You'd assume its only a matter of time, especially with question marks about the long-term futures of Harmes, Jordon and Dunstan (for various reasons), could be a depth player in 2024.

I wondered about making Woewodin a rookie, if we need the list spot for a draftee or traded in player.

Thanks LH great effort, just Kozzie, Chandler, JJ and Woey to lock in now.!!!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in discussions around the management of our list.  Surely we'd have to be bulging at the seams right now to fit everyone in wouldn't we?

I rate Kozzy incredibly highly - as everyone does.  His goal kicking ability, supreme skills and big external offers would have to see him on a huge contract.

Can't see us trading any big name players in over the next year or two and thinking we'll surely be hitting the drafts to keep the player payments down.

Love your work @Lucifers Hero

it's great we have very few concerning FAs in the list. Petty RFA and Spargo UFA in 2025 are the only two I can see. I assume you've allocated them that way because you've guessed a salary differential?

I'm not overly concerned with Harmes UFA next year, he may want to look elsewhere for more consistent midfield opportunities and I think we would be OK with that.

We do have a swathe of 10 year UFAs but that can't be avoided.

Yes, I guessed their possible salary ranking.  I'm thinking of just making them all 'FA'.

Quite a swathe of 10 year UFA's!  Unfortunately, players OOC in the second half of this decade will mostly retire or are UFA's so we will lose about half of our 2021 premiership team; a real talent drain.  Young players will come through but it will be tough replacing those that go.

Yes it's a tough call to identify the top 10 paid players on the list. Kossie could well be in there along with Petty so both RFA? Harmes and Spargo are almost certainly not in there. Rivers too. So all UFA.

Maybe a question mark or asterisk on the presumed RFAs and keep the UFAs as-is because they look safe to me.

Well we won’t know until the time either what the top 10 paid are. Also I heard that list sizes will go down 2 when Tassie comes in so that 25% may be altered.

I might need reminding on the FA rules; is it any OOC player outside the top 25% earners after a certain number of years? How long has Jordon been around?

Correct.  After 8 years.

Jordon has only been around 4-5 years but because we 'delisted' then rookied him to accommodate covid list sizes, that delisting made him a UFA whenever he is OOC at mfc.

It's 8 years and top 25% for RFA otherwise UFA. 10 years UFA. Delisted and redrafted is UFA for life - that's JJ, he was delisted and then rookied.

I have put together an estimate of the current MFC salary cap position. As player salaries are not public, I have made best estimates on what each player contract value is. (I know the dollars will not be correct for specific players and I am not going to argue with anyone about these amounts, but it is the total amount and conclusion that matters.)

My conclusion is that we are almost certainly, in effect, running above the salary cap this season and probably will be effectively running above the cap next season. This is permitted (so I am not saying we are likely to get in trouble here) and would be achieved by backloading some of our bigger contracts into future years.

For this reason, and because we will still want to retain Chandler and D Turner (and probably Jordon and Woewodin) and because we will need to fill our list spots, I cannot see us being a big player in the trade or free agent markets this year. We may also look to offload some players, including Harmes, TMac, Brown or Tomlinson to free up salary over the next trade period, albeit I am not sure we will be able to do this easily without paying a portion of their remaining salaries.

At the moment we have 6 uncontracted players on the senior list, which will need to be filled by draftees, current players or players on other AFL lists.

I don’t believe there has been clarity on the level salary cap beyond next year, but I think we can assume it will go up by around 10%.

Not going to argue specifics but i think you're heavily overestimating on a few here, imo

fritsch wouldn't be on any more than 5-550

salem 550-6

fairly certain BBB is on more like 400 because we gave him extra length on his roos deal, at the most its 500

i don't think we'd be going over this season and if as you say contracted players were to leave i don't think we'd pay a cent for them to move. Realistically we're discussing harmes and tommo here. they want opportunity and career longevity, that is why they'll potentially move. oppo club comes to them and says we see you're on 500 for next season and don't have a deal in place for 2025 right now. Here's a 3yr deal till 2026. you get 400 every season, so yes were taking 100 off you next year but you're getting it back and some plus you have a place to play and an extra 2 years you didn't otherwise have and were no certainty to get at the dees. that is legitimately how contracts in trading works, it's how it worked when we lured BBB across as he was well paid by norf on his expiring deal but they only wanted to give him 1-2 years longer and how geelong could afford bowes, and how will brodie fitted in at freo. but the giving club doesn't pay any of the $ but the player gets it in career length rather than a 1 year longer and out of the system type set up

There might be some I am over on, but Oliver, Petracca, Gawn and Lever could be on more than my estimate.

The real point is that we are unlikely to be able to be big players in free agency, as the future owed number is so big.

I wonder if we would be winners if the salary cap went up significantly, or would the contracts be amended upwards?

In your opinion only.

Oh FCS, I did something similar to Fat Tony last year and was howled down; we would have very little cap space with the list we have and the fact that we absorbed Grundy and have resigned Pickett.

Unless we move players a few middling first teamers or a star - we aren’t getting big names.

Melbourne’s worst fears about the absence of Max Gawn were realised when it received a shellacking from Fremantle’s ruckmen Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson who dominated the hit out tally in their game at Optus Stadium on Sunday by a massive 47 to 19. As a result, the 50-point deficit at the end of the game proved to be a loss that was long foreseen that was two years in the making and demonstrated a complete lack of hindsight and planning from the club.
