Its the loss we had to have, we will be fine. But I fear Weed may never play for the MFC for a long time.

I also am a Weid fan, and love what he can bring but to be honest, his game tonight was indefensible. Just so physically weak and lacked effort. I don't remember him actually leading more than once when he took  that great mark. Actually for many of the contests he might as well have not been there. TMac back in hopefully - if not - I would prefer  JVR to be given a go.

And BBB looked way out of sorts. Again, physically weak and unable to handle the physical hustle-and-bustle of the Freo defenders. But he has a LOT of credits in the bank so one bad game is no means for being dropped.

One thought I had today was that these guys have nothing on Cam Pedersen in terms of physicality.

Long live Pedo.

I’d just like to apologise to the club, players, sponsors and supporters. Without fail when it’s my birthday we get beaten. I shouldn’t have attended, as this was always going to happen.

In all seriousness Weed is mentally shot. I feel for him but he gave up on contests tonight, and knew he was going to get beaten. I think he’s a great bloke, but he doesn’t have the mental determination for elite sport.

Our stoppage and clearance work was really, really poor. I know there’s a lot of talk about Yze, but I didn’t see anything shift or change in the game that suggested we tried much - and we got absolutely slaughtered. Happy to be proven wrong.

In general we just didn’t show any spirit after half time. As a fan I was disappointed in that. Kept waiting for it and it didn’t come.

Not the end of the world, just a chance to learn and reevaluate.

Surprised (but not really) that Hunt and Rivers are copping the criticism when they’re the ones so often chasing 2 opponents because Gus Brayshaw is playing Russian roulette all game. He looked a million bucks in the 2nd quarter when we were well on top, as soon as Freo got any ascendancy he was caught out time and time again miles from his opponent

Some random comments in no order

Fremantle were very good. They strangled us.

Jackson. has a lot to learn in the way of ruck craft. Thought he was shown up last week by the North combo & today he was horrible. Think we all, me included, forget how young he is.

Key forwards. Weid & Brown were both horrible but Brown has the runs on the board. Weid does not impose himself on the contest and after today I officially say he won’t make it.

Missing three key players across three lines cooked us (Tmac, Langdon, May). Langdon is just as important as May.

Rivers & Bowey both made inexperienced errors - another reminder that really, they’re just starting out.

not defending Dunstan game, it’s wasn’t good, but I’m amazed at the ppl who are shocked at his disposal.  We all knew it was trash when we recruited him.

don’t expect we’ll ever see Trac play a game that bad ever again

saw Clarry fumble several times  when that happens you know you’re cooked

some time soon we will have our best 22 - 25 in place

That almost never happens. Sad to say, but injuries, or games missed through injury, are objectively the biggest factor in games won, and they are random and fluid throughout the season. We may get close to a fully fit list, like last year, or we may get a horror run with injuries from here. For example,  Gawn, Oliver and Petracca could all get 6-8 week injuries in the same game. Unlikely of course, but that would end us for 2022. There’s no way to know what’s around the corner, but one thing’s for sure - it WILL be the key determinant of our success or otherwise, as for all clubs.

So in the third when it mattered we lost eight clearances in a row. OK, Gawn was forward (probably injured) but WTF was happening in there? It is hard for the defence to compete one-on-one when we are giving up clearances. After four losses in a row we should have swapped it around. Thrown Kozzie in there or give Dunstan a go. Jackson's form is a big concern.

A terrible day from start to finish.
Don’t want to panic but last year we didn’t lose to a single top 8 side. This year we’ve only played 2 really good sides and Freo has not just beat us, they smashed us.

So disappointed in so many of our players. Trac was embarrassingly poor. If he’s injured to the point where he can’t chase he needs to have time off. Brown and Weideman a disaster today. Backline had a complete meltdown without May. Smashed in the air. Smashed at ground level. Really bad day.

Jaded, we lost to the Western Bulldogs and GWS last season whom were both top 8 sides.

ANB...  love the effort he brings in defending/pressure, but how often does he miss a goal he should kick, how often does he choose the wrong option, how often does he try to be the unselfish guy and f__k it up.  Somebody has to get in his ear and get him to be absolutely ruthless.  He annoys me more than the Weid.

Was he the one who wasted a chance early in the 4th? I remember a player kicked with clear path to goal and instead tried to give Trac the mark, of course in the end we got neither.🤮

Melksham: Got gifted straight to 200 games. Now see ya mate. Stoked that's the last time we'll ever see him in a Melbourne jumper.

Been holding that in for a while, huh.
You probably don’t mind a loss since it’s your opportunity to really lay the boots in. You sincerely believe Goody and co. are gonna gift any player a game for any reason???
Even I know that’s rubbish.

You’re absolutely right. Apparently anything  I don’t agree with or question is a case of it going over my head. 😀

For weeks we have dump kicked into f50 and teams have waltzed it out, but our defence held strong.
With May down that didn’t occur.
Our game plan out of defence requires wingers pushing hard, with langers out and Gus at half back we had nothing.

Trac is injured, no doubt, so either rest him or he needs to play more forward and actually kick goals, he has the major yips.
Gawn doesn’t look Right, Jackson is losing money each game he plays, Bowey fumbled, Rivs hasn’t looked decent nearly all year.
Melksham should retire.
Brown, fritta  and Weid/Tmac will never flourish with long dump kicks. Harmes has been missed. We rely on a good rotation of pressure forwards, Bedford and Melksham do not give that.

Our defence and ability to lock the ball in our f/50 has glossed over this in large part. We generally get a lot of entries so it’s inevitable that we’ll score when we can pull it off, in a game like today, we need to fix this issue otherwise we can’t score enough.

I’d guess that we have one of the lower conversion rates per inside 50 of a premiership team for the last 30 years.

It’s a problem that hasn’t ever been addressed that much as we’ve dominated in other parts of the ground to compensate.

Too many absentees;  too many down on form;  and too many passengers today.  It was inevitable that the dam wall would break under those circumstances!

I’m more than happy to forgive and forget, but I expect some changes next week.

A few of the longer term ‘down on form’ group might find themselves at Casey sooner rather than later.  I really look forward to the Casey game tomorrow, which presents as an ideal opportunity for a few to promote their claims.

We are now the hunted and today showed we need to be better to stay ahead of the pack. I would like to think we will learn more from a loss than we have off late from scratchy wins. I need to remind everyone that it is the best team in September that wins a flag and like last year best to peak at the end of the season.Picket, Jackson, Jordon, Sparrow, Rivers and Bedford are only 3 seasons max into their careers and so far have exceeded expectations. The season is only half way.

We played an ok first half and was able to keep Freo to only 2 goals.
We had a really good patch and kicked a few goals.
We lost our most important player to our structure and throughout the game quite a few players looked no where near 100% fit.
In the second half Freo's elite kicking chopped us up.
We kicked 1.6 in the second half.
Some really perplexing positioning choices, which shows we were short and unbalanced on the ground personal wise which Freo exploited.

I've never been this non-bothered by a loss ever in my life though.

Petracca "woke up crook" - ok, that what it looked like

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
