I made a $150 bet with a mate that Melb would finish higher than Essendon on the ladder this year. Thought it was a safe bet at the time.

Did the same thing, Richmond and Essendon for 2 slabs each...

You weren't alone in that opinion Gouga......

I made a very similar bet with my brother, who is a Bomber supporter and definite black sheep of the family :o !!!

There is quite a lot of beer on the line, with a monetary bonus for the winner when the two teams play each other.

Same deal for me. Beers on the line with a Essendon supporter. I'll just have to make sure that I get comfortable at his place until I get half of them back!!!

TJ is ok and seems set to play this weekend as reported in the Age.

I'll believe it when I see it reported at mfc.com or on the footy show. The Age is often behind on these sorts of things.

They've updated that website:

Travis Johnstone hand injury Rnd 3 Rnd 4

Has been cleared of a fractured hand but may be in doubt for this week.

I made a $100 bet with Hawks mate that we'd finish higher. I'm still confident.

MFC website says TJ has been cleared of a broken hand and is expected to play Sunday.

Sylvia (thigh) will be tested and could play his first game of the year for the seniors.

Suddenly things could be looking a little rosier.

Freo have M Johnson, Farmer, Peake, Schammer certainly out while Josh Carr and Headland are fronting the tribunal. Meanwhile Justin Longmuir is playing injured and Antoni Grover is a question mark as well.

Surely we'll be more competitive this week than Geelong.

it does beg the question.

if Trav has an injury to his hand...and he must otherwise why the scan etc... and others have noticed his concerns on play day. then are we ( well MFC ) risking exasperating this by playing him. is this an act of a prudent list mamangement ? or does it smack of desperation ? or is he suddently "all better" ?

For his own sake...id only want a reasoanbly fit TJ to play... no point making a bad situation worse.

i have a feeling he wont play, how often do we hear " he will play" but doesnt becuase the club is trying to keep the opposition guessing

I wonder if we could come to the stage where we release some players from training and playing for the full year in order to completely recover.

You then tell younger players, right, you have 10, 15 or 18 rounds to learn the game and have a crack.

Or you line up Ooze, Bizzell, Holland, Wheatley, Ward, McDonald etal and say, right, its your last year, you are in for the season, give it everything you have.

Down sides:

Losing games

Over exposing young bodies and minds to rigours of senior football before they are ready

Damage player and team confidence

Bludging (players who know they are safe "coast")

Upsides:

Young players have the confidence to make mistakes, they learn from bad games

We get to see who has "it"rather than "potential"

Players with long term injuries get completely rested.

Brent Moloney- Looks to either have suffered a strain or has had a recurrence of the soreness he experienced last season. Very unlikely to play this week.

Apropos and urrgh......

Moloney adds to Demons' wounded

By Greg Denham

April 18, 2007

AN epidemic of injuries is threatening to derail a winless Melbourne's season less than a month in.

The Demons' woes have deepened further with midfield player Brent Moloney likely to be sidelined for some time after aggravating his osteitis pubis.

Melbourne mid-fielder Travis Johnstone has been given the all clear to play on Sunday after undergoing precautionary on his wrist.

General Manager of Football Operations Chris Fagan said “He went in for an x-ray on the bottom of his hand and was given the ok. We expect him to line-up against Fremantle on Sunday”.

In other injury news for the Demons, Colin Sylvia will undergo a fitness test and is considered a chance to play his first game for 2007.

Lets wait for some sort of official confirmation before we all go slash our wrists.

If proven to be correct, I'll be first in line.

:D confirmed that, Russell Robertsonhas a small crack

Moloney out is a bad loss. He is just so passionate and has an impact out there even if he doesn't rake up 30 touches every week. Has been one of our best all year, even battling injury and fitness. Under-rated footballer IMO. With him, Brock, Sylvia, Pickett all out, TJ in average form and under injury cloud, Green not performing well in the midfield, Bruce not playing in the midfield, Junior having an average season....our midfield is really struggling. I marked it in as our strong point at the start of the year, but it is really being flogged. Has been beaten convincingly every match this year. Jones has been great for someone so young and inexperienced, winning a stack of clearances and making his presence felt. Apart from him, haven't been any other shining lights.

If TJ had been out for 6 weeks like originally suggested, I'd have said finals are gone. God I wish Brock was healed up already!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
