The best thing fitting into the 71-80 bracket is that I have seen and been to 7 premierships inc last year as the only "seen". I consider myself f-ing lucky compared to a lot of Dee"s supporters. Fit as I am (thanks to the good folk at the Alfred/Sandy) I hope to see quite a few more.

Go Dee's.

Mal,  seeing that no one on Demonland is over 80  does that mean we fall over then or do the deed ourselves.

when you get there let me know,  so I can make other arrangements

I am curious as to the age makeup of Demonlanders.  I suspect that, like our supporter base, it will skew towards the middle/top end.

Voters names will not be made public, so don't be shy!

How do you do a poll 'Stone? I tried to do one a couple of weeks ago and couldn't find the 'poll' option or any such thing.

Cheers,

Roger the Dense

I'm guessing DL will be more skewed than our supporter base as I doubt anyone under 40 reads/posts on DL - to their loss.

They are more likely to be on a fb or bf fan forum, if on a fan forum at all.

I reckon you’re out by about a decade - it’ll be the under 30s under-represented. I installed this forum software two days before my 22nd birthday and this type of forum was very popular then, so I suspect there are a lot of posters in their mid-late 30s (like me) kicking around.

Under 40 may not age well, no pun intended - my first instinct was to say under 30.  The latter being the age group that grew up in a world with 'social media' like fb etc.

So offended. I’m not that old thanks!

Actually as one of the OG Demonlanders, I reckon you’d be surprised how many of us are, still, in our 30s. This forum started when forums were just at the start of becoming a really big thing and many of the original “testers” for this site were in their early 20s.

In typical millennial behavior I did not read this post first before saying the exact same thing 😂

Yep, +1 over here. I was 15 when I started on DL with the old version.

Jeez I feel like i am carrying  all of D/L on my rounding shoulders Come on you old plicks out there  help lift the average

I think it’s rubbish that the demographics aren’t in 5 year brackets. 41-45 would make me feel heaps better than 41-50 does. This weekend sucks.

☹️

I’m in the 60 plus bracket and only found out and joined Demonland this year. Where have I been???

What interests me was I did not realise how immature my emotional intelligence is when it comes to all things footy- and I’m loving it!  My wife of course, is not surprised at all (at my lack of intelligence), she thinks I need to get a hobby!

Suprised there was not more in the 51-60 category.
Maybe they are still asleep..

For me, there are two surprising facts the data reveals so far:

  • only three percent of 'Landers admit to being under 20 years of age, and
  • WCW hasn't declared her age publicly.

Top line analysis:

  1. Given the nature of some of some the discussions, I would have thought people aged 12 would make up about 50 percent of 'Landers, and
  2. WCW is way too self-effacing.

Love yous all, QD.

One's hobby soon enough becomes 'Land.

Just on only 10% being under the age of 30 is a damning statistic.  How this compares with the age demographics of our actual membership would be interesting but the club would know

But if you put 100 demonlanders in a large room right now only about 10 of them would be aged 30 or under.  It'd be an old crowd

Not surprised but if you are looking for a loud supporter group, a club made up of primarily over 40's (60%+) aren't going to be the raucous types (as a general rule)

Most oldies don't do noise and aren't very loud themselves either ... they might be 'keep off the lawn types' but loud?  I don't think so

If a noisy crowd is needed then we need 10's of thousands of young supporters.  And that can only happen if we have sustained success

Must we tell the absolute truth?

I get so much value out of Demonland. Until today I had thought all truths, by definition, must be absolute.  But apparently not. There's all sorts of truths like this in Wikipedia, or this or even this.

Seems to me WCW, you can state you are whatever age you want and you'll be able to find a way to claim it's the truth.

Another late 30s here, our age bracket loves/loved a forum, spent far too many hours on the Big Day Out Forum back in the day.

In that case, I’m 29 years old. 😁

We've got some young supporters but they're on other sites like BigFooty, Facebook and AFL Reddit.

I know we've got young supporters but how many?

And how many in comparison to the other Victorian clubs?  Also, how many in proportion to our supporters aged over 40?

My guess is that our age demographics  are probably different to a lot of the other clubs

I've got a mate who works in sales (wholesale building supplies) ... he has hundreds of clients and the topic of conversation (apart from the business side of things) centres around footy

He reckons there are only a handful of Demon supporters where as the other 250-300 all support the Blues, Hawks, Pies, Bombers & Tigers

Our years in the wilderness has cost us in terms of having a younger supporter base ... especially so when we were absolute crud

The remedy is to stay in contention for at least 5-7 years.  Whatever window we're in needs to be extended and maintained indefinitely

I also reckon we convert a lot of our older supporters into members.  $250 is not a lot for the afluent (if afluency is a factor)  Doesn't necessarily mean that they are going to attend games though

Just my take as I could be wrong on a few fronts, LE

Just 40% aged over 50 doesn't look representative of the posters on DL.  I'm basing that on the number of posters who talk lovingly about grandchildren, recall our 50's and 60's glory years, anecdotes of players and games of the 70's etc

Maybe there are a lot of older posters who haven't participated yet.   Or 'younger' DL members with accounts that don't post regularly and have participated.

Just on 200 responses now.  I wonder if that sample size is large enough to be meaningful.

It does confirm my suspicion that we don't have a lot of young (under 30) posters here.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
