Go speak to people from our club or Port mate. Burgess doesn't post his whole fitness program online.

OK, so you have no evidence.  Thanks for clearing that up.

At least Binman is honest enough to acknowledge that it's a theory.

Google it mate.

Might I suggest listening to some of his online lectures and/or podcasts, I'm sure he drops a mention of it somewhere.

Not fussed if you choose to believe we're just all of a sudden super tired in the exact same period we were last year.

I have put a new curse on this club.  We didn't receive our scarves this year despite being told they were 'in the mail'. When I rang to query some months later was told condescendingly it was 'my fault' for not ticking a box...what a load of garbage. My family have contributed financially to the various dysfunctional versions of 'leadership' offered up by this club over the past 20 years, consistently buying memberships that we could not really afford. We seldom attended games but wanted to help out.

It's cheap, unprofessional and disorganized of the club to act with such arrogance and contempt. I am unsurprised that performance is dropping if this is how the show is now run. Everything counts when it comes to winning and even then you need to get lucky. If you can't respect your supporters, sharing in the success and honouring our commitment you deserve to lose!

This team are now hunted, predictable and slow.

Darren Burgess has been seriously underrated for the contribution to last years victory.

Of course there is no such thing as a curse. There doesn't need to be! Unacceptable Melbourne.

Also had a very unsatisfactory exchange with a general manager at the club. The arrogant, patronizing attitude was enough for me to never contribute financially to the club while that "ego" worked there. Amateur hour indeed!

Every team we have played this season bar a handful are putting on incredible performances. Teams want to play well against the reigning premiers. Sydney's game was very impressive and probably one of their best performances for a number of years. I hate the old cliche that premierships aren't won in June, because last i checked, you still need to win games to make the finals.

The talk of Melbourne easily running the table and all that jazz hopefully didnt get to the boys heads and that the whole 'philosophy of 'respect every team' is actually believed.  It is expected that being premiers will warrant this level of opposition intensity and attention and that is why going back-to-back is never easy and is only done by truly great teams.

The Melbourne of last year would have bounced back from the Freo loss (which tbh was probably more a matter of luck given Trac's illness and losing May).

The boy's do look flat, which suggests mental/physical tiredness,  illness throughout the club, or the 2022 MFC fashionable term 'loading'. We have also had a bigger struggle with injury this year, loosing Salem, Lever, Smith, TMac, Petty, Hibbo and then the COVID impact so continuity and connection isnt as good as it could be.

Big game against the Pies - lose this with the Lions next could start to seed a bit of doubt throughout the team.

That’s a great critique of umpiring - but this is about this particular game that was well umpired. We [censored] on them so much and here we have a game where Melbourne LITERALLY couldn’t capitalise on ONE mistake from Sydney and we have a few people blaming the umpiring?

There are so many excuses floating about this place atm. Let’s take some responsibility; whether it be for low crowds, losses, and sloppy play.

Ok I agree and hope the ill winds of injury, injustices and imprudence pass into scant memory.....

A good win would do.

I know they want Brayshaw to stay back and he's played very well in defence, but it's worth considering moving him back to the wing.  Structurally it worked well last year.

It also allows us to bring Rivers back, who we need to continue to develop.  Hibberd in for Hunt is another consideration.

A key forward with presence would also help.

Bowey to the half fwd line for some connection.

Langdon and Jordan on the wings.

Salo and Brayshaw play hbf.

IMO The defence is fine. Reid only got on top of Tomlinson when Petty was off for most of the 2nd quarter. The mid-forward connection is obviously concerning as well.

However, we are absolutely tired. Probably not from loading, probably because footy is an exhausting sport and we have a team of young players coming off shortened preseasons. Evidence of this, we jumped Freo and Sydney in the first quarter until they worked us over.

Our general work rate is lower this year across the ground but it suffers as the game goes on.

History shows that back to back premiership winning teams never do it with the exact same personnel or game plan. Standing still is going backwards in professional sport, and that is where we are at. Goodwin isn't prepared to change the game plan and he is determined to run with as close to the same 22/23 from last year as possible.

I'd argue that every team we have played in the past seven weeks has worked us out, but only in the last two weeks have teams been good enough to do something about it. Unfortunately for us, almost every team we play in the last ten games is at that level, so we're going to need to do something different and quickly.

We've got players horribly out of form, players clearly unfit or carrying injuries, and others who just need a rest. I'd almost be tempted to rest 5-6 players this week and give them a proper break before Brisbane in round 15. Reset and start again after the bye.

Personnel no, but game plan? Richmond used the same game plan for four years. Hawthorn used the same game plan for four years.

There's not a single thing wrong with Goodwin backing in our strengths. They won us 17 games in a row for a reason.

Personnel-wise, we've got too many players out of form and we do need some change, but we've been persisting with a new side all year - Hunt and Brayshaw in the backline, Smith too until injured, Jordon on a wing, ANB more time up the ground and Petracca more time forward. We've changed more than your post suggests.

Predictability is very easy to coach against, we are very  predictable.

This has been a pattern all year, we've just been shown up last 2 weeks by good teams that were able to breach the dam walls.

No need to panic but this "we'll just grind oppositions down and get the game back to a Melbourne game" ain't going to wash anymore.

Our stoppage spread and flat feet have been really frustrating to watch. We're constantly going forward from the stoppage. The opposition is just blocking this pathway, which is why we're constantly getting caught. The oppo is shrinking the field. Yze and Stafford need to come up with a solution to increase our workable area forward of D50. We just need different avenues to goal, which have been cut off by oppo tactics.

I trust we'll work around this, I'm not sure it's a work rate thing looks to me like there's a bit of hesitation on role and positioning.

Stoppages have little to do with the loss.

Zero goals from turnover.

We average 8 goals a game.

Its pressure that is missing; our predictable pressure.

Yep. As has been shown up in our pressure ratings status this year. We’re way off the mark of 2021, and particularly the last 2 weeks. Bring that back, and we’ll bounce again. The question is why it’s dropped off. The much discussed ‘loading’, the fatigue of being hunted, fatigue of wearing expectation, individual players dropping form (a consequence of any/all of the previous). Almost makes me wish we weren’t still top of the ladder. Also reinforces that footy is a week by week narrative, one that can change very quickly. Three things give me hope - firstly, that we are still a game clear on top of the ladder (despite our fortnightly form putting us ~ 10 - 14th position) thus diffusing panic, secondly, as reigning premiers, all those with influence know intimately what’s required, and thirdly, Tmac excepted, we are still in a sweet spot with lack of injuries. Despite that, on exposed form, I just can’t see us beating the sky-high with confidence Pies on Monday, whose pressure and contest game is currently the polar opposite of ours. They’re in their best form of years, and trust in it, and we haven’t been this beatable since the season-ending losses of 2020. Then again, as said, a week’s a long time in footy.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
