Extra "MAGIC" Round in 2023?

It sounds like the lightening Premiership, AFL X and every other gimmick they've had. I don't understand it nor do I understand extending the season by a game.

Want more footy? Want to extend the season a week? Here's a novel concept: Bring back State of Origin.

I would much rather see representitive football with the best players playing and training together than another round of teams either resting for finals or marching to their season deaths,

How many would bother travelling for this.

Airfares and accommodation would be at a premium.

Can't be Easter because the Giants ground is utilised for the Easter Show.

Giants have never had a crowd at their home game over 10k.

Just seems to me like an un needed TV event that NSW will pay big money for to the AFL

Giants vs Dogs Prelim 2016 21, ooo odd.

AFL won't work in state mode!

Waiting for the Magic Round and clash Magic Round guernseys to drop next. In the year 2050 there will be a special round where all teams actually wear their regular guernsey in celebration of not celebrating something.

The best part about SoO in the modern game is it would be completely one on one, no zones, no fancy defense, just the best players going at it in an old fashion style.

Given how much the AFL love a spectacle and a media circus, I just don't see why they aren't pushing this to be a thing.

The idea stinks.

But if it is going to happen it really should be in Sydney.

It’s designed for blokes weekends (and ladies of course, maybe some kids too) not for crowds of locals.

Sydney has multiple venues, the hotel rooms, more flights and a more to do the rest of the time.

So what’s SA’s answer to an alternative venue as I can’t fathom 9 games being played at Adelaide Oval over 4 days unless they’re willing to have two sets of triple headers at AO.

Barossa gets mentioned in the article and it’s not completely mad.

Sydney has a stronger case but the reality is there’s no much difference between Giants stadium and any of the SANFL grounds or Thebarton Oval where the Crows women play.

GWS/GC v a smaller Vic, Bris, Freo at an off broadway time in Adelaide isn’t going to sell out a SANFL ground. In fact you’d probably get away with that in a double header.

Many of those grounds are close to the Adelaide CBD so make it easy.

SA Premier needs to up his bid.

Crowd attendances are irrelevant to the AFL as the whole thing is paid for by the "winning State"

I suppose the fact that it's an extra round softens the usual screaming by clubs about losing a home game. Going by the Shanghai fiasco competing clubs were asking for $1M plus expenses to be Port Adelaide's dance partner/bunny.

TBH I hate this idea but as usual... anything for the money

Good idea if it gets rid of pre-season matches, as is proposed.  So the players won't be affected.

Now watch Gil give it to Tassie in the first year.....and we get allocated Queenstown as the ground to play at:

😍 Spent many a childhood summers running around that dustbowl. Don't know if they could handle a friday night fixture though. No worse than kardinia I suppose

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion of course.

However, is the idea really that bad?

The magic round replaces a round of practice matches that nobody cares about. And all clubs still get their 11 home games.

The weekend of 9 March - 12 March 2023 may as well be used for home and away footy as opposed to the 9 televised practice matches that took place in the corresponding weekend of 2022.

Not sure how you arrive at that view.

Practice games play an essential part in the pre season build up. They give exposure to fringe players by using extended benches and allow older players to ease into the season. Playing for points removes all of these benefits

Yeah I don’t see the problem. The playing of ‘official’ practice games is a waste of time and opportunity for players to get injured.

The idea of putting it one state is odd because we aren’t the NRL - more than two states care about our game.

But it can certainly get the attention of an area all weekend.

I can't get out of my mind that some marketing genius got paid $$ for coming up with the gimmicky promotional idea of "23 in 23", meaning 23 rounds of football in 2023 and now the AFL is trying to retrofit the schedule to fit the idea.

we all know the world is weird, ldvc. and getting more weird as time goes on.

but don't worry when we get to 2034 and have 34 in 34 we will have a fairer (note i said fairer, not fair) fixture where we all play each team twice. of course this assumes we'll still have 18 teams which is higher unlikely

the idea is surely a joke

purely a crass money grab

That covers it DC. The AFL is addicted to money they will do anything that increases their coffers.

The AFL is so good at being the forefront of popular causes.

As such it is great to see them reducing their carbon footprint by unnecessarily flying the entire league (plus 1000s of hangers on) across the country for an event that nobody asked for.

Imagine how much they could achieve by throwing this money at local leagues and clubs.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
