Whilst day to day life might become easier they’d be a lot of scrutiny on his move. It might just be easier to play out his last two years at Richmond then see where he’s at after that.

I’m also not convinced the Swans would sign right up for his salary. That might require a bit of give and take from all 3 parties to make it work.

I understand players wanting out of the Victorian fishbowl, i just wish they would choose a team like Gold Coast. Tthat way we can support their move but not worry about a new threat to our reign....  😄

Sydney has already had too many breaks.

GO THE COASTERS !!! ( as long as you stay out of the 8)

The Suns will have their time in the sun.

You throw a thousand darts at a board, eventually you'll hit a target.

Suns will eventually feature in the September sunshine.

Worth adding to the discussion how gracious Hardwick has been in his comments. It might be self-serving (ie, Hardwick knows Richmond has to re-build and that Martin leaving might help that process), but Hardwick is also correct in that Martin owes Richmond nothing and conversely, Richmond has to thank Martin for being the key to winning three premierships.

And I think he is correct his trade value will never be high.

Interesting thought OD... I think they'll do okay pick wise but of course it could just be a salary dump which allows the Tiges to target a young star

I would be surprised if either GWS or Syd pick up a $1.0m+ tab and give Rich some high draft picks.  Suspect it will be one or the other or watering down of both.

Hardwick is so transparent.  I don't doubt his sincerity in supporting Dusty's move but it is a clear ploy to max a trade.  .

How cynical but it's hard to argue otherwise.

I see it also as softening up the fan base for what would have been a controversial departure.

Playing it smart.. exactly the opposite to Essendon and Daniher

He is just saying what every other coach would think and keep it to themselves. Sydney did the Big deal with buddy that most people thought was ridiculous me included , while it has not netted them a flag they have not slid down the ladder as a result. Buddy’s deal finishes this year so they can use some of  that on dusty. Whoever Dusty maybe prepared to accept a bit less than he gets at Richmond if he wants out of Melbourne badly.

Collecting medals doesn’t equate to greatness. Carey or Buddy have never won a Brownlow so what does that say?

Martin will go down as one of the most influential finals players ever. But over a career there are many ahead of him. Finals are important but not everything

If you don't make the finals your season is a bust. Finals are everything and he has been a big game player for a long time.

Martin is no doubt the GOAT for big game matches.

But GOAT of all time? Please. Surely Ablett Jnr would get a look in with 2x premierships, 2x Brownlow, 3x AFL Coaches Association player of the year, 5x AFL Players Association player of the year,  8x All Australian, 4x club leading goal kicker^, 6x club B&F*, 357 games… and carried a whole team on his back for 6 years!

If Swans back ended Dusty’s contract, could definitely see them in premiership contention with Buddy, Dusty and Heeney up forward and their pretty strong midfield.

Meanwhile, with the oldest average age list in the AFL (27.1?) we wouldn’t be hearing from Richmond for a while.

Not even the best in his own family.

(Seriously, Ablett Jr was magnificent, but his father was better. Odder, but better.)

no one seems to know where the suggestion that martin might go to sydney comes from

strange times

Wasn't it Hardwick who put it out there a few days ago that Dusty might want to live in Sydney but didn't say which team.

At 30+ years he is too young for the Cats.

He was ok living in Melb for 10+ years but now the Tigers are facing a re build he wants to go.

Perhaps he is just trying to do the right thing by his club.

Sydney are a club that simply has to have a marque player and rather than develop their own (Heeney is pretty close imo)  they insist of that player coming in from outside

Plugger
Buddy
potentially Martin

There is a definite trend here

No doubt Dusty is one of the best big game players I've seen.  At the same time, I think the Richmond game plan has allowed him to do this - he's allowed to roam forward without needing to worry about a man or team defence etc as his teammates have learnt to cover for him.  Will be interesting to see whether a Sydney based team would be able to do the same.

I haven't seen a better player in 50 years.

Well, the VFA was formed in 1877, the VFL in 1897, even assuming the potential best players have come from those comps plus the AFL, that's 145 years, so I don't know how anyone can say Dusty is the GOAT. Very difficult to comparre players from different eras and I'm not 150 years old.

Consistency! He barely played a bad game for 5 years, dominated in big games and was the main reason a club won 3 Premierships. Take him ahead of all those you mentioned

I assume because you're on this site you're a Melbourne fan. Very impressed you wastched 120 Richmond games over 5 years so you can say with authority that be barely played a bad game.

I agree. The Swans I assume are going to have one first round draft pick this year (around 13 or 14) so don't know how they're going to do a trade. Richmond would want players as well. Sydney have some great young players but IMO would be mad to give up too much for Dusty given he turns 32 June next year. Having said that, Sydney are at least in the Premiership window whereas GWS are a couple of years further away at best.

The other thing of course is that Martin will be a marquee player at Sydney or GWS. He's not going to be able to get away with doing no media in Sydney as he does in Melbourne.

Hardwick has been gracious in his comments but there's no might about them being self-serving. Dusty has made it clear he wants to move to Sydney and if he's on $1.4m a year as  reported (or close to that), then his departure would be a boon for Richmond (assuming a Premiership in 2023 or 2024 is unlikely should he stay). That's a lot of money freed up for future top-liners plus expected trades for players/draft. The best way of maximising your return is by being upfront you're prepared to trade. The alternative is he stays at Richmond where he would prefer not to be. Rest assured, Richmond aren't going to be a pushover when in comes to actual trade negotiations.

Has he? At least, has he made clear he wants to play for a Sydney-based team?

Well, I'm assuming Hardwick hasn't just come out and made his statement because there's nothing to the rumours. And I guess it's hard to play for a team based somewhere else and live in Sydney. Maybe Dusty could just retire from the AFL and move to Sydney (he probably doesn't need the money).

I assume he's made plenty of money as a footballer, but would it be enough to live off from hereon? He's unlikely to have significant earnings capability once he's retired. He almost certainly won't work in the media or go on the public speaking circuit (although he'll receive plenty of offers) and I'm not sure he has the personality to be or any interest in coaching.

There is something wrong with me LDV. On first read, I thought your first sentence said “… but would it be enough to live off from heroin?”, and I was going to agree with you!
Then I reread the sentence.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
