It was a lot different when we weren't very good ... we were in that lower bracket of Melbourne teams shunted around everywhere.ย  Like it or not we had to cop it until we came good

But we're coming off a flag and despite what the naysayers would have you believe, our crowd numbers have been more than acceptable this season

We are pushing 65,000 members yet only 500 Demon supporters can attend the game played on a wintry Thursday night.ย  Terrible scheduling

I'm all for more prime-time FTA games But they need to get the right match-ups in the right city's on the right days

Demons at Cats on a wintry Thursday night doesn't come into 2 of those categories

It wasn't so long ago that maximising crowd numbers was no.1 on the agenda

So we get to watch a game at home or at the pub when the venue is 1 hour away

Play the game at Docklands under the roof and compensate the Cats home ground loss with a higher dividend when they hand out the cash at year's end

Mind you, anywhere, anytime, anyway still applies with regards to the winning of the game.ย  But that's not my point

It's the people's game so allow the supporters to attend a blockbuster fixture

Rant Over!!!

To be fair, not one cats supporter down this way (that Iโ€™ve spoken too, and itโ€™s a lot of them) wants this game on a Thursday night either.

ย

I've been roped into a work function on Thursday night so I won't be able to watch the game. not happy

Wouldn't it be nice to a have a Saturday 1.45pm afternoon game at the G. Will we ever be scheduled for one of those again?

ย

Geelong not really blaming a virus for last year's prelim final but actually are still, today's sun.

Yes, but theyโ€™re not complaining about the venue, are they.ย

Itโ€™s Geelongโ€™s home game so they should be able to play it where they want.

The issue I have is that only certain teams have to play there.

Oh, and that their stadium is totally tax payer funded.

This is what you get following a team that hasn't bottomed out since colour TV was invented. Imagine going into so many games confident of a win that it's a surprise when you're expecting to lose.

LOL, this is a great point. I have (too) many Essendonโ€ฆ excuse me for a secโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคฎโ€ฆ supporters in my life and theyโ€™re currently enjoying the season knowing they have no hope of making the finals. They still go to games but are super chill about whatโ€™s unfolding.

KEEP THE FAITH, CATS FANS!

I hate Geelong withh a passion, but now I like playing them becaue it give us another chance of twhpping their @sses. The only thing better than beating them after the siren in Rd 23 would have been do it in front of packed house of their feral supporters. Bring on Thursday night!

There is every chance that the late 50m penalty paid to Lever would not have been paid had there been a coercive full house of feral cats

Hereโ€™s something I prepared earlier.

Guess which team (other than Geelong, of course) has played the most times at Kardinia Park this century?

Melbourne. 18 times.

Guess which team has played the least times?

Collingwood. Zero. (Oh and Essendon once, Hawthorn and Carlton thrice.)

The lack of integrity and fairness in the fixture is, to me, the biggest blight on our great game. What elite, professional sporting league in the world would allow such a discrepancy to occur, where an โ€˜awayโ€™ team, a so-called big club, doesnโ€™t play at another teamโ€™s home venue for over 20 years, while another team plays there almost every frigginโ€™ year? It infuriates me.

Itโ€™s like telling Manchester United they donโ€™t need to play at Bournemouth, ever, while Liverpool does.

I am sick to death of the fixtureโ€™s inherent inequity, and our collective acceptance of it (or is it apathy).

If we canโ€™t have a pure 34-game home-and-away season (which would be fair and ideal for an 18-team comp), then letโ€™s have a 17-game season. Play each team once, alternate between playing at home one season and away the next, no questions asked, no compromises entertained. Collingwood plays down at Geelong, itโ€™s a sell-out, so be it.

People forget that for the first 90 years of the VFL, the fixture was built on playing each team twice, home and away. There were 8 teams and 14 rounds in the first VFL season in 1897. This nonsense that we have to be wedded to a 22-round season no matter the number of teams we have is, well, nonsense. The 22-round season only came into effect when the league had expanded to 12 teams in 1925. When the league moved to 14 teams in 1987, the season inexplicably remained at 22 rounds.ย

Now, of course, the fixture is a complete mess having strayed more and more from first principles, leading to the quite absurd scenario pointed out at the top of this post and illustrated in the attached table.

Great post - this is, as we already know a complete and utter farce from a fixturing perspective

I would really like our CEO to forcefully put to the AFL that our annual trip to this dung heap should be replaced by Rich, Carl, Haw, Ess and of course the filth until such time as they all rack up 18 appearances down thereย

Haha just saw @Sydeepost on this - excellent stuff (although really frustrating/maddening). Thank you :-)

Mind you, the terror there is that for much of our darkest days, we were lumped playing one of the most in form teams of the 2000s at their home ground. Almost like it was an intentional kick in the guts.

I have emailed the club and asked them to follow up with the AFL - we can all rejoice if something comes of itย

Why play the best side in Geelong when youโ€™re gonna have to play them at the G come finals?

Then again Geelong has been all about making finals and doing stuff all while there for a while now.ย

It's amazing we've been there so much compared to other sides. I actually really enjoy going down there so I'm glad it happens, but completely unfair from a footy perspective.ย

I can't believe they ask to have a home final at Kardinia when they play some home games at the G. Cant have it both ways cats.

Actually there were 18 rounds for 12 teams for decades. They only moved to playing each team twice in the 70s I reckon. But I agree it's very micky mouse. Poms can't believe it when you tell them.

We've beaten them the last 3 times we've played them including a prelim shellacking. And don't forget we fixed em up in the 2018 elimination final too. These bastards loved sinking the boot in when we were rubbish. Let's them make our bunnies for a decade.

I meant that they shouldnโ€™t be complaining at all. They have a cheek complaining about ANY aspect of ANY game that is played at that pimple on the face of the earth.ย

Short elegant and I think I can see what you mean.

However where is your compassion, they had a virus, soon to be canonized Tom Stewart (Chris Scott said that, so it must be) is absent, Danger doesn't have his premiership yet, they have to play at home in the cold and they dont make excuses (we know because Chris says that a lot).ย

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didnโ€™t just beat Gold Coast โ€” they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lionsโ€™ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Letโ€™s be honest, last weekโ€™s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper โ€” second versus seventeenth โ€” football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
