At Casey, T Mac played the role that we need. He impacted contests, applied pressure and hit the scoreboard. Weid ticked one box.

Weid plays next week, but his position in the team isn't assured.

The pregame was amazing last night. I love that the teams sneak on to the crowd in the cover of darkness. It was all so well done. Great acoustics at the G too.

It has become a special night, it’s the kids’ favourite event at the footy these days and they were fortunate enough to soak it all in from up close last night.

The beauty is within the predictability…  so far this year we’ve had

10,3,9,2,7 and 21 more scoring shots in each round, not only that, it’s where the opposition have their shots from typically.

I get canned for it, but bystanding is his main fault - he is brilliantly fed by our forward thrusts but does not lead to better opportunities often enough. He is a beautiful kick for goal but poor on clean possessions that he could win far more frequently to establish a positive trademark.

Tomlinson more realistic than Turner, but different player to Smith and Turner. Interceptors versus lockdown. But yeah, I'm being slightly facetious. Against a top 8 or top 4 team we cannot have Smith playing in that back 6.

So because I was curious and because I feel us going 6-0 after our first premiership should be recognised even more this is how the last 5 premiers have gone in their first 6 rounds:

Dogs: 4-2

Rich: 5-1

West Coast: 3-3

Rich: 3-2 & 1 draw

Rich: 3-3

There were plenty of question marks on whether we might have a premiership hangover, but honestly it looks like a continuation of last season. The fact it was only 22 points in the end will mean the domination we had for practically the entire game will get lost. The last team to go 6-0 to start their season after a premiership was the Hawks premiers of 2013. They ended up losing in round 8.

Brown was being double teamed, scragged all night, and still managed to get to impact lots of contests

Weid was regularly behind and not quite there, really needs to hit more contests hard and smash packs. Then a few more marks are likely to stick

I was thinking just that last night - if eg Weed and Brown lead to opposite pockets and Fritter stayed home, in rotations and combinations of this, then surely defenders could not double team more than one of them.   

Maybe Goody is keeping this up his sleeve for September?

Make no mistake, we thrashed them in all ways but on the scoreboard.

Richmond tried to stop our two key scoring avenues by flooding back and trying to avoid half back intercepts from which we do fast rebounds.  They could hardly take a forward half mark and had little time in forward half after half time.  They had a couple of goals from Joel Smith blunders (not staying accountable on Riewoldt is the biggest one), and a few fast breaks, but just could not break us down.

We seemed to be about 5% off skill wise all over the park in the first half, and maybe some of this was tiger pressure, but I think it was just us. We have such high expectations of the team and the players that the ‘old ways’ now look bad - and they were.  We were too sloppy by hand and foot early.

Kicking for goal was atrocious.  Too many easy shots missed, kicks taken as poor options, not lowering the eyes.  Vlaustin know we were going to bomb it to the fat side pocket and simply sat there are had a feast.  Uncontested intercept after uncontested intercept.

ANB had a stinker - his early disposal and goal kicking were well below par.  Doggo had a quiet one. Kozzie did well at defensive things but did not get the rewards in attack.  Played well as a link on the Lingers wing at times.

Tigers had no answer.  They tried to break us down rather than play their system, and it showed.  Not one for the replay collection, but bank the four points and move on.  Go dees.

Gee the umps were poor again last night. At least not so much with the dissent issue.

But most whistles were met with held breath as to which way it was going.

The prior opportunity seems to be arbitrary at best now.

I thought Tigers were given quite a few bad calls and we experienced what the dogs get on a regular basis. ......bias.

We were clearly the superior team on the night but just didn't kick straight - which would be an issue if that sort of thing happened all the time

And I don't believe it's happened for quite a while either (where it has been costly) The last time that springs to mind where it did cost us a win was late in the season in 2018 against Sydney

You'd hate for it to happen in a final but again, unless the problem is a frequent one, we should be able to reset the next week

Just checked and we kicked 10.18 in that loss against Sydney in round 21, 2018 then followed up with 16.12 at the Eagles (Win) and then 15.12 vs GWS (Win)  And as we all know, we then played finals where we kicked 10.15 (hmmmm) to 6.10 against the Cats then 16.8 to 10.11 against the Hawks

There may well have been other instances since but none stand out like the Sydney game (which could have, but didn't cost us a finals spot that year) And that's 3 and a half years ago anyway

 

Footnote: I know a few Tiger mates who were at the ground and they never thought they were a chance after quarter time .... very impressed with our relentless style and our all-over defence (not just the backline)  Fitness and running ability was commented on as well as 2nd & 3rd efforts

Just listened to Hardwick's Press Conference. There was no wingeing, just constructive analysis of the difficulties in playing against us at the moment. Long may it continue, because it has been a fair while coming.

I really do like the way Brayshaw Langdon and increasingly Bowey float around the Halfback line . Sets us up beautifully.

It’s a winning formula that other clubs have not come to terms with. Every club these days tries to flood then pick or scramble their way out of defence to where we already have them covered. Weight of entries eventually grind them down.

Then some reporter asked 3 more questions somewhat in awe pf Weid and Goodwin gave similar agreeing but dead bat type responses. The third question a few mins later, when the reporter drew attention back to Weid was just uncomfortable...
