Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Harmes, Sparrow, Jordon, Dunstan, Jackson (yes he counts as a midfielder when playing in the middle) are far superior in every way to Bont, Macrae, Libba, Treloar, Smith, Dunkley, Hunter

And don't forget Salem, Kozzy, Brayshaw and multiple others more than capable of running through the middle if we needed "depth" 

 

That's 11 more than capable midfielders and we apparently lack depth. Please, give it a rest.

I always thought the term maggot was a long part of the afl tradition. An inseparable part of its vernacular like Jezza you beauty.

I won't be taking a good hard look at myself and will continue to use the word because it beats jumping the fence and confronting them.

Of course there are limits but footy is the greatest stress relief for many and if calling someone a maggot when they can't even hear it, helps my mental health, then I am going for it.

I'm sure maggots are not offended if they were called oh umpire.

Flat out wrong to say Smith has no pace. He is one of our fastest (behind Hunt) and his closing speed to spoil etc is one of his strengths. 
He has many weaknesses but it is ridiculous to say he doesn’t have pace.

And that pace is one of the reason i think he has an edge on tomo.

We definitely lost because of 50m penalties. That is not even a question it is rock solid fact. We conceded 8 50's and had 6 goals scored against us directly because of them, since we lost by 5 points I think everyone can do the math in their head. That doesn't mean they were wrong though and focussing on that just distracts from the lessons we can take away from the game.

There was a lot to learn from that outing, but unfortunately it was a bit skewed by the lack of intensity. Our back line was all at sea but it is hard to tell how much was their disorganisation and how much was lack of pressure on the ball carrier. We are likely going to see the occasional game with a makeshift forward or back line or midfield during the year, I was hoping they might run an experiment like this in preseason to get a look at what we need to focus on at training to reduce the impact if we get hit with COVID during the season. I think there is plenty there to look at.

In other news, Gawn needs to set a better example with the umpires. As a leader he needs to get his face and body language under control. The whole team seems to have taken his lead in having a whinge every time there is a call against us. I used to get quite a chuckle out of watching his face when he'd get a ruck infringement called against him. That is no longer the case, getting lippy or remonstrating against a free has a real possibility of losing us games this year. We also are going to need to embed the idea of getting the ball straight back. Hopefully we have time to drill that and reduce the practice in our players.

Getting a little fraught in here. We've all forgotten what losing was like!

All things told it's not a bad thing - touched up in the middle, taught some umpiring lessons, got miles in the legs, no injuries, exposed some depth, and still only had a narrow loss. I'm glad we didn't pinch it (although Carlton fan's devastation would have made my week - they celebrated this win hard).

We were never going to just Romp to a 2nd flag. We have a good shot but it's going to be a hard journey and we'll need luck as we had last year. Let's see how it folds out. We have a strong team, can expect close to a win every week - that's a great thing and it should be a fun year of going to the footy.

yes he is undersold, esp.in comparison with Smith. Tommo is more tructworthy than Smith re; footy nous.  Doesn't fly against team mates, better disposal.  Seems for intuitive as a player.

Must come in for Petty. Smith scares me in defence.

Not sure what it explains. I think all it probably explains is that some people either have too much money to waste or too little intelligence to use it properly (or both). Gambling on a practice match I would have thought might be a little brave.

Firstly, I apologise for starting this whole exchange. I accept disappointingly I'm probably in a minority of one on this given no-one else has come out in support and a number of you have actually pushed back (I must have touched a sore point). I already acknowledged that the fans who still use the term maggots to describe umpires are highly unlikely to take a good hard look at themselves but thanks for confirming it in your case.

I totally get the emotion involved in watching a game of footy. I got involved in a meaningless and fairly childish exchange with a Carlton supporter last year. I cooled down a little and actually apologised to him for overreacting and he apologised back (a high point for both of us that day). Playing Brisbane in Sydney last year I got involved again in a meaningless exchange with a group of Brisbane supporters who'd obviously had a few beers pre-game. I decided that I was about to lose it so changed seats at half time. before it got out of control (I was vastly outnumbered). I'm also fairly notorious for loudly expressing my view on umpiring decisions I don't agree with.

I also agree it's better to call an umpire a maggot rather than jump the fence or affect your mental health by not being able to say it. A bit sad that that's what it comes down to but if that's the way it is... I also appreciate you making just that little bit of extra effort under duress to make sure you're not too close to the action or shouting too loudly to make sure the umpires don't hear it. I'm also sure all those around you are sitting there silently thinking how witty you are and how they love the use of your colourful if dated vocabulary. Even if they find it offensive (highly unlikely I know as everyone loves a bit of verbal abuse), that's not important. It's much more important that you can feel free to fully express yourself.

Looks to me like we have had a good preseason.

We have no long-term injuries, zero injuries to key players and we look fit (9 out of 11 last goals).

The players who will miss against the Dogs (Petty and Rivers) are replaceable.

We have been given a lesson to shut our traps and give the ball back faster.

The Blues were pretty impressive IMO. McGovern looked excellent down back. Kennedy played well. Cripps is a star again.

Viney looks like he could do with another run but it's a long year and we need to be careful not to over do him.

Lever started poorly but got better. Fritsch a similar story.

They (JVand Fritta) did not play last week Give them some slack.
