Brad Hardie won his Brownlow in a similar role. Back then you were playing on knackered resting rovers so running off them was no great challenge. A couple of handy types playing permanent forward stitched him up though. I think Brian Wilson kicked 7 or 8 on poor old Brad while Leigh Matthews monstered him for a lazy 11.

Keith Greig may have gone to a half back flank towards the end of his career but won his two Brownlows playing on the wing. Decent player. Probably the second best winger of his era.

I think Tom’s role is to get to as many contests and ensure it doesn’t get marked by the opposition, although I think he was in the bottom rung of players he did provide that element all night. It’s frustrating that he doesn’t even seem to be going for the mark anymore, it’s just about crashing the pack. 

As I said in an earlier post, Weid has to take the opportunity now and make it impossible for him to not be picked. It’s Tom’s position to lose but Weid has to make a statement to force him out.

I reckon that tactic, something they did all last season, was aimed at mitigating against the impact of the humidity and a six day break.

The other part of that comment that was interesting was it in response to a question that framed the margin as a function of being tired.

Goodies answered we weren't fatigued, which is bollocks. They looked totally gassed. But I suspect he said we weren't with an eye to essendon players hearing thst response, or more accurately not wanting  to give them any ammunition by saying yes, they were spent.

So I'd say his comment about us not needing to score was not so much honest, as disingenuous

Some players took heavy knocks (Brayshaw, Petracca, Gawn, Bowey and Rivers) so it is understandable they would slow down, make mistakes or 'looked gassed'.

I can't agree the decision to defend was to conserve energy for next week as it would be more fatiguing to do all the defensive things than to attack.  Tackling, chasing, stoppages and all the 1%  require a fair amount of physicality.  We could have simply slowed the game down, played tempo footy and done less energetic attacking if the goal was to conserve engergy.  And we used only 72 or our allowed 75 interchanges.  Why leave them on the table if some players were 'gassed'? 

If anything, it looked like we were adopting the Burgess principle of 'building physical resilience'.  After all we had played only one game in 6 months and that was 10 days earlier so probably needed the workout.

We will never know the reason Goodwin responded as he did but I'm still of the view that he was fair dinkum and the more likely reason is that the last quarter 'defend' was to test and refine an end of game tactic.  He could have simply said that our 5 pts in the last was inefficiency in front of goal.

Btw, Ess will also be on a 6 day break and it was quite warm here on Saturday afternoon albeit without the high humidity, they did a mountain of running and had injuries to Cox and Merrett.  We knew all that going into our game.  I'm not sure our coaches and fitness folk were too fussed about facing an emotionally and physically battered and bruised team next week.

Fair enough, well have to agree to disagree.

One thing though, playing tempo, slow, controlled football is as you say less taxing than attacking.and trying to score.

For one thing, when going into tempo/control they frequently hold onto the ball and stop after a mark or free, sometimes up to 30 seconds. Everyone gets chance to get their heart rate down

Slowing down rhe heard rate is tge key reason players taking a shot at goal take their full time before taking their shot.

And we did go into tempo, control mode.

On the players being gassed, perhaps you're right and they like goody says they weren't tired.

But jeez when you look at the post match interviews the players all looked completely spent  

And tracc and may both mentioned the heat right at the top.

At times it can help to explain a decision but a lot of the time we have to suffer the running commentary that does nothing to enlighten us. It’s just twaddle. At least tone it down or use their comments selectively to explain a contentious decision. We do not need to hear the umps voices the whole time. They should be seen but not heard (most of the time).

Say hello to our little friend La Niña. She only visits every few years, but when she does she makes her presence felt. And while she’s not as bad as her brother El Niño, she does love her some unseasonably high humidity.

Ernie, in this day and age one would think that we could select the audio. For me that means no commentators just crowd noise. For others turn off the umpires. 

Whilst venting, what is with flashing the lights? It adds nothing and makes me dream of the good old days. The footy is the show, the rest is fugazi.

Agree wholeheartedly MD. 

On the lights, my wife finds it hard to watch the game live because the flashing lights give her a migraine. This is apparently  very common. The light show has got worse ever since it’s inception. Initially it was after goals or when play stopped, but now it’s during play as well. Just like ground commentary and announcements it makes a day or night at the footy less enjoyable and at times intolerable.  It’s become a sound and lights show.

Thank god, we still have a great game that in it pure form is sublime. 

And don’t start me on TV viewing. Some commentators add to the viewing experience but all to often that’s not the case.  Did I mention Dwayne and Gerald ?  They are insufferable. 

All the talk it seems is around dreadful Essendon and Port. And how wonderful C'wood and Hawks are. Nary a mention of the Mighty Demons. We get to fly under the radar for a second week.

Quite true: but the king, the undisputed emperor of insufferability is surely Dermott Brereton! By god does he waffle and over complicate every play. An enjoyment killer in every way!

could not agree more!  it should be used to explain a contention decision and even then they usually don't help. It is mostly yelling/coaching the players and it is louder then the commentators.

I wish you could have crowd noise and nothing else, that would be option I would choose

I don't think we're under the radar, I've heard commentators say several times, that "Melbourne is the side to beat, and no one is looking close..." Dermutt being one on that bandwagon (which makes me kinda ill...).

Agree.

And to boot he keeps crappimg on when the ball is in play.

They missed calling Jackson's goal as it happened coz dermot was blathering away about something.

That said, healy wasn't far behind in the waffle AND incomprehensible stakes - which is weird because he was never that bad i thought.

That was the worst commentary I have ever heard in a footy game - and for me, that is seriously saying something.

I found myself getting angry at all 3 clallers, particularly healy and breteton. It really affected my enjoyment of the game.

Not only did they not actually call the game, they were frequently dead wrong with their comments and analysis.

It was embarrassing
