by saying "A beat B, but B beat C, but C beat D" and so on until you get back to where you started.

I noticed someone calling himself @binman messaged in to ask Hoiney about team fitness statistics - there couldn't be two binman's who follow AFL could there?

Just while i'm talking i do think that another Club other than GC might be up and about a bit more this year and could end up vying for seven and eight along with TWSNBN and now Sydney and that CLUB is GWS.

If they knock off the Dogs this week they they’d have to be in finals calulations.

I’m heading down the M1 for the game, I’m also taking my 7 year old to his first AFL game, I certainly hope we’re switch on at the first bounce, the game at the Gabba wasn’t a great outing for Demons supporters (especially those that cracked the [censored] and left when the lights went out……)

We’ve played 7 danger games this year, winning 5 losing 2!

Tigers came out hot against the Demons and had an extra four players umpiring for them! Looked ordinary in comparison last week, kicked badly for goal, Demons would have handled comfortably in that form.

Miller out hurts GC, Demons should control midfield and be too strong for GC but won’t be easy!

We also use the space at the G really well and won't have this ability playing away.

It’s bad management to drop Schache after one game

I’d bring in Spargo for Jordan

Petty for Hibberd

Two narrow and almost on final siren wins over Hawks and a depleted Swans is a good reward for GWS.

But it does not alter the fact that it's list is still in the very much " work in progress" mode. Especially without Sam Taylor on the injured list for a large part of the season.

It's team as usual has its stars but most are not at the standard of 2019 except Toby Greene and now Coniglio has returned to near his best. Whitfield ( injury) Kelly ( form) Haynes ( form) are shadows of their previous best IMO. Himmelberg is good but spasmodic and Flynn promising a bright career in the future.

They have holes in each line and on ball is very up and down with the other Greene possibly the most reliable each week.

Admittedly Jesse Hogan has strengthened the forward line and Bedford may replace Hill in time.

They have a chance vs Dogs but won't want to be four goals down again and expect to win. They are not the Pies. And they probably won't kick 17.5 again and Tony may not be BOG to give them a chance with his super talent up against a better back line than the depleted Swans.

Goody was non-committal about the team make-up this weekend in today's presser. Unfortunately Luke Dunstan has an MCL and will out for 4-6 weeks:

Without reading Goodwin's mind, it sounds like Schache will be dropped and will play for Casey.

Petty a direct replacement for Schache I'm assuming.

He was confident that Spargo will be selected.

He mentioned that tough calls will be made for this weekend, which will no doubt mean Jordon will get the wrong end of the stick despite being a perfectly capable AFL player.

I have this gut feeling that the strategy of banging it long to King (impressive as he is) or Mr Loquacious isn't going to hold up against us. Their only true crumber is Ainsworth, who is fine but he's not Pickett or Chandler and I'd pick Nibbler ahead of him, too. A couple of their midfielders occasionally pop up for a couple of goals, but the overall scoring power is very weak.

As I see it, there are just four players we need to put special attention to and we'd reduce the Suns to running in mud. King, Anderson, Witts, and Lukosius. The rest deserve normal AFL respect but these four are the key to the Suns being dangerous.

Well, you are actually attempting to read Goodwin's mind because he didn't give any indication any of this will be happening. I'm not saying your predictions are going to proved incorrect. Time will tell.

He was pretty effusive that Spargo's back in.

He sounded like he was being kind to Josh Schache in terms of his performance last week and that the fact that he said he'll play at either Casey of MFC, suggests to me that he won't be in the senior side.

I must have heard it differently to you, but I'm confident of those 2 selections.

Yes, that really seems like a fair assessment. Wellsy: Do you notice the primary similarities between the Honourable Greg Wells (No.11) and the up and coming fast learner - Chandler?

I think Schache's performance has gotten off lightly in most appraisals on here and have no doubt he would be back at Casey.

My understanding of that goalkicking thing is we are 11% above expected. If you subtract that from our scores our win/loss record remains the same.

That said - all that matters during the season is winning 16 games and beating the other contenders. We are 0/1 in the latter. Looking forward to the Collingwood and Geelong games to see where we're at.

You are right Loges - he certainly wasn't a match winner.

However, he competed and put himself in the right spots. I would like him to get a follow up week just to make a better judgement of whether or not he can be a useful ( or better) contributor.

Will be interesting to see who goes out for Salem when he comes back in, probably around the Collingwood game.....(all things going well with his recovery).

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
