This is just completely untrue. Especially with Luke Jackson probably leaving we will likely match any offer that comes for him. This is about role, and I see brayshaws point. I think if he leaves he will be an elite mid at another club

    I personally don't think we'll match the offer BTW. We're not known to play hard ball with deals and I think we prefer just to get deals done and move onto the next.

    I can’t see any way we wouldn’t match the offer dazzle. The compensation pick would very likely be around pick 20. Matching and forcing a trade would be the only way to get a reasonable return. Granted if he nominates Fremantle it’ll be incredibly challenging for them to satisfy a trade for both Jackson and brayshaw without giving up their young core

    Every time I get pessimistic about Jackson and Brayshaw leaving, I always remember we've signed Petracca and Oliver for a decade and I instantly feel better.

    The only way I can see us not matching is if the price tag is so outside of what we would want to pay him that if a trade falls through we would be stuck with a contract for Brayshaw that upsets our pay structure. Also, we might just say - “you want to go? Ok, thanks for your service - see you at the reunion.”

    On top of trying to deal a separate and more complex deal in Jackson, I just think the club will mutually accept the compensation pick and move on quickly to get this Jackson deal. 

    History will tell you that clubs rarely match bids on free agents that leave.

    If we win the premiership it will be pick 19 assuming the AFL deem the comp pick to be a first round pick.

    Whatever pick we get will drop 2-3 spots after a North pp and F/S pick(s). 

    What pick do you think we get for Gus in a trade, freo aside?

    I actually think his trade value is equivalent to the compensation pick. However, If we are in the market for a FA, then we'd lose that compensation pick.

    Gus is doing what he is well entitled to do and taking his time on the biggest contract of his career/life. Just like Viney and others he is taking time to think everything through and even considering if a move would be good for him.

    He will stay, he is playing the best footy of his career. He loves Goody and all his best mates, premiership mates are here

    No chance he will leave

    I doubt we’d be in the market for a FA. The free agency market tends to get overvalued. We can’t really afford to pay overs.

    I agree about Gus' trade value which is why I think we would not match. 

    Yes, we would lose a comp pick for an inbound FA but are there any we would be looking at/want?  De Goey aside?  Mc Stay looks bound for Coll.

    Gus is in his prime at 26 years old. He's shown he can be a great mid (2018), good wingman (2021), and All Australian level halfback (2022). His versatility and leadership make him a valuable commodity.

    I'd rate him around the pick 10-12 mark. That's better than what we'd get as compo, but not drastically so. I don't believe Gus will leave, but if he does then end of first round compo is likely what we'd settle for. I'm someone that believes picks are overrated though and would rather a proven good player than speculative great one, so in my eyes we lose either way if Gus leaves.

    I'm of the same thinking, in that we may take the afl comp pick, less than he is worth, to get another deal we want done over the line or get it done early.

    We took less than we wanted for Watts but got the pick for Fritsch.  Ditto we converted Hogan for May.  Effectively Brown for Preuss etc.

    Above all we are pragmatic when it comes to trades rather try and extract max value on each trade.

    Unfortunate Goody isn't someone willing to throw the magnets around and that's been evident when we've had the losses. Moments where I thought we could have mixed things up in the midfield by getting Gus in there when we've been smashed in clearances, but nope we stick with the same predictable set up which includes throwing Sparrow in there (who's been bloody average this year).

     

    Yup. Predictably is good but when a key cog isn’t working you love other cogs around.

    I think you could get a stronger first round selection than 20 odd. I agree with dazzle this isn’t done but I think we are in the window and letting an all Australian calibre player walk out of the club for less than he’s worth would be regrettable. 
     

    his value is arguably closer to a top 10 pick and just because clubs don’t match typically doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Unless the offer is enormous, I’d match and put it back on the team to get a deal done.

    Brayshaw is a restricted free agent, Why cant we be the first team to use the rule and match any offer he gets and he has to stay with us. What's even the point of restricted free agency?

    We wouldn't be the first team. GWS matched Geelong's offer for Cameron, and a trade was negotiated. If we match any Gus offer, then Gus is still out of contract, and has the right to seek a trade. The system is ridiculous in that way.

    It’s not ridiculous. The NBA calls this a ‘sign and trade’ and they have are very mature when it comes to movement of players.

    The NBA is far from mature when it comes to player movements. The star players and the big franchises have too much power. Look at the Kevin Durant situation.

    Of course they are but the specific allowance for ‘sign and trades’ are good for smaller clubs to get *something* for this player that is leaving.

    I have been told that until Jackson makes a decision than they have no more money to up their offer to Gus.  Don’t forget Gus is on an incredibly high contract that he signed in the year he came 3rd in the Brownlow.

    It would be handy if LJ can hurry up and make a call then.

    We all know you're heading home mate, just confirm it with everyone and move on.

    Gus is such an important signing IMO.

    He signed that deal in July, well before his (very unexpected) 3rd placing in the Brownlow (and in the same year he was dropped for the first few games).

    He's on the record as saying he 'wished' he earned close to the 600k per year that was rumoured in the media.

    I don't agree his current contract would be "incredibly high".

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
