VOTES: Rd 02 vs Brisbane

The DE stat is often overrated and sometimes underrated.  And often a poor guide.  To be honest, it's a confusing stat especially when looking at the output of Petracca last week.  He was dominant yet his DE percentage indicated otherwise

The eye test is more pertinent and even that's subjective

Brayshaw went at 63% last night and had 27 possessions.  Sure, he was a bit wasteful as Oliver was but many of our players just didn't get enough of the ball and were largely invisible.  That's a much bigger concern

We had at least 12 players who underperformed in terms of actual possessions.  Didn't get near it

And if you go into the custom stats on the AFL app, you can get the turnovers stat.  Unfortunately, Clarry had 12 turnovers, the highest in the game (with Petracca and Rayner next, each with 6 turnovers).

Surprisingly, Lions had 77 turnovers to our 65.  Wonder if that's the impact of after the lights.  Of course, Lions might have had more possessions overall (have not counted yet) or the turnovers might have occurred in less damaging places.

Edit:  also now I think of it, we were being smashed in the midfield so the fact that our midfielder had such a high turnover rate is telling...  Viney had 4, Harmes had 4

Surely the umps get amongst it for the lions with their playings dropping their knees. That front on contact to Gus in the dying embers of the game was as obvious free as it gets. Play on.

The numbers alone can confuse ... my eyes told me that we turned the ball over a lot more than they did and in vital areas of the ground

And the midfelders often don't have much choice but to kick long to position/contests so if the forwards don't compete well enough, turnovers occur

You put a gun forward in our team last night (one who competes and is hungry for every like contest like a Nick Rievoldt type) and then there are a lot less uncontested marks to the opposition

The hang-time alone on a lot of those long kicks in should have meant that our forwards could have at least effected some spoils ... but that didn't happen

Did the Lions have at least 20 uncontested marks in our forward line? Because each time that happens it's a lost scoring opportunity

We had a poor game but we if you don't adhere to the fundamentals, you'll lose

His first job is clearance and stoppage he/we got smashed in these areas. He got a lot of cheap ball and blazed distance. Whilst rare for him, it was close to one of the most low impact 30+ possession games you could see.

I reckon it was the worst game he’s ever played.

6 - Lever

5 - Clarry

4 - Hunter

3 - Grundy

2 - BBB

1 - Gus (came good in 2nd half)

Unfortunately Jake Melksham was exposed to the game early and had no impact we actually had the worst 6 players on the ground. Sadly I haven’t seen our midfield get so smashed in the past two years.

6 - Lever

5 - BBB

4 - Grundy (he has copped a fair but on here, but we would have been humiliated if he wasn't playing)

3 - Oliver

2 - Hunter

1 - Fritsch

Oliver and Hunter really only in the votes because of their last quarter efforts. Oliver was the spark in the last 12 minutes. I recall someone saying earlier in the week that Oliver wasn't a game changer, his efforts when they came back on after the blackout put to bed that argument.

I have never seen Clarry turn the ball over so much every disposal went to the opposition endlessly

But if I’m being honest only Lever gets a true pass mark. He was excellent. The rest need to take this game and set it alight like the lights at the Gabba.
I literally struggled so much to give votes beyond the first 3.

Good to see Hunter in the votes, at least when he gets the ball you know it's going to one of our players

Hopefully the person saying Clarry is not a game changer has been earmarked for a remedial football institution where he can learn what true champions are to a team as Clarry was last night and has been in every game he has played in his outstanding career.

Two of the best examples are Round 23 2021 in our famous comeback at the Cattery and also in the GF from the 3rd quarter on when we made our move in bang bang bang etc. it usually starts on the ball and Clarry is front and centre many a time.

6 Lever - stellar defense efforts

5 Hunter - worked hard, particularly second half

4 Ben Brown - great goal efforts

3 Bowey - great disposals

2 Fritta - not his best but still helped with 3 goals (but if only some of those behinds had converted!)

1 Brayshaw - bit meh but did some good work in second half

Thommo also was solid-ish given his playing profile.

But overall the bottom 2 are just slighr advantages over an uninspiring 18 others

Agree got the bad one out of our system early in the season. Midfielders very poor until last stanza.

At times Fritta may look lackadaisical but at one point last night he never gave up  defending and laid 3 tackles from memory  within seconds in one passage of play-he never gave up putting on the pressure. Credit where credit is due. Does anyone know exactly when this happened-will try to re watch it on  replay. 3rd or 4th quarter.

Yes 3031 I remember it was in the third quarter around the arc area at the Wellington St end. Hats off to Fritta who didn't play his usual classy game but worked in nicely at the end for his 3 goals and had other opportunities. He will be cherry ripe for next week for a big bag vs the Swans

BBB kicked four goals but how many intercept marks did Harris Andrews take? Unfortunately, I think BBB was well beaten.

Given these votes are about top performances for the Dees in the past two games... I think BBB should be recognised for getting 4 goals in each game.  Sure Harris got intercepts but Brown still did something, which is more than we can say for most players about yesterday's game

    GAMEDAY: Rd 12 vs Carlton

The Blues season is on the line and their captain and coach have been in the firing line all week. If the Dees cough this one up the media's crosshairs will do a 180 and will surely be directed at the Demons who have only won 13 games from their last 25 outings. This is a must win game for the Melbourne Football Club too.

We’ve seen it all before.   Club in turmoil. Coach under pressure. Club President caught up in a tax scandal. Club board not seeing eye to eye with one board member resigning amid questions about whether he was pushed or did he jump? Unrest bordering on hysteria among the supporters. Team dropping from undefeated after four rounds to 13th after ten. Allegations of favoured treatment of players. WRITING ON THE WALL by Whispering Jack

The Narrm Football Club found a second way in the space of 12 months less a day to unexpectedly lose a home game against Walyalup on Saturday afternoon. The equivalent match of last year has been described as Melbourne’s “ground zero” of 2022 where things went wrong for the club after a long run of wins that included its 57 year drought-breaking premiership triumph. Unfortunately for the Demons, the 2023 version was a case of deja vu with the Dockers overcoming a half time deficit and runn

    CRUSHED by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons were dealt a crushing blow to their hopes of repeating last year’s premiership glory when they capitulated to the Werribee Tigers in the final term of what was for the first three quarters a riveting game of football. The Demons struck early with the opening two goals of the match but the Tigers fought back to level the scores by mid-term. From there on until the middle of the last quarter, there was never more than two goals separating the teams although the home side look
