Outcomes of Season Review

Featured Replies

Has there been any revelations from Goody etc from our 2022 Season review? The consistent theme of how we lost all 7 games inc both finals in the same fashion, leading at 1/2 time and then losing, was it fitness in particular with Burgess leaving? was it mindset by the the players?

Suspect they have done that and know that answers

Doubt they will air them publicly

The question will be whether the coaching staff change the game plan or continue with the same old same old that got them to second on the ladder

I hope they add variety because clubs have worked us out and the predictability killed us

8 x 90 pts or more scored against us vs 2021 only one did that happen.

Dysfunctional forward line I believe. 😂

Dysfunctional connection between mids and forward line more specifically I would think.
Or dysfunctional forward game plan rather than (all) the individuals.

They won't. Anyone thinking it will be is a fool.

I think this much has been publicly acknowledged by the club and was one of the key reasons stated for recruiting Lauchie Hunter.

Missed TMac.

delivery inside 50 too predictable

got our conditioning program wrong

Too many niggles and injuries at the wrong time

I agree.  The cats seemed to manage player loads far better than us to be healthy at the end of the season.

But I think it is part of a learning curve, it was the first time we made a GF in 20 years and how players are managed the following year was a new process for the club and as far as I'm aware the support staff as well.

We'll be better for it in 2023.

Recently bumped into a colleague who is chummy with one of the board members. When he spoke with him post season he mentioned that the players were over confident but that’s it. Doesn’t explain the lack of fitness and fade outs though.

You probably won't hear anything until the eve of next season in a  short interview with a player or staff member and a couple of off the cuff lines about how we identified the issues and believed we have addressed them, this will be as good as it gets.

Why would the Club make that information Public, just so SEN and Slob.bo can talk about it ad Nauseum

The main problem we had in 2022 was that TMac went down in Round 10 and could not return.Sam Weiderman sadly was not up to it as a replacement.

There would be other problems, but unless one is inside the Footy Department, no one can make any definitive observation

They did have a very easy run home which allowed them to do this.

I think the recruitment of Grundy will force a change in game plan for the better. No team will be able to match up on it, especially if we also get Van Rooyan (sp?) firing up forward. Interesting time ahead…

I think if May kicks out to the left after each point and we kick to a pack in the forward pocket we will smash it this year!

A mate spoke to a players father who said we had 11 injured players playing in the finals. We know quite a few of them like Lingers for instance carried injuries for a lot of the season. Injuries can limit how much they can train which in turn eventually effects their ability to run out games. Might explain a lot. More likely explanation than Cats got conditioning right and we got it wrong.

Agreed. There was also an unfortunate, quite inadequate 'blooding' of players performing well at Casey, as well; this may have relocated (on the field) some of the under-performers to a different role ... or replaced them depending on how well the adaptation of younger players might have been ... but just the same, we were static so often across the season and towards the last few rounds, had no options for the injuries, drops in form, game plan modifications. Cripples, we were, physically, mentally and psychologically. Goodwin, get onto it before 2023 is a disappointment, as well.

Add to this the sense that 21 just rolled into 22 without enough of a break, both physically and mentally. Not to mention missing key players, especially McDonald and (effectively) Salem. But it was clear that players like Gawn, Langdon and Lever were carrying something, at least for the last part of the season.

It all adds up.

Hmm, I see Grundy as a better short term option than Jackson so it might be that Goodwin is licking his lips saying 'now I can really see our strategy working'. He is to me quite stubborn so it wouldn't surprise if he tries to keep the same game plan but with better personnel.

And that would be a worry because teams picked apart our game plan this year. 9 times teams kicked more than 90 pts against us vs once in 2021

We were stagnant and predictable this year. Everyone knows we were beaten the same way. And if teams don't kick it long to Lever and May we aren't very good at defending.

Our record against Coll and Syd are atrocious.

I think it would be a big mistake not to evolve our game plan and introduce some flexibility into it. Grundy will give us options and I hope we build a suite of options for different scenarios

And that’s the coach and selectors fault. All year they refused to play Casey players. Goodwin and co cost us massively in the second half of the year. We looked flat, we looked crud yet nothing changed. It was dumb and must have been deflating for Casey players in form watching the seniors struggle.

The frustrating thing was Casey lost 1 game yet no changes made after losing our first final , Bedford sent a message

Through no fault of the club due to lockdowns etc the December mcg celebrations just felt  as though the sesame just dragged on for too long

Yes, because playing players who had consistently failed at senior level was a sure-fire recipe for success.

I’m of the same thought now - we never looked right all year. I suppose the upside is we still finished 2nd despite the clear fitness and injuries.

Heres hoping for a better preseason and renewed vigour and focus for 2023.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
