Freo gave away their draft picks. No point tanking.ย  Their cupboardย  is bare.ย  I hope Jacko was worth it.

With my tinfoil hat on, maybe they plan to do a deal with MFC.ย  They sink as low as possible and in return we give them something.ย ย  (Yes, joking.)

Absolutely. ย We were able to extract Freo's 2nd rounder for this exact reason. ย They begrudgingly relented to our demand and gave us the pick because all parties believed Freo would be much higher on the ladder and that 2 picks in the teens would not have been a fair price for Jacko.

They bet on improving (or at worst holding steady) and now we're getting better than expected value. A win for us, but how big won't be known for a while yet.

I'm surprised the 2023 2nd Round Pick would have sweetened the deal much. Based on a Top 4 finish for Freo this year it would have been about Pick 35 even before dilution from Academy & Father/Son picks, Free Agency Compensation, North Special Compensation etc. etc.ย ย

As long as Suns smash Roos in last round. Dockers will belt Eagles and lift % and then could beat Hawks.

Freoโ€™s percentage should get worse with games against Geelong in Geelong, Brisbane and Port.ย

Thatโ€™s true. I suppose win over Eagles just has to be less than combined losses to the 3 you named and hopefully lose to Hawks. Then itโ€™s done and with a win by Suns over Roos franking it.

None of us would have seen pick 4 coming, on top of Jefferson pick and improved Freo 2nd rounder.

TBH Jacko has really played no better than in 2022, other than a couple of very good games.

I hope they think the same in 4 years when their salary cap is cooked and they are still a middle of the pack team with no aspirations. ๐Ÿ˜

If Ben McKay leaves North, would they not get pick 3 as free agency compo? The pick after their pick 2.

It's no different to us receiving pick 3 for Frawley in 2014.

Ultimately it comes down to contract price, length and some unknown formula the afl uses that factors in age and god knows what else. Since those are secret, they can disguise draft assistance with a first round compensation pick quite easily.

I will say that Frawley had played nearly twice the amount of games and earned himself an AA jacket. McKay is not the same quality and hard to see a team spending upwards of 800k per year on him.

agree. ben mckay is not worth a 1st round pick. The very best would be an end of 1st round pick and even that is doubtful.

his value is not based on his skill or form but more that he fills a niche that not many do, plus a lot of wishful thinking re his "potential".

Of course norf would want a 1st round pick, but i'm surprised how many media pundits are claiming or pushing for it. makes for good click-bait i suppose or maybe the afl have been doing some whispering to their acolytes in the media.

given the afl "magic ingredients" formulae in such trades anything outrageous is possible. But instead of looking for some sneaky way to give norf a compensation pick, just outright give them a compensation pick, but not pick 3 as there is already too much draft distortion at the top end with rfas, academy and father/son guarantees.

Agreed with all that, but this could be the AFL's opportunity to help North out in a major way.

Hope I'm wrong.

Absolutely it could.ย

Also discussion around North getting the ability to pre-list Sanders and Callinan.

I think it will be one or the other.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmyโ€™s inclusive bannerโ€”"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwoodโ€™s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.ย

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
