I'm all for more prime-time FTA games But they need to get the right match-ups in the right city's on the right days

Demons at Cats on a wintry Thursday night doesn't come into 2 of those categories

It wasn't so long ago that maximising crowd numbers was no.1 on the agenda

So we get to watch a game at home or at the pub when the venue is 1 hour away

Play the game at Docklands under the roof and compensate the Cats home ground loss with a higher dividend when they hand out the cash at year's end

Mind you, anywhere, anytime, anyway still applies with regards to the winning of the game.  But that's not my point

It's the people's game so allow the supporters to attend a blockbuster fixture

I've been roped into a work function on Thursday night so I won't be able to watch the game. not happy

Wouldn't it be nice to a have a Saturday 1.45pm afternoon game at the G. Will we ever be scheduled for one of those again?

Yes, but they’re not complaining about the venue, are they. 

It’s Geelong’s home game so they should be able to play it where they want.

The issue I have is that only certain teams have to play there.

Oh, and that their stadium is totally tax payer funded.

LOL, this is a great point. I have (too) many Essendon… excuse me for a sec… 🤮… supporters in my life and they’re currently enjoying the season knowing they have no hope of making the finals. They still go to games but are super chill about what’s unfolding.

People forget that for the first 90 years of the VFL, the fixture was built on playing each team twice, home and away. There were 8 teams and 14 rounds in the first VFL season in 1897. This nonsense that we have to be wedded to a 22-round season no matter the number of teams we have is, well, nonsense. The 22-round season only came into effect when the league had expanded to 12 teams in 1925. When the league moved to 14 teams in 1987, the season inexplicably remained at 22 rounds. 

Now, of course, the fixture is a complete mess having strayed more and more from first principles, leading to the quite absurd scenario pointed out at the top of this post and illustrated in the attached table.

Great post - this is, as we already know a complete and utter farce from a fixturing perspective

I would really like our CEO to forcefully put to the AFL that our annual trip to this dung heap should be replaced by Rich, Carl, Haw, Ess and of course the filth until such time as they all rack up 18 appearances down there

Mind you, the terror there is that for much of our darkest days, we were lumped playing one of the most in form teams of the 2000s at their home ground. Almost like it was an intentional kick in the guts.

I have emailed the club and asked them to follow up with the AFL - we can all rejoice if something comes of it 

Why play the best side in Geelong when you’re gonna have to play them at the G come finals?

Then again Geelong has been all about making finals and doing stuff all while there for a while now.

It's amazing we've been there so much compared to other sides. I actually really enjoy going down there so I'm glad it happens, but completely unfair from a footy perspective. 

I can't believe they ask to have a home final at Kardinia when they play some home games at the G. Cant have it both ways cats.

Actually there were 18 rounds for 12 teams for decades. They only moved to playing each team twice in the 70s I reckon. But I agree it's very micky mouse. Poms can't believe it when you tell them.

We've beaten them the last 3 times we've played them including a prelim shellacking. And don't forget we fixed em up in the 2018 elimination final too. These bastards loved sinking the boot in when we were rubbish. Let's them make our bunnies for a decade.

However where is your compassion, they had a virus, soon to be canonized Tom Stewart (Chris Scott said that, so it must be) is absent, Danger doesn't have his premiership yet, they have to play at home in the cold and they dont make excuses (we know because Chris says that a lot).
