If you're out then so am I. Trade pages without input from Ethan '#newsbreaker' Tremblay just doesn't make any sense.

It was always up to Jack whether he was going to be a star.Ā

I don't believe he wanted it enough but that's just my opinion

Providing he had a healthy mindset for sure. No doubt though he would have stood a much better chance regardless.Ā

I knew a recruiter from another AFL club who described Schache as the least competitive man of his size ever on an AFL list.

On another note, I see Hunter Clarke is a possibility to move clubs

With or without Jackson/Grundy the Dees should be looking at the likes of Meek, Frampton, McLean, Amartey and Elliot Himmelberg.Ā

This guy never saw Doyle play or Weid for that matter

Dont mind Amartey for second ruck

Very soon we will have an age profile and quality gap in our list of 18-22 year olds which will become a gap in the 23-26 age group and so on.Ā  We have players in that age group but not many have found a way to break into the team and only a couple have prospects of doing so in the next year or two.Ā  So quantity is ok but quality is a ?

This is happening while we have list deficiencies in critical positions.

In 2-3 years quite a few of our stars will be approaching or over 30.Ā  Many players go on to play well after 30 but how do we replace the quality of so many before their contribution starts to wane?Ā

Because we are successful and tend to trade out our future first pick we are unlikely to have access to the top dozen or so players in each draft.Ā  And we are unlikely to trade out our best players as they are on long-term deals.Ā  Our list will age rapidly.

To some this may not matter as 'we are in the premiership window' with a star midfield, defence etc. however if we don't start getting access to the pointy end of the draft I'm not sure we can sustain finals participation/be in contention for flags in the latter part of this decade.

As much as Taylor is a star he needs picks to work with to keep our list age/quality profile balanced and I'm not sure where pointy end draft picks are coming from in the next 3-4 years.

I much more optimistic about our the young component of our list.Ā

It's hopefully true that we won't have access to early draft picks for the foreseeable future because we'll be contending and all our best players are locked in on long contracts, but we'll still have a first rounder each year and Jason Taylor has a proven track record with later picks.

Assuming absolute worst case scenario that Luke Jackson goes to Freo and we convert him into Brodie Grundy and a replacement for our missing 1st rounder this year, our 18-22yo list is looking solid.

Future AAs (2): Pickett, Petty.
Proven premiership players (5): Spargo, Bowey, Jordon, Rivers, Sparrow
Likely AFL-level (6): Bedford, Laurie,Ā JVR, Howes, Chandler, Turner
Development (5): Rosman, D.Smith, Woewodin, McVee, AMW

I'm assuming Baker will be delisted and it's probable that Bedford or Chandler will leave for more opportunity this year.Ā  Even if only half the "Likely AFL-level" and one of the "Development" players make it, we've got 11 players or half a team in that list.

We should also be able to free very significant salary cap and be heavily involved in the FA market.Ā  As has been posted elsewhere, we need to continuously turn the list over to make sure that the young players are getting AFL opportunities and stay the journey with us.

From @Lucifers HeroĀ excellent contacts thread, we have the following players coming out of contract over the next 3 years and I think we can probably move all of them for cap and list space.Ā  Maybe recontract some on short-term deals and bring forward the trade of others.Ā  That's 11 off the list with a hell of a lot of cap money freed up.

2022: Hibberd, Melksham, Hunt
2023: Dunstan, ANB, Weideman, Tomlinson
2024: B.Brown, Harmes, McDonald, J.Smith

I think there's every reason to expect that Max and Steven May can play into the 2025 season, Max is already contracted and I expect May to get a solid contract extension next year.

Our 2025 22, taking those changes into account and not adding any new draftees or FAs, looks very competitive:

B: Rivers May Lever
HB: Salem Petty Brayshaw
M: Langdon Oliver Jordon
R: Grundy Petracca Viney
HF: Spargo JVRĀ Bedford/Chandler
F: Pickett Gawn Fritsch
I: Bowey Sparrow Howes Laurie

In 2026 we've still got Turner in the hopper as a potential replacement for May and we've got 4 draft, trade and FA years to find a ruck/forward replacement for Max.

I reckon Weid is more competitive than Schache, but has less natural talent and gets outbodied way too easilyĀ

I agree in the sense that Weideman is like clay and Schache is like jelly.Ā

Hopper has officially nominated the tigers as his club of choice with a year left to run on his contract. Will be interesting to see how the Tigers go about acquiring both him and Taranto.

I just don't understand why we wouldn't throw our hat in the ring for Taranto instead of Grundy and pick up a cheap ruck/forward option.

Can never have enough gun mids and I rate Taranto higher than Hopper.

Richmond are creating a nice cluster of players in Bolton’s age group. Chips have been moved from Dusty/Cotchin/Riewoldt as the centrepiece of the list.

if - and it's a fairly sizeable if, i would have thought - the tigs can bring in taranto and hopper then they'll have rebuilt their midfield overnight

they're going to be giving up access to first and second round for 2022 and 2023 in order to do so, i would expect

Either that, or he wouldn’t have lasted nearly as long as he did.

Agreed.

Watts didn't have what it takes to be a true professional. He had all the talent, but I think his heart was never 100% in it. Not too dissimilar to Hogan.

Stretch lasted on our list 2 years longer than he should have because he had all the desire and was a total professional, but he didn't have the talent to make it.Ā

Sometimes talent and desire don't meet up and that is ok. Not everyone is Clayton Oliver.Ā

Not a massive Taranto fan but love what Richmond are doing grabbing the pairĀ

Good list management, which I expect us to do from 2026 onwards to start bringing in Clarrie and Tracs replacements to compliment the handoverĀ

Ā

Richmond know that while they have Lynch they need to have a midfield to get enough ball there. Bolton is just the cherry on top that can steal you a close one.

I might cop it a bit here but an article today suggested Hunter Clark may be open to a move. Been injury prone but if we back our staff to get him fit he could slot well into the back half for life post Hibberd.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.Ā  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.Ā

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking?Ā I mean by ā€œtheyā€ the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack.Ā Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winningĀ 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
