No matter how well we are playing when good sides start challenging and apply manic pressure we wilt. Been a pattern all year, we just fade away. All our losses to  Freo, Pies, Bulldogs, Cats, Swans we were in the game and in winnable positions. We lose our shape and let them roll over us.

What about the 50m penalties… very undisciplined by the team. 2-3 goals from there made the end margin more than it ought to have been. Obviously the Franklin one wasn’t there but still.

I didn’t see Petty move at all, so not sure why Reid got 50 ?

Sydney knew before the game started they were ok to do whatever they liked, and they did

We're not playing the "G" well. Whenever we tried to take it through the corridors and not the boundaries we got found out.

We seem to spoil each other by wanting to go at least two up in the pack, and we continually kick to contested and congested areas.

I thought we were doing alright, but we have to take those opportunities.

Great pressure from the Swans, we didn't handle that well. Many were fumbley and panicking.

Need stronger leadership, to create a steadying mindset.

We get to watch an extra final, if we can pick ourselves up and get our winning form happening at the "G".

Mate you need goals to fuel the energy, [censored] me Melksham wasting all those goals. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to scream like a madman only to be disappointed by the butcher Melksham

Nah that's crap, Melbourne supporters sat on their hands all night, only a couple of goals in it early in the last and couldn't get a [censored] peep out of them. I hate to say it but we have one of the worst group of supporters in world sport. Kick off the tartan rugs and make some bloody noise, it was noticeable from the first bounce and didn't get better even when we got in front. It's embarassing.

Tonight walking out of the ground I just felt really sorry for Melbourne supporters. Last year was something truly special and we didn’t get to see it, and share it together.

That's the overriding feeling for me too

Same, all of us walking out with our heads down and trying to disappear into the night...  Exactly like most of the other games I have attended in my life, when was really hoping to capture something from last year

Pickett wandered into protected area(marginal).

People commenting on crowd noise need to include a disclaimer if they were not there. Comments like “Sydney crowd seemed louder” just sounds like you were not there and have NFI.

I was there, southern stand wing. Sounded like a morgue.

So if we can beat the Lions how fresh will our legs be against the fresh legs of the Pies or Cats?

One thing that can help us is the bye weekend before the finals

And can only playing fortnightly (pre finals bye & QF win through to a PF) during the finals effect a team's ability to be switched on and not become a tad rusty?

Probably not so much for the latter argument but the bye before the finals can mean that a team isn't leg weary going into a prelim (as what as often previously occured)

And does anyone truly believe that we can't beat the Lions?  The Swans would have absolutely smashed Brisbane tonight with their all-over defence (they also beat us the same way but they didn't smash us)

Sure, it's disappointing to lose but there's no point dwelling on a loss

Heads up and get on with it should be the message to the players from the MC

Apparently Pickett ran into the protected area. But it appeared far enough away. Ridiculous decision.

Umpire said Kossi ran into the protected area which was absolute garbage.

I’m agreeing, I was front row next to the interchange and Choco TWICE tried to gee the crowd up in M50.  Barely a peep and was actually embarrassing

was harsh

Feel really dee-flated.

But the boys just need to reset and go again. We can beat Brisbane with our best footy! Not eliminated and still a chance.

It might not be this year but we'll be thereabouts for a while yet. Just gotta ride it out.

Max Gawn is not and never will be a forward. I hate this experiment with a passion. Almost as much as I hate Gus in the guts when he is clearly a far better player on a wing or at half back.

Are we just buckling to his demands to play inside? Because honestly it’s made us worse.
Harmes needs to go back inside to play a defensive role. Gus to the wing to replace JJ.
And please FFS we have to find a better option than Fumbles Bullen. He kills us with ball use. Play Bowey in that role. Can’t do worse.

The game was boring. I go every week and have done since 1987. It was an un-finals like game with defence winning for both sides. There was nothing to get enthused about. There was noise after a couple of goals, the members even joined the Melbourne chant and the place was rocking. Problem was, they automatically replied with a goal and the wind was taken out of the crowd’s sails again

The momentum turned massively when Buddy flopped like he’d been shot.

He got into May because he hadn’t had a touch and May fell for it. Because he’s May

May did nothing, Buddy flopped the umpire got sucked in and both should be ashamed watching that on replay. Give me a spell.

Franklin is a [censored] cheat.

That's exactly what you do to prolong your career when age catches up with you. Will become a serial flopper.

Yep, sound was good in the no alcohol bay.  Chanting and support all the way up until part way through 4th quarter, when it just became the occasional plea for improvement.

However the sound really carried from those drums or whatever it was that Sydney fans were banging on?

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
