Sadly, we lost at the draft table when we chose Luke Jackson over Young. Hayden was interviewed by Melbourne and according to close family sources (reliable information as they are close friends),he had told his family that he was going to be a Demon. But the powers to be changed their mind and opted for Jacko. What a win for Freo! They gained a champion defender and its all but certain they will get Jackson as well. Hayden is a great interceptor and those long ( and I mean long), accurate kicks are sublime. But its no use crying over spilled milk is it?

Did you watch the 2021 AFL Granny?

Many, many times. But we lose Jackson after three seasons when we could have had Young for his career. Re  Jacko though, did you watch the game just played against Sydney? Didn't do much did he?

I'm in full agreement.

Hayden Young is going to be an absolute champion of the game. An absolute champion. His composure in his first final as a 20/21 year old was first class. Imagine the highs this kid is going to reach in his prime years of 23-28. Not to mention he's had a fabulous third season of football.

We weren't the only club to overlook him but hindsight will say we made the wrong call for a multitude of reasons.

Young is currently a better player than Jackson, and will also end up being the better player.

Jackson's had a mostly woeful season and probably won't feature in the top 15 of the best and fairest.

Who's played 8 games?

Young's played 20 games this year at an average of 23 touches a game.

oh, wikipedia said 8......must be out of date

F&@$ some people around here have short memories.
Without Jackson we don’t win Number 13 and it would be 58 years….

Imagine Hawthorn supporters' disgust at drafting Buddy from WA (pick 5), then leaving Hawthorn in the middle of his career for an interstate team .... when they could have had John Meesen (pick 8) for his entire career!

At least you would have been happy that we had a whole career of Jack Watts, rather than that West Australian Nic Naitanui.

What a terrible, terrible post.

Not entirely sure I agree with this.

Takes a team of soldiers to win a flag, not an individual.

Seriously, give it a break.

So you're not a Jackson fan.

We will never know the answer to this but if we took Young ahead of Jackson (there's a pub in there somewhere) would we have won the 2021 GF?

Would we have even made it to the 2021 GF.

Some people are glass half full, some half empty but sometimes I think you've lost the glass.

All this talk about Young and Jackson has me yearning for a big glass of beer.

be honest, ds. you really mean an eyeful of chloe  😂

Silly thread, though I was keen on Young at draft. Jackson is a demon now, Young is not.

If Jackson requests a trade to Freo, then a straight swap for Young would be a good result. Unlikely to happen though as why would he leave the Dockers on the rise after signing a 5 year extension.

It's absolute nonsense and a slap in the face to the entire team to suggest we would not have won a flag without Jackson.

I'm fairly sure Trac, Oliver, JV and Fritta had a say in proceedings.

a jigsaw puzzle completed by having all the right pieces (at the time).

Sliding doors we'll never know but can't begrudge any move that helped us break the drought.

Not according to this video..

The selection was out of Jackson and Tom Green of GWS.

No mention of Young.

Don't forget the glass is re-fillable. For Jackson to get to Freo (or anywhere else, for that matter) we'll get something juicy in return. For example, it may be a couple of early draft picks from which we might end up with a player or two who help win a future flag or flags.

I think we gotta let this one go. Yes there were some talented kids in that draft but the what ifs are just going to drive us all crazy. We chose who we did and he helped us win a flag. Young is going to be great, I'm a massive fan but we've really gotta look forward now and plan for the future.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
