    Let's hope some b**stard other club doesn't select him at 56 to thwart us! It's estimated he'll go somewhere between 45 & 60 and a pick below 73 isn't worth any points so we'd have to go into deficit to get him.

    The question is if another Club selects Kynan at say from 45 to 60 is the 5th round pick of any use in matching that bid because there are no points attached to it (or do we just throw it away or try to trade it)? Or do we need to trade up or down to get a pick around 50 to get enough points after the 20% discount to match the bid. Are you saying the latter? Or do we go into points deficit for 2024?

    I would think that maybe there will be some points coming back through late round draft picks/ compensation for Jordan, Tomlinson, Harmes trades or others we don't know about yet, anyone of those will give us points for a young Doggy Brown. I know Jordan is a UFA, but three clubs are pursuing him and will want to trade prior to the draft/pre season draft etc.

    I agree with you re late round drafts picks & compensation. In any case the Club might be of the view that he's not worth more than Pick 57 (even discounted by 20%) so won't try to match with points if he goes above that.

    I think your last point is incorrect. Clubs don't need to trade for JJ as he's a UFA. He just walks. Maybe he could be traded if the other club has an unwanted lower round pick they aren't going to use, but in all likelihood wouldn't it be better for the other club to hold on to their picks and just let the AFL compenation pick work it's magic? Jayden Hunt was a UFA last year and wasn't traded to West Coast. Instead we got a compensation pick (52).

    Thwart us how? I reckon there's a very slim chance we'd be targeting another player with our next pick after 56. How many times has JT done that? Worst case we have to use it and can't trade it into 2024 4th round and the bid rules may even allow that. I'll sleep soundly.

    Did you read earlier posts? Pick 56 and above we apparently have to match the bid using ponts and our 5th round pick has no points attached to it. 57 and below we can use our last pick in the draft to get him without worrying about poinrs (so our current 89 would be fine). I guess if we are worried he's going to go earlier we do a pick swap to move up from 89.

    On that package, I wouldn't expect him to instantly break into AFL level but he could develop into a very handy player with some non-boring attributes!

    As you have pointed out, we're going to have picks ahead of 89 from some combination of Jordon, Harmes, Tomlinson and Laurie leaving. Picks with points attached.  And as you intimate, there's 2024 picks available for trade too. There'll be heaps of flexibility if there's a bid at 56.

    The bigger concern than having suitable picks for Kynan, is the number of available list spots. Perhaps Jordon, Harmes and Tomlinson leave, but the club is just as likely to recontract Hibberd and Melksham, and then we're back where we started.

    If those three leave then there are three available spots - we're not "back where we started" even if we do recontract Hibberd and Melksham because they're already on the list.  Dunstan is out of contract and likely to be delisted too, Laurie is reported to possibly be on the move.  We'll have enough spots.

    Melbourne father-son prospect Kynan Brown boosted his standing in this year’s draft pool with some strong performances for Vic Metro across the under-18 national championships.

    The Oakleigh Chargers co-captain played predominantly through the midfield and averaged 22.8 disposals, 4.5 clearances, 4.8 tackles and 6.5 score involvements from his four matches.

    “He was really consistent and I think his contest work really stood up through each of the games,” Vic Metro coach Rob Harding said of Brown.

    “Even when we were challenged by some of the stronger midfields in the nationals, he stood up really well through those games.

    “Melbourne has been working with him over the past couple of years and they would have been really excited by what they saw over the past few weeks.”

    Brown – who is the son of former Melbourne defender Nathan Brown – has also spent time across half-forward with the Chargers in the Coates Talent League this year.

    Along with his strong contest work, the left-footer also brings quick hands, sharp vision and strong creativity in his game.

    Definitely not a bad thing. He will feel right at home playing with Oli Sestan too. Neither Brett Lovett or Allan Jakovich had a high jumpers body but they went ok

    he's listed as 5'11" (181cm) but looks much shorter

    with so many talls around now it can be deceptive. watching games, 6 footers look like midgets until you stand next to them ... lol

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
