old55 23,861 Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Part time umpiring is a problem but I can understand why the umpiring community is unenthusiastic about going full time. How much are they going to get paid? Likely not as much as the lowest regular list players. That means - umpire full time for 5 to 15 years on even $150-200k/year, then what for the next 30 to 40 years? Non umpires will have established a career while they're umpiring and they also won't have the benefit of post-playing job opportunities that players have through club supporters. 2 Quote

The competition is very close. Gold Coast beat Geelong. Hawthorn should have beaten Adelaide, who are currently top 6. Richmond drew with Carlton (are they are a finals team, probably). And as the year goes on, similar results will happen. Any win is a good win. Especially in this competition. So see the positives, not the negatives. The negatives will be addressed come finals time. This Melbourne side is as good as any. Feel like most people said the same thing last year and we went out in straight sets, the early season form tells me we don’t have what it takes vs the best and will just be making up the numbers come finals. This could be partly address if we didn’t muck round trying to play a fwd line primarily lead by a rookie, a backman and a ruck. 1 Quote

Would have been interesting. It was ok, Goody was happy we won the way we did. Scott is just trying to implement a game style that’s competitive against the better teams. The thing of interest was that both coaches think a mid-season trade period is on the way. Inevitable they said. 1 Quote

I always felt the day was about the tragedy and horror of war, and that we should avoid them at all cost. Ask any returned soldier who engaged in active duty, very few would say "do it". Most say "what was it all about". Doesn't that war in Afghanistan or Iraq show, no good comes of it, except for causing a failed state, allowing war lords into the vacuum and the associated sanctions harming the common person. The reflection used to be about how war destroys communities and its citizens. The main deaths in war are those trapped in its environs. The armistice was a time we thanked the service people. I am amazed that it has become all about honouring the military and barely a mention of the futility and suffering. It is also the impetus that caused us to mature (Australia and New Zealand). We decided not to allow foreign (British Empire) nations to decide our Troop deployments. The making of an independent Australia. That is why we used to offer ceremony to that defeat in Canakkale (Gallipoli). It is amazing how the narrative gets moved by those with vested interests. Come on @kev martin - seriously . . . how did you stumble upon that notion? Quote

Other than racist, sexist, etc language - I dont tell people what they can and can’t say. That’s for Andy to dictate. Now as for my advice - does it matter? It was a colourful way for me to imply that the comment about a man’s loyalty and commitment says more about you than it does them. I understand many are worried he will leave, I don’t much care for impugning the loyalty of players (which has famously backfired on me 15 years ago) and that has led to this [censored] for tat. Now, we can leave it there if we want… 3 1 Quote

My guess would be 11.30 am after the reviews. Usually less than 1 hours kind of stretch, run and simple drills. Quote

Kev 10,926 Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Wasn't the surface of the MCG superb. At least a week off because of the gather round, and pristine. I remember the 70's. Patchy, muddy and hard on that cricket pitch. Great work MCC. Also no green wooden benches, or that standing area under the Ponsford Stand, behind the goals. Great memories with dad. 4 Quote

Our night game against Richmond is a fantastic spectacle. More so than the afternoon game the following day. That said I've always felt that they are little more than well spun cash cows for the AFL (and maybe the RSL?) and not an appropriate way to reflect on what the day is about. The same goes for the week long ANZAC narrative on steroids throughout the football media landscape that competes to out gush each other. Sometimes less really is more. It's not just the AFL doing this though, ANZAC Day seems to have been co-opted sometime in the mid-90's to be more about a celebration of the military rather than solemn reflection of the horror and futility of war. If anything it should be seen as an advertisement for all the reasons not to join the military rather than the glorification it has sometimes become (eg at today's game I swear I saw fighter jets flying overhead). 4 1 Quote
