Saturday Morning on Demonland (4)

The Melbourne Football Club has designated December 5 as the most likely date for its celebration of the 2021 Premiership at our Home and The Home of Football - the MCG.

Melbourne chief executive Gary Pert announced:

"This event is incredibly important to us, as it is the first chance our players, coaches and the wider club will have to thank our supporters for their amazing support and loyalty."

The Grand Final team and the remainder of the playing list, coach Simon Goodwin, the coaches and football staff and the premiership cup will all be there but what would you like to see on the day?

I would like to see some structure on the day rather than people randomly walking around the hallowed arena for hours. A specific event with a program including vision of season highlights, presentation of the players, speeches (but kept to a limit), special presentations to retiring players - especially Nathan Jones and Neville Jetta and tributes to Demon greats who passed away and missed our first premiership in 57 years.

I have also suggested elsewhere that thought could be given to combining the evening with the club best and fairest presentation which is usually held indoors on an evening at the Crown Casino with a lavish dinner. However, it’s a night that’s limited in numbers and given Covid-19 restraints, it’s likely that a much smaller number of attendees would be admitted. And of course, children usually miss out on the best and fairest because it goes on well into the night. A video package could be put together and shown on the MCG screens with highlights of every game and the votes in say four quarters each of 10 minutes to keep us football starved fans entertained before presentation of the Bluey to the winner.

And because footy’s a team game, that event could be followed by the presentation of our heroes - the 2021 AFL premiers and end with a welcome to the new members of our list including Luke Dunstan and the recently selected draftees to celebrate going forward into the future and our quest for next year’s premiership to be played at The Home of Football - the MCG.

Note: in true football tradition, I’m taking things one premiership celebration at a time.😀

Over to you …

Yep something like this sounds puuurty good.

But you left out a few of the most critical things...like...

👉 Free marathon spring rolls

👉 Hot jam donuts

👉 Frothies on tap

👉 Pie boys/girls wandering about

👉 "Drinks, chocolates, lollies and potatoe chip" vendors;

👉 A Coffee truck

👉 Dairy Bell ice cream vendor selling their mini bells; and

👉 Last but not least the peanut man... "peanuts.... get your peanuts!"

Lots to plan for this event let alone the schedule .

what time will it start and finish?

may take some time to enter the G with the phone app.

Will there be a stage on the non robbie flower wing and have 30 k  sitting in the GSS ?  Better for covid control if there are crowd limits .

Or will they put a stage in front the city goals end and let the crowd on the ground  like all previous sunday mornings post grand finals . less covid control friendly

Alot of us would want us to have a photo taken with cup , not the day , think there is a cup tour planned for that.

The usual sign the … with player x unlikely too , keep the players away from the masses ,too risky

for the day , play highlights of season  while ppl wait for the day  to start, a band ?
present the team etc , tributes to nathan  neale  etc plus to players who passed to early. Not sure how long these days go for 3 hours plus . Connecting with bluey may be one bridge too far

Good luck Garry on the planning for this.

P.S. ...

can we also get a few old boys up?

For starters Brian Dixon & Alan Johnson who were front and square in the fight to save the club during 96!!

Guest appearance from Ron at some point would be awesome as well.

Why?

They've had their time of recognition. This is about celebrating the present crop. Leave it at that.

Get Ron Barrassi to say a couple of words and even maybe Neale Daniher pending health.

Crowd numbers and restrictions esp distancing will still apply so some structuring in crowd flow will be needed so every supporter can enjoy the close involvement to personally thank the coach and players. Also to get memorabilia signed by players.

all the videos and the count can be streamed to locations around the city where smaller groups can congregate and celebrate after that contact.

MFC can sell this to the hospitality industry as an economic initiative to support that industry, partnerships with many restaurants and pubs in the city will lead to enhanced exposure and respect and maybe increase membership. We can also perhaps get deals for country supporters to stay in town and have reasonably priced meals etc

We have waited years for this celebration let's not waste it on one day and let's ensure we can involve all our members not just those who can afford the high priced events.

These celebrations are usually spontaneous and involve milling around.

None of that allowed these days.

Wonder what if anything Richmond did last year. (Did a google search and could find very little except this)

Not quite 'Saturday morning': Yesterday - too late to post then about it before the power went out and my internet access with it - I had, for the first time since '25/9', a flash of the pleasant feeling of Friday expectation of footy. Then I snapped back to October.

Had it been real, we'd certainly have been on the teev. And I think it means I'm ready for 2022!

Though I'm not letting go of 2021 just yet...

This reminds me of a banner the Dogs had at a home game vs Collingwood. It was like a menu. It said, “Hot Dogs, Cold Pies and Lukewarm Beveridges.”

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
