With Cameron off the ground, against Nankervis, the Pies still won most of the clearances.

So does this make us feel better about beating the Dogs or worse about losing to the Lions?

Definitely worse about losing to the Lions, particularly as that is two in a row, but they got us at a good time and in a good place for them.

Interesting that most of the tipsters in The Age have stayed with us for this week. Possibly they judge that last week was an aberration for our midfield down to Max's injury, the conditions and that weird thing that sometimes infects all teams of a generalised down game through the entire group.

We are expected to regroup. Given it's Sydney, a win is not guaranteed but a cracking game is.

I've been saying all along that it's easy for a coach to counteract when their ruckman is losing the hit-outs.

The Pies are so damaging because they have 2 qualities which are too often under-rated:

  • They have a lot of natural footballers who understand the game, where the ball is going, where to run to, what to do in close etc... It is much better to impose fitness on natural footballers, than it is to try and upskill athletes. Moore, Pendlebury, De Goey, 2 x Daicos, Elliot etc... The most appealing football is played by natural footballers.
  • I am not sure how kicking efficiency is measured, but their kicking skills look as good as I have seen. Likewise their handballs. It feels like they rarely miss targets.

However, with their manic running in waves through the middle of the ground, I am convinced that they will have significant periods of exhaustion throughout the year, including the finals.

but with Cox and Cameron out and Mcstay having to ruck this will mess with their fwd structure over time. certainly a blow as Cameron was playing very well

Cats ‘managing’ Stanley and Rowan after 2 rounds??

hope it blows up in their face

cmon suns, show some fight!!!

Hawks have some decent ins. expect them to get a win over north after they come back from perth

Saints will run out of luck. Steele out in addition to the other 8-9 blokes is too many. bombers should win

blues will beat giants

get on board Dubs multi!!

When was the last time any side kept up blistering form for 23 weeks?

Even if they stay fit enough to play like this through winter, they have to stay in form whilst sides start targeting them in more depth. We didn’t cope well with that last year.

It’s almost impossible to keep this form up for the whole year and the competition is so even they will lose games. And hopefully they get caught in some loss of form, opposition strategy hole in the finals.

Ok I buy it. I'm feeling something with the Hawks as well, been hammered around all week and aren't that far behind North list wise.

We probably would have beaten the Pies tonight.

Problem is they won't kick 8:15 that often

Probably wouldnt have. Pies match up so well against us. Cox being out would have helped us but still cant see us beating them again this year except Septembet.

If we cut out all the unnecessary distractions in the week leading up to the KB MCG match our chances rise.

Love the sound of F1 cars across the road in the morning.

No I really do, good to see people out and about again.

Gill McLachlan gifted several bottom sides soft draws to start the season. Essendon will stick around a while  .  Norff should go 3-0 against Clarkos old team.Saints are winning with a VFL side but cant last much longer.

Was just about to post the same thing. I think we'll know more after today whether they're tanking or not (i don't think they are btw)

If hawthorn get smashed by nth today then look out.

I just really hope the saints can win tonight. I'm not really coping with Collingwood & Essendon being undefeated

Elliott can play as a FF if required he is a natural lead up forward in the traditional sense, just undersized.

But they play a physically taxing style and will need to sustain it for another 5 months just to get to the finals starting gate.

Spot on.

They are super fit.

I heard an interview yesterday on RSN brekafast with Daicos senior who said the thing that was missed last year when people talked about all their close wins was how brilliant their 'condtioning' was last season

Mcrae has made a point of referencing their condtion and how solid their preseason was mutiple times this year.

Their game plan is actually very similar to ours in the sense that it relies on wave running and creating out numbers thouygh work rate.

And just like ours,  it relies on them being, and remaining, super fit to work.

All credit to them for being so fit - they must have teriifc program in place. And the players are obvipoulsy fully invested. But if they can't mainatin that condtioning they will fall aawy like we did last year.

Three of their key players in Cameron, Howe and Cox are all out with medium term injuries that will impact both their own fitness levels and the teams performnce.

As you say, it's a long season

Really like the way Jai Newcombe goes about it. The Don from Poowong

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
