Sorry about my obtuseness earlier, @Neil Crompton and @DeeZone. I was being a smart**** by obliquely linking @Demonstone's Latin shorthand to his conundrumming, claiming a gold and throwing to others for the silver and bronze (compounding my smart****dness). I then edited a Caro reference in as a lame afterthought to be on topic i.e. would Caro know 'QED'?

I'll stop myself there (having shown myself out...)

Haha Even with that explanation I still have no idea what you said.

I don’t rate Caro and I don’t rate 95% of AFL journalists. As much as I like Garry Lyon, when he knows more about footy and articulates it better the majority of other AFL journalists then you know you have a quality control issue. I mean Damien Barrett and Hutchy are appalling. That little worm that they parade on SEN in the morning that Garry and Tim fawn over, just awful. I think AFL journalism is generally sub par in Melbourne. I can’t speak for the other states.

Rattan is outraged at the thought Hilly and Paddy did anything other than walk out once voices raised. He is either completely right or he believes fervently the CCTV is unavailable.

Is Sam McClure the Field Marshal on SEN? Or is it Sam Edmund or someone else?  I can never remember?

Completely incorrect. Plenty of male journalists I don’t like.

Know someone personally who was severely damaged by Caro’s “journalism”, and have watched her closely since, and seen her repeat the same style of manipulative content at the expense of people’s health/reputation etc on multiple occasions.

The hypocrisy in her statements around Jordon De Goey is off the charts :- as the latest of many examples.

When she reported on Ox's gambling issues she lost me, very grubby

Correct and Caro incorrectly doubted the validity of the personal leave on footy classified last night.

McClure literally reported the whole thing, made the insinuations, put out tweets, wrote articles, brought it up... But you're still gonna blame Caro? Come on mate, not doing your argument any favours there.

Fair call. No problems pinning that on McClure as well. He is no better.

Still think questioning someone lying about “personal leave” is extraordinarily hypocritical given her criticisms/opinions of others.

Yeah I'm with you on the personal leave stuff, have heard both Ratten and Lethlean talk about it and the undertones are that he's going through some stuff. I just blame McClure for it given he broke the story and chose to go with that angle.

Even the Caro-haters I'm sure would choose one of her articles over one of McClure's tho....

Why is the media put on such a pedestal when it unceasingly and deliberately does so much mortal damage to the community?

She can be a great journalist. She knows her trade, is uncompromising when she is following a story, and obviously has very strong contacts throughout the industry. All this developed in a world where the men in suits would have despised her as a woman being so strong, persistent and articulate.

But she makes the same mistake most modern sport journalists make: she reports rumour. She probably tries to substantiate it, but too often (maybe 2 out of every 7 "scoops") she will say stuff like "word out of Collingwood today", "or "there's a lot of talk at Essendon" etc...

Modern journalists must stop reporting rumour, suggestion, grievance and opinion as fact. If it is a rumour, let it be silent unless something gives it solid credibility.

As l said earlier in this thread, Caro has been a good AFL journalist, but has passed her “use by date”. Nothing better illustrates this than her increasing tendency for partisanship when it comes to Richmond (and her bias against the MFC). Indon’t think she can stand the thought that we just might be becoming an AFL. Superpower, more powerful than Richmond ever were, hence her coverage of thing MFC is consistently biased and offensive.

I can't stand the gossip columnists like Tom Browne and his ilk. But I don't count them as journalists (I have never been a Sam McClure fan, but at least he is a journalist)

But I don't get the angst towards proper journalists. It is their job to report news and if they can create noise all the better.

Why?

Because in the old speak, it sell papers. This has been the case since the first newspaper rolled of the press in the 1800s.

Don't shoot the messenger. Shoot the editor if you must shoot someone, but the blame for rubbish like the sun's Bartlett crusade should be sheeted home to the owner and ultimately consumers.

If we stopped clicking they would stop reporting.

I really don't know why people 'shoot the messenger' whether that messenger is Wilson or someone else.

They report what they are told so blame the people who are giving info to Wilson and others.  The 'leakers' are the ones who have an agenda.  If not why would they leak info about their club or players.

At least Wilson cross checks her info which is an AFL rarity.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    LAST DANCE by The Oracle

Forget the wishful thinking from Magpie fans who think their team can perform yet another miracle and somehow snatch a place in the 2024 finals series when their team takes on the Demons at the MCG on Friday night. It ain’t gunna happen. They can whistle Dixie through their non-existent front teeth but the fact of the matter is that both teams have run their race. The game is a dead rubber — for each of them, this will be the last dance of the season.  And given the history between the two

    RED FACED by Whispering Jack

The wind and the hot unseasonable temperatures together with lights turned on mid game at People First Stadium conspired to leave many Suns players and supporters red faced and gasping for air as the Demons proved a number of points on their way to a nine goal triumph on Saturday afternoon in the Carrara sunshine. Melbourne is the only non-Queensland team to taste victory at this venue in 2024. This surely leaves a number of journalists and media mavens red faced after they rushed to pass
