How are those long term contracts to Brayshaw, Chandler, Gawn, Grundy, May and Spargo looking at this point?

And clearly all of Brown, McDonald and Tomlinson should have been on one year deals at this point of their careers.

For all the talk of us being a destination club, we are still having to cough up in a big way to retain players.

I'll be very disappointed if we don't have 6 list spots to take to the draft / trade period at year end, plus a couple of rookie selections.

Woewodin the last to re-sign.

With 4 picks in the top 40 we will absolutely try to consolidate and get up the order in November.

Only 3 picks in the top 40, Disco to be elevated at the end of season. We will only have 3 spots total at end of year by my reckoning with one to go on young Brown. Only way we can get more places on the list is if Harmes or McDonald decide to go elsewhere. Dunstan, Hibbert and Melksham not re-signed, JJ to go elsewhere for game time.

Looking across the list and end of year possible changes:

Retirement - Hibberd, Melksham (?) . Both are still playing good footy but may not be best 22 at start of 2024. Melksham will be 32 and Hibberd 34. Tough decisions to make if they want to play on.

Looking for more opportunities elsewhere- Tomlinson, Dunstan, Laurie, Harmes. I thought Dunstan might come in with Oliver out but also got injured and only now back to full fitness.  Laurie is close but can’t break in. I think he’ll look to try his chances perhaps at club like Hawks, Swans or Giants.  Tomlinson would be deserving of a full season elsewhere but is a backup for us right now.  Shame to say Harmesy ❤️ move but his disposal and decisions are getting worse and you need to be sharp in todays game.

Physically struggling to play on - Tmcd, BBB. Both have looked cooked during games and may be look at pay outs if they cannot continue

Developing still - AMD, Deakyn Smith.  I think they are nearly there and I’d keep them both on rookie list for 2024.

Some interesting list management decisions coming up.

We currently have 36 listed senior players and 6 "A" rookies.

We can have any combination of 37 and 5 or 38 and 4.

Not sure if there is a difference between Cat B vs Cat A rookies in terms of max length on that list. If it's the same rules then AMW can stay for a 3rd year while KFW can remain for a 2nd.

D Smith is playing in his third year so a decision will have to be made there to promote or delist. K Turner has unfortunately been injured all year but perhaps may be given another year.

In an ideal world, Jordon (reported that dees want to keep him earlier in the year) and Woewodin get new contracts.

With D Turner to be promoted to the senior list in 2024, that means it's highly likely all of Dunstan, Melksham and Hibberd will be off the list. I think D Smith will probably not get a senior spot unfortunately.

In this above scenario, that makes...

Out: 3 x senior listed playersr, 1 x "Cat-A" rookie

In: 1 x senior listed player (D turner)

We would then have 34 senior listed players and 5 "cat-A" rookies

As it stands, that would give us 2-3 senior spots for the national draft and 0-1 on rookie spots depending on how we choose to fill the list.

Of course it gets complicated with potential trades of contracted players like Tomlinson, Harmes and Laurie while Jordon may yet leave as a free agent.

i see a situation where as you say DSmith, DTurner and even KTurner move off rookie list either out or up and we delist and rerookie melky and hibbo that way ti free up the senior spots without actually losing the players who play important and slightly unique roles for us in the squad

How can McVee be a Category A Rookie and be playing every game. Surely he should be a "must" sign person ??

(This is written as an informational query not a comment ).

He has signed a contract extension already that promotes him to the senior list in 2025.

Im hearing Harmes is on circa 500K pa. If we were to move him on for scraps (3rd rounder) and traded Grundy out who is on reportedly 600-650K pa. Surely we could put a decent contract in front of a needed player? Then there is additional cap that maybe freed up by a retiring BBB or a departing Tommo. I doubt TMac will retire and probably need him for depth - if he does somehow get back to '18 or even '21 form it probably can make the 22.

Expecting we get 2-3 players from the draft including Brown's son so they'll be on minimum wage. Still leaves a potential treasure chest even if Grundy did stay.

Potentially.

But potential is wishful thinking until it isn’t.

From @Diamond Jim's post:

Here's a good article listing the 202 players by club who are out of contract at season's end.

I see it lists Schache who I thought had another year

Melbourne (8): Luke Dunstan (unrestricted free agent), Michael Hibberd, James Jordon (unrestricted free agent), Jake Melksham (unrestricted free agent), Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Josh Schache, Deakyn Smith, Kye Turner.

@Lucifers Hero when you get back from holiday you could update him in the table, thanks

Melks and Hibberd should be given September to prove their worth for 2024.

Theyll be on small coin but still very good money . Longtime retired.

JJ best to look elsewhere if he can find a home. Dees are probably looking already. 3rd round pick swap?

Looks like Tmac and Brown are finished unfortunately. Payout?

Tomlinson required player.

Harmes?  Tough call. No idea.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
