A scare went through the Demon's camp at training when Jack Viney went down with a suspected knee injury. He immediately left the track and was taken for scans to assess the damage, if any, to his knee.

On the eve of the 2023 Season Melbourne Football Club General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson allayed every Demon fans worst fears stating that that the scans revealed that "there isn't any significant damage to his knee".

“We will have a better idea of his rehabilitation progress over the next week. While he will miss this weekend’s practice match against Richmond, we don’t anticipate him to be further impacted ahead of the season.”

The club, through it's website, confirms that the 28 year old will be on "light duties" until he is fit to resume full training.

With just 16 days remaining until the Demon's Round 1 encounter with recent rival the Western Bulldogs the clock is certainly ticking and Demon fans will be hoping that Jack will take the field in the season opener.

A number of players are ready to fill the giant sized hole left in the middle in Viney's absence with Tom Sparrow ready to jump into the breach after returning from the break super fit and training the house down over the preseason according to all report from Demonland's trackwatchers. Angus Brayshaw might also need to be pulled from defence duties. James Jordon could be recalled from Casey to replace the injured Vice Captain.

Whilst Viney is very important to us I believe we have cover with the likes of Sparrow, Jordan, Rivers etc. for what I hope is only a short time out, if at all.

Sounds like he copped a knock to the knee. Fingers crossed he only misses a week or two.

Season starts in two weeks tonight.

Lever and Salem already sidelined.

Will miss his defensive presence in the middle of sure but it’s one area where We are covered.

Yes it's not a huge loss

Jack is built for aggressive finals leadership.  If this is the worst  from Pre season and he misses several weeks our list strength can cover him and I'll breathe a giant sigh of relief after the Tiges game if we have a clean bill of health.

Annoying that media gets hold of this before the club even releases anything official.

Maybe they’re waiting for scans before making us all panic?

Anyone who doesn't think Jack is a huge loss is kidding themselves. He is an A grade midfielder and our VC. Not as easy to replace as we think.

Seems like Jack Viney is underrated by a majority. He is a big loss, so hopefully it's not long term.

Gus spent a majority of the match sim off half back, so he could now spend most of his time in the middle. And it could also lock in Judd McVee for round 1, and maybe Rivers gets some midfield time.

I know it leaves a space for other mids, but!

There is not a same for same replacement.

No-one goes as hard as Jack. Who is going to get under the pack? He seems to have set himself for a big year, training hard, setting examples for the young ones. He can turn games in our favour.

I was believing he could be our B&F this year. (Yes, ahead of Tracc, Clarry and Max)

A full preseason interrupted at the last hurdle.

Great it is not foot related.

Would have been the perfect opportunity for Dunstan to replace Viney, as he did for Anzac Eve last year and the North game. However, he's got a hammy and probably won't be cherry ripe for round 1 selection.

We are 8-2 without Viney's services since the start of 2021 including top shelf wins over Sydney, Dogs and Brisbane in 2021 and to a lesser extent Richmond in 2022.

The win-loss suggests we can cover him but we've got an extremely tough first 3 weeks coming up.

What’s the alternative? Club releases info every time a player has a scan?

There’s club staff, other players, player managers, friends and family, the medical clinic, people walking down the street. A lot of potential leaks.

That’s without the potential of the club throwing a leak around to various journos every now and then just to kept them fed.

I’m not too worried about this leaking especially if he’s had a scan and it’s not major.

Was listening to SEN at the time and Wheatley got a private text message from somebody who saw Viney in the street. GW then got Edmund to ring club to confirm. Club may/may not have all the info?? SEN didnt know what the injury was just that JV was bandaged up and limping. Club confirmed knock when questioned.

Staggering that people still underrate Viney.

Intensity, on-field leadership, hardness. 10/10 in all three.

Watch the first bounce of the GF for a reminder

This is a blow, however if it does not have any ongoing issues for him, then I'll take this now, rather than round 22

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
