I don't think it's about being seduced by picks this time mate. It's about maintaining the culture that the club has tried so hard to foster, and maximising what is a dreadfully sorry and sad situation.

Clarry is my favourite player, I'm devastated. But we've got the picks this year to work a deal that could rejuvenate our list.

The other thing not being talked about is the potential dramatic impact not having Clarry in our midfield will have on our game style.

Collingwood have shown you don't need an elite midfield to win a flag. They've bucked the trend in that regard.

I trust JT, Lamb and the broader club to do what's right for the MFC here.

As gut wrenching as that is. I suspect many of us are so strongly bonded to Clarry because we waited so long for an elite midfielder and then we got him, he helped us win a flag and now here we are...

He’s a product of our culture. He’s been 4x b&f and one year ago signed a massive seven year deal. Was he a problem before all of this??

If he’s lost his way that’s the on our ‘great culture’ to correct. This is where it matters, it’s where the coaches matter. Where captains lead (Max is rumoured to be doing so).

Make no mistake, this is a huge moment. You can’t name a single other player and club where this happens. Maybe G.Ablett Jr, but that was a very different set of circumstances. Dusty is a much better example, what happened there? What will happen here?

All i can say is this Harley Reid must be one hell of a player if we are contemplating trading Clarry.

I believe the Dees are certainly after Reid.

However, I do think there is more to it in trading Clarry. It will free up salary cap space to chase another one or two key players. I think the Dees have more in store this trade period.

I don't think we would EVER contemplate trading Clarry for any player, unless the situation becomes untenable.

I hope we are not there yet, and I have no doubt that the club still believes that a happy, healthy and focused Clarry is still the best possible outcome for us.

Reid or no Reid.

This.

I suspect we wouldn't even be able to get Reid if we did trade Clarry. Roos pick 2 and 3 or hawks pick 3 and future first have better cards.

I think we are still in the hunt for it.  Give GC pick 13 and next years 1st for GC’s pick 4 and then trade pick 4 and 5 for 1 or even 2 at Nth as I still believe WC are a chance to take Curtin at 1

Or any pick #1. Clubs dream of recruiting a player like Clarry via draft or trade.

If we got pick #1 we'd be looking for the next Clayton Oliver, may as well keep the original.

Now saying the lure back to SA for Petty is big, maybe not yet but the lure home is real for him.

Nonsense.   What is this lure?  He comes from a tiny rural town that barely makes it onto the map.

Why move to Adelaide and play for who? Crows are along way from Premiership window and Port are a bigger finals flop than us.

A fit Petty will see us play finals over the next two years and hopefully another flag.

Looks like Oliver is staying.

Was just saying what he tweeted. Didn’t say I agreed just putting it there for those who didn’t see it.

Assuming Oliver stays the process has been interesting in looking at how clubs value draft picks over proven players.

No matter how you look at it Oliver is in the top fifteen of present players and at 26 has another say 7 years to give.

The fact that presumably neither Eagles or North were willing to float picks 1 or 2 plus a sweetener intrigues me.

The same happened last year with Jackson where we got 2 pick 13's (by a fluke the future 13 morphed into 5) for a pick 3 proven key position player.

To the uninitiated the market seems skewed and if that be the market compensatory draft picks, Academy and father-son picks are incredibly valuable

Wut?

I genuinely don't understand what the 'this' could possibly be that makes it something that doesn't happen at any other club.

A player having a slip in professional standards due to unhappy changes in their personal life and/or their first major injury recovery process?

A club mobilising their support resources and leadership to get them back in line?

Speculation that a player & club in such a situation might be open to a trade on the principle of a fresh start?

It's interesting to compare American sports to ours. They are generally very focused on the here and now, rather than future outcomes. A lot I think comes back to the owners needing financial returns as opposed to long term team success.

Most of the sports are also dominated by the "big" teams so they can usually afford to buy players as required.

Take baseball for example, small clubs will ahve a small window to win with rookies and a stable core, then their talent will get poached as the players demand big $$$.

I think that also drives the urgency to win now in US sport especially. I also find it hard to love a team when players move all of the time.

But i wouldn't say eihter model (US or Aus AFL) is perfect, while they yanks don't have loyatly like us they do generally have integrity (i can't say i follow super close to know for sure, theer have alwasys been scandals) but i would say the AFL model is tainted as well as the AFL get too involved in outcomes either via the draft, fixturing, FA and trade restrictions and umpiting.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
