Yep, heard Lyon on SEN... said he had spoken directly to the source and that no meeting had taken place.

Didn't hear Lyon's comments so not sure exactly what he said, but Harmes has spoken with Essendon. Don't know how much chance to move, but he has 100% spoken to them.

The reaction on here is something else…

Harmes has a role with little midfield time that the club may see as insurance we don’t need with Sparrow and Jordon and not ideal because he struggles in other aspects to his role on wing and in the forward line.

This is ripe for a team hell bent on flags to look to move on to better position ourselves in other areas.

Also James believes he is mid but we need outside run to compliment our bulls, and we have to find it and play it somehow and somewhere.

If it does happen, it might be best for all parties.

I thought that the point of trading players was that you improve your list.

Letting Hunt walk for pick 52 (a pick we may not use) is a clear step backwards.

Getting rid of Harmes for anything other than a top 10 player would be an even bigger step backwards, and even then I would be reluctant given his versatility and cultural importance. If the reason for doing so is to bring in damaged goods such Hunter, then this becomes even more questionable.

We have had a good reputation for respecting contracts and looking after players in recent times. Even the faintest hint to a player such as Harmes that he should consider his options whilst under contract is really disappointing. If nothing else, I would hate to be relying on Sparrow or Jordon to step up if we get injuries to one of the big 3 in the midfield.

Is that confusing the pick (#52) we get for Hunt?

Harmes will bring a much better pick.  If it is to be Essendon their #41 or better.  I would think a pick late in mid second round would be fair.

Harmes the permanent tagger is a best 18 player

Harmes the bit half forward, sometimes wingman and occasional midfielder is in our bottom 6

JH: hmm ok not sure, go dees but gee wonder if someone will pay me to be a permanent mid

You don't always get the draft pick No that your player is worth. You should know that but it should not inhibit a Club seeking to improve its list.

At the end of the day plsyers ste what they do there is no guarantee a draft no will play up to that expectation.

Hunty at best was exciting but is without his pace he would you have got over 100 games. I liked him but he dies maje some errors and needed to keep away from the last line of defence as he panicked under that pressure.

Good that he will not feel under as much pressure at WC and sorry thst he missed out in 2021 of his premiership chance.

A cruel blow but thanks Hunty for some exciting footy snd memories snd good luck for your future.

MFC BIO :

James Harmes' versatility may be his biggest strength as a footballer.

He started his career as a dangerous small forward, starred in the midfield during Melbourne's 2018 finals charge and played a role across half-back during stages of 2020.

He cemented his spot in the senior side in 2021, a key player in the forward line and through the midfield helped the team to a Premiership.

While his value on the field is evident, Harmes also brings an important energy off the field, being one of the most popular characters behind closed doors.

He has a bubbly personality and was recognised for his community work in 2019, receiving the Ian Ridley Memorial Trophy from his biggest fan, Jon.

Why is Harmesy talking to the Bombers!! They are a bunch of misfits right now. (And already have a stacked midfield- Merrett, Shiel, Parush, Caldwell, Hobbs, Mcgrath). Surely Something stinks !!!

Harnesy showed he’s still very much in our best 22 and can play the tag role better than anyone else in the team

here is the Semi Final best players from AFL WEBSITE

BEST
Melbourne:
Harmes, Petracca, Petty, Langdon, Oliver, Neal-Bullen

IN A BAD NIGHT, HE AT LEAST TRIED TO LIFT WHEN OTHERS FAILED

he averaged 20 disposals and 5 tackles across 2022 (second in tackles to Viney only) in reduced game time

Harmes still has 2 years to run on his contract

Heart and soul player

He and his family are lifetime Demons supporters

143 games and only 27

2021 premiership player… including the special  “kick” to Fritsch that saved the 21GF (ok a little melodramatic)

You simply couldn’t meet a better player to our supporters at any function.  He is a true clubman.

WHY WOULD HE BE SPEAKING TO OTHER TEAMS? And even worse Essendon !!!
So you’d have to think that he was he told during the exit interview that it’s be you are down the order in the midfield and expected to be pushed back further to allow Sparrow and Jordon more time.  (Is he not one of the coach’s favourites like Sparrow, Spargo or ANB!?)

Harmesy is a Melbourne man   He has flaws but so does every player. .

We love him - his footy, his passion, he gives his all.

Imv Harmesy should still be viewed strongly as a required player !!!

Agree well written SONS.

Sam Edmund reporting that Harmes asked to look around for more midfield minutes, and while Melb was happy for him to do that have since said over last weekend its not happening.

SEN backing out of the Harmes chatter as we speak

Sam Edmund just reporting on Harmes. He wasn’t able to get an audience with Scott over the weekend. Our FD has stepped in and said he’s a required player. He ain’t going anywhere.

Harmes wants more mid-field minutes. Spoke with the club earlier in the year. Had their ok to explore his options.

So the issue might be semantics.

Harmes might have spoken to Essendon, or his Manager might have spoken to Essendon, or his Manager may have had a meeting with Essendon, but Harmes has not had a Meeting with Essendon.

Then again what is a meeting?

And what is Essendon. One of the journos seemed to imply yesterday that Dodoro was on his usual mission to win trade week but Brad Scott has been far more focused on the draft.

I like hearing that.

I got the impression that Harmes wanted to meet with Scott and be given some sort of assurance that he  be given some midfield minutes. Maybe if Yze had got the Roos job James would have pushed harder for a clearance.

When the club comes out and says "Player X is a required player", I read that as "We won't be trading him for peanuts".

Good on us tho, we have a plan of what our list is to be and we won’t be dictated to by other clubs [censored] us around.

Ultimate Essendon, have a bloke wanting to come over and the coach can't even find the time

I wonder if the change from giving a 'blessing to look around' then 'shutting it down' was because a target we had hasn't eventuated.

Of course we will never know but it was a quick change of heart.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
