We're trying to win the flag.  Geelong and Sydney's intercepting defenders will eat JVR for breakfast, we've gotta stick with Melksham.

Why would they eat him for breakfast? Is that because he is young or based on his specific running patterns?

Personally, I disagree on both fronts. I think he offers something when ball hits the ground and is arguably less predictable for the opposition as a target because they haven’t had a proper look at him.

AA Tom Stewart vs 2 gamer JVR - do I have to spell it out.

I guess there was a press conf this morning petracca-100-per-cent-playing-but-forwards-give-goodwin-a-headache

Interesting comments:

Goodwin said the midfielder would play his normal role but admitted the side’s forward woes were causing him some selection headaches as they contemplated including key forward Jacob Van Rooyen on debut or Tom McDonald after he returned from a foot injury in the VFL a fortnight ago.

Goodwin conceded that on reflection Max Gawn should have been given more time in the ruck with Luke Jackson spending more time forward.

So Goodwin has decided that to take the best ruckman in the league away from the ruck and play him in the forward pocket was not a sensational idea? If only he read Demonland.

Yep, the time to debut JVR was 6 weeks ago. It's too late now. You cannot bring in a child to play a key role against men who have 200+ games of experience behind them. The best thing about Melksham is that he knows how to drag the interceptor away from the contest. JVR would have no idea how to do that yet, and he isn't proven enough to demand a key defender on him.

It is a super duper risky move, that could actually set him back.

However, it's balls to walls time and we have everything to lose. So if they do bite the bullet I will support it.

Spargo will not have to communicate in the normal fashion - vocally. It should be sufficient for him, wearing a bright red'n'blue scarf, to utilise hand gestures, arm flailing, zig-zag movements to attract even more attention whilst racing  in context to pre-discussed spaces in the forward line free to rip the intestines out of confused and disoriented Brisbane backmen.

Charlie Spargo communicating.

t's about ball movement.

And that's a Goodwin imprint.

And when you say it's hardly a "super list", are you referring to the forwards alone?

We are instructed to kick to pockets on slow plays. It's been drilled so far into the players' pyches that they consistently miss hittable options elsewhere.

I agree with that. I think our list is very good without being great, and the coaches crafted a premiership winning game plan based upon an elite defensive system and an offensive system based around powerful mids blasting it quickly to tall forwards.

With a short preseason they didn’t change much, and we’ve come up only a few key moments of discipline and skill execution short of hosting a home prelim.

We need to strengthen and balance out the list with midfield runners and some fresh flanker talent, plus solve the talls. Our midfield and half back depth is really poor for a good side (Bowey, JJ, daylight) and our half forward depth is super uninspiring.

Are there game plan things we can try in the short term - yes. But we’ve done them in first halves v top 4 sides in Sydney and Collingwood in the last month or so and done them pretty well. We were hitting Fritsch up beautifully last week. Ask any neutrals about the standard of footy in Melb Syd or Melb Coll and they’ll both say it was high level stuff.

Most of the selection talk involves taking away key players in the defensive game plan and replacing them with Casey players in the hope that produces a 4 quarter effort. That I don’t agree with.

Goodwin said in todays Presser when asked about JVR said he "...would not hesitate to play JVR in a big final..."

Who knows but it wasn't each way bet - he was clear on this.

I can't believe our season could be over tomorrow night

our form line in the past 13 games

6 wins 7 losses.  not even finals form, let alone flag form

*still flat!  I need to fire up by tomorrow night!

Just play JVR ffs

Hard ask on a wet windy night, in a sudden death final, to blood a key forward.

I seem to remember a 4th gamer in Jesse Hogan rinsing multiple AA fullback Alex Rance.

Extraordinary use of rhyme, alliteration, cliches, mixed metaphores and all mixed up with unwavering support. Top post.

All I'm saying is don't discount him. He's extremely hungry and probably will be even more so in a do-or-die final. JVR doesn't strike me as the kind of player to be overawed, either.

Would do better than Gawn (forwardline) , Brown and Fritsch on a wet and windy night.

Van Rooyen is a better ground player than all of them.

Not sure this is rocket science and Brisbane are not a defensive team. If he was to debut in finals, this is exactly the game for it. Not a game for Fritta, not a game for Gawn and definitely not a game for BBB. So where does our score come from?

A bit of youthful energy could create a special kind of chaos. I guarantee he won't be the reason we lose - if we do, give the kid a run!

Goody said that Max will play in the ruck more that week.  This tells me that JVR will come in

I'm not making this up,  but to make you feel better.....read on.

Brenton Sanderson on Whately this morning discussing strategy believes the Dees win by 30, but likely more (he used the words Blow Out)  and hypothesised that Goody will need to be thinking now about who he takes off half through last 1/4 if  t is looking good, to save for PF.

Trac was the one he suggested should be rested first under these circumstances. Goody did as such in 2021 PF also.

Just passing this on. I'm not into betting, but the punters on TAB agree with him.

A bit of stoicism, expect the worst and hope for the best.

We've got a good chance. We will be in it all night. If we lose, then it would have to be that we played badly.

I believe it is in our hands.

You beauty, another finals match to watch, no matter the outcome

Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder.
