With news that David Zaharakis will most likely be one of our top up players for 2022 I wonder who else we'll nominate before next Mondays deadline.

I'll take a little stab and say these 3 are most likely our certainties.

David Zaharakis

Matt Buntine (Was training today in the ANB vision)

James Munro

What about Nathan Jones?

I reckon he wouldn't mind playing a few extra games.

I understand he has retired....but...never say never!

Just a quick little heads up, keep an eye out for the name Roan Steele who has recently signed with Casey from Frankston YCW.

Has been training with Melbourne.

What is the Heads up on him Dazzle??

I don't know too much about except that he has genuine X factor and can run all day.

With a bit of exposure to semi professional level he could hopefully follow in the footsteps od Bayley Fritsch.

Jack Lonie and former Giant Sam Reid have been added to Casey's list.

so, so far, that's:

  • matt buntine
  • david zaharakis
  • jack lonie
  • sam reid
  • reece conca (potentially)

?

how many do we have to list by monday?

20

I think we need a back-up ruck or two.

I assume the rest of the back-up players will come from Casey, if there are no more outsider additions?

I think that is a safe assumption. I think that is really good for the alliance. The Casey boys probably aren’t happy about the 3 or 4 ring ins but when that covi-tunity strikes White or a couple others will get a game in the big show.

I like Jack Lonie as a top up player. A known goal kicker who was almost picked up by another side (can’t recall which one) in the off season.

Essendon?

With the additions of Lonie, Zaharakis and Ried we will have a really strong team.

B: Buntine, Turner, D.Smith

HB: Hunt, White, McVee

C: Zaharakis, Dunstan, Howes

HF: Chandler, van Rooyen, Melksham

F: Lonie, Weideman, M.Brown

FOLL: Daw, Reid, Munro

IC: Bedford, Laurie, Rosman, Woewodin

EMERG: Moniz-Wakefield, Baker, Grey

Apart from those routinely playing for Casey like Buntine and maybe Conca the guys playing local footy will probably need time at Casey to get acquainted with the game plan and get their fitness up.

So it’s certainly smart to list a number of former AFL players but I’d hope the first line of reinforcements comes from actual Casey players. This could be a chance to convince good local talent who have been reluctant to join the VFL to give Casey a chance as well.

If we’re down to 28 fit players which is when these guys become eligible either us or us and the entire AFL will be pretty screwed anyway.

So how does it work from a list perspective? Do they now train with us full time and play at Casey every week? Or train and play at Casey until called up for top ups?

they go about their normal life as is and if it gets dire then they'll link up

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • PREGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
