Richmond were alright tonight. I think they should win enough games to finish ahead of the Dockers this year.

That's gold.

Opens up a whole new bunch of games to have an interst in - any game of a team just above them on the ladder.

Yes, we should be Tigers, GC and GWS fans from here on out.

Easy.

Quite like all three teams - particularly the suns and giants.

Freo are a basket case.

6.40 onwards:

Lobb said in February that the coaching staff at Freo were pointing him in the wrong direction (not great to say publicly), but given the above clip and the fact they were only 18 points down when that happened, that they are desperate for a win, I’d love to know what the coaching staff told the players in the lead up, as they were clearly fixated on Lobb.

(not saying the coaches told the players to go after Lobb)

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the fish bowl of WA mentality, which had Lobb being a traitor in the papers all week.

I stand corrected. I remember now. There was no negativity towards Jeremy Howe from Melbourne supporters before 5/8/22. Just 6.5 years of niceness 😀. Actually we should forgive Howe for purely selfish reasons. He played 100 games for Melbourne if my maths is correct and his son could qualify under current Father/Son rules for either Melbourne or Collingwood.

Fair point. I like to think I'm a reasonably civilised person but I'm definitely not at my best at a Melbourne game. It's laughable. Every game I tell myself that I'm going to behave as I arrive at the MCG and that usually stands till the first arguable umpring decision.

Wasn't Howe essentially playing half-forward flank for us? Certainly a much-improved player once he went to Collingwood. Frawley was 26 when he left at the end of 2014 and he might have made the difference between us making the Finals or not in 2017.

I think you're re-writing history re 2018. Everyone seems to downplay Melbourne's performances due to the horrific Prelim exit. One bad game and that unfortunately was the final one. A bit like last year. A 14-8 record in 2018, and should have been 16-6 or 17-5, percentage of 130%+. Lost 2 Geelong games by under a kick that we shouldn't have. Lost to St Kilda (16th at the time) by 2 points. Our smallest winning margin was 13 points... Basically, we should have finished 2nd, not 5th, and then who knows what could have happened?

Howe has had multiple pings at Melbourne since leaving and I hope he never wins a flag.

Yes, exactly. It's why, had Sheed not kicked that winning goal in the GF and Collingwood hung on to win, it would have been up there with the Bulldogs 2016 Premiership as a team nowhere near the top couple winning the flag.

Richmond and Melbourne were clearly the top two in 2018. Hawthorn only the made the top 4 after the H&A season by virtue of the easiest fixture in AFL history - everyone knew they'd be out in straight sets. WCE were flat track bullies and didn't win too many away that mattered except the GF.

Melbourne shot itself in the foot in so many of the close losses with ridiculous inaccurate kicking. The Sydney loss near season's end said it all.

Like you said, if they finished where they should have, it would have been a very different end to the season and no Perth trip.

He’s not as highly touted as JVR was in his draft year but has really stepped up from last year to this year and is making up ground at a good rate. The youngest brother who is 15 this year I think is probably the most talented of the 3

Have been on this level since around Rd 2.

It's given me whole new respect for the other teams at the base of the ladder.

On a serious note, it's a great mechanism against tanking when the teams that occupy those positions don't have any incentive to finish lower.  Just a pity that Hawthorn didn't trade it's first rounder.  Similarly, it would be a good time for the league to put them on notice Re tanking to give them some motivation to finish somewhere 15 - 13 where they should really be.

Besides, it would be so 'un-Hawthorn -like" to get a wooden spoon.

Amen!

The irony no one eluded too in his departure was that we DID want him to be part of our defence and FUNNILY enough that’s WHY he left — Buckley promised to play him as FWD. fact (documented) then after 2-3wks as a fwd, they said NOPE, Soz — you’re a Defender and that was that. So Roosy saved his career really as without those weeks as a DEF at Dees, who knows how he’d of gone at the Pies as a fwd, might’ve been toast after 2hrs 😂

Both Sam and Jacob are currently listed at 193cm. (Sam 85kg, Jacob 96kg)
Both are young boys so still have some growth to come.

JVR listed at 193 should be 2 or 3 cm shorter than Lever and Petty.  I saw him coming up the race next to Lever and standing next to Petty. Instead he looked 2 or 3 cm taller.  Maybe he has grown.

Just curious really but will claim that it is compromising my football betting so that I may spit the dummy.

Like the Diacos boys... I guess he had to compete with his older brothers when growing up, makes a big difference.

I think that's a bit of revisionist history there - we got a bit of a run on but had struggled to beat most of the top 8 sides during the season (although had a number of close losses such as Geelong x2).  We beat West Coast but only when our finals were on the line and it was already sewn up for them.  Even our finals match against Hawthorn after starting strongly they stiffled our movement until well into the last quarter.  We had a great season and on our day could mix it with most... but our key defenders were Frost and O Mac!  We overperformed to get to the final 4.

I think JVR is listed 193, Lever 194 and Petty 197.  Obviously it's going to be hard to spot a cm difference from a bit of distance.  Interestingly Lever and Petty are both listed as 94kg while JVR is listed as 96kg.  He's a big lad!

The 1JVR 93cm measurement is old. I read he was 195cm now and about 96kg. He certainly plays taller than his height suggests with his leap and strength in the contest, similar to Charlie Curnow who is only 192cm.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
