iirc Gil's salary/bonuses are primarily based on Revenue.  Broadcasting and related sponsor revenue dwarf that of attendance. 

Its a simplistic KPI.  I'm sure there are others but not sure game attendance is one or if it is, is a significant KPI.

If we see a trend away from the numbers we've currently got in terms of watching on the various platforms (FTA TV, Foxtel etc) then that can affect the money on offer for the broadcast rights

Now I'm not saying the above will happen but it could happen.  The AFL should be rightfully concerned and the TV execs would be concerned as well (as they are the ones forking out the dosh)

Very few people go to League games but they have good ratings and are now catching up to the AFL in media rights. Going is not everything these days. I suspect the AFL would sell all games to pay tv if they could. That actually might improve attending figures but it will never happen.

What I was suggesting Macca is smaller crowds don’t necessarily mean less interest.

Well my sample size of 20-30 people who I regularly talk footy with are often staying away for the reasons stated previously and the same people are watching way less neutral games.  It's fair to say that the sample size involves people over the age of 40, 50 or 60

The interest is still very high but the sport is not as good to watch on TV as other sports.  And in general, the over 40's are watching a different version of the sport than the version they were brought up on

They still like footy but I'm not sure they love it

The TV numbers during covid were great but that was when we were locked up and couldn't go to the games

What about your mates & acquaintances?  What are their habits re footy, old dee?

n.b. I also reckon that the TV numbers could be maintained or increased

Perhaps we should ban our players from visiting Greville St? I recall much publicised reports of an another ugly incident involving one of our former champions happening there a coupe of decades ago. Bad vibes lurk there.

Agree Macca I seldom watch other games. It is not as good to watch. Most of my friends are older like me. They seldom go to night games in winter. I have keen tiger fans who did not go last night. Just too cold and the don't like catching trains at night after a game.

Thursday night footy is seen as a success for the league as the broadcasters love it, but for the viewing public it’s an awful time to go for I would say most of the public. I understand the benefits the league gets from TV rights but there has to be a balance to ensure the fans are being looked after as well.

Putting aside TV numbers etc

Right now the issues surround crowd numbers ... and the AFL have admitted they have got a problem

Now they need to do something about it ... logistics, parking, cost of tickets, prices of food & beverages, covid/flu, weather, blaring music,  seating arrangements and then there is the game itself (umpiring, congestion, too many stoppages etc) which can all be addressed (although I'm not sure we can do much more re covid & the flu)

I wish the AFL well because I want to see the crowd numbers at big numbers again

All the events of this week are absolutely perfect. Media exaggerating and enjoying dragging us through the mud, everyone over-stating cultural problems and the like. All absolutely perfect. 

Our biggest threat to not winning the flag is ourselves, and more specifically complacency. 

All this week will do, is put some fire in the belly and switch the players on for the traditionally “hard slog” part of the season. 

And then ensure we don’t get complacent when we start playing at our best again.
