Dees flag 20 is spot on.

Can’t stand the bias that BT has against the dees.   He is a very poor commentator.  Makes plenty of incorrect predictions and statements during a game due to his bias and desire to be a “Wowee “ commentator.

Plenty of others would be better.  Luke Darcy for one.

I thought JB was quite good.

Having now watched the finals replays on numerous occasions, l think it is time we use our new found power in the AFL community to demand some changes in the leading commentary teams. The first to go must be BT. Not only is he so often factually wrong, but his understanding of basic tactics is so rudimentary as to be embarrassing. He is also quite open about his prejudice against the Dees. For instance:

1. l remember during the commentary for the game against Richmond on ANZAC eve last  when we were leading by over fifty points, James Brayshow suggested that Melbourne should be now favourite for the flag. BT’s reaction, “l will never believe that until Max Gawn holds up the cup in September, no matter how successful they are during the season”

2. He has no understanding of basic team tactics eg. during the GF Langdon gathered the ball on the half back flank and raced up the the wing with Kossie racing with an opponent from the centre to get in position  on the wing. Further up the field McDonald was racing towards the boundary line on the half forward flank with his opponent to give him an additional option. Langdon chose McDonald which prompted an outcry from BT saying he should have chosen Kossie (“l like Kossie” were l think his words). Several minutes later, Daisy Pearce, who was sharing the commentary with him and who has ten times his football sophistication, pointed out that he kicked it to half forward to lessen the risk of a turnover which could result in a goal to the bulldogs. Pretty basic football common sense but totally lost in his populist nonsense.

3  Angus Bradshaw: when the Dees were surging in the 3rd quarter of the Grannie, Brayshaw took an extremely courageous diving mark on the half forward flank about 45 metres out on a severe angle. If he goaled he would put us in front for the first time since early in the second quarter. He deliberately walked back slowly with his back to the play concentrating on what needed to be done to covert. BT went ballistic saying he needed to concentrate on the game. He clearly had no idea of Brayshaw’s history in poor accuracy in kicking for goal. In fact for much of the season he was having special tuition at training every week to improve his goal kicking at Choco’s skills academy and clearly was using that to ensure he nailed it. He did, which was a key part of our resurgence. The deliberate slow walk back was part of the process to ensure successful convergence. If BT had just basic football knowledge he would have known that.

4 Neal-Bullen marked 40 metres out in the last quarter when we were six or seven goals up. BT said he has to kick this so that the side will be able to enjoy the rest of the game, but if he doesn’t they won’t. This of course was totally nonsensical,. This can be bracketed with his ridiculous comment with five minutes to go saying “not a single person had left the ground”. How could he possibly know that?—- and it was said very dogmatically.

I’m sure there are other examples that others could add to this list.

We can do a lot better than BT. Time has passed both him and Eddie Maguire by. With much more sophisticated, and/or younger commentators (eg James Brayshaw, Daisy Pearce, Gerard Wheatley, Nick Riewoldt) providing much more nuanced commentary on a game which has become much more complex and subtle over the last 20 years, there is no long longer room for these dinosaurs.

I propose we keep a record of all our examples of these incompetencies on Demonland, publicise them, and build a case for BT’s removal. We can do a lot better.

Agree and do you know who I would like to be Boundary rider/Special Comments man?????????

our very own NATHAN JONES!! Speaks well , knows the game and players and would provide a sense of realism and brevity, not to mention current footballing knowledge!! Plus he is GENUINE! People relate to that!

Where were you guys when fellow grandstanders Sandy Roberts, Peter Landy and Michael Williamson big-noted themselves  through the long seasons of black and white telly? The mighty BT is streets ahead. Television has to appeal to a broader demographic, not just 'centre-clearance analysts'.

PS Bush Demon goes Bang, bang, bang, bang.

As a second post-script I don't suppose anyone here remembers BT on 3UZ with a character called 'Rocky' - this was BT on training wheels - truly humble and not prone to hyperbole or over-statement.

I concur with what he said in point 1.

Same. Ch 7 commentary sucks and not a bt fan. Best commentary was final against Brisbane Jason Richardson just calls games but amazing but didn't get in the way and make it about him. Hamish can't stand the bloke in presentation mode but is passable commentating and generally just calls the play

That was more than 50 years ago. Surely we can be a little more modern…..

If you don't like BT turn down the sound on your device, it's just theatre nothing more. We are lucky to have free games, you can also go to kayo.

I object to mediocrity wherever it is, especially when it is forced on us by the Murdochs. The AFL grand final is now a major global TV sporting event and the international showcase of our great game. We should object to having that fronted by such a mediocrity as BT, especially when there are plenty of other more highly competent younger alternatives.

BT is good for a laugh !

I’d be happy to keep him as long as he defers to Daisy …… let’s say …… most of the time !

I agree. I just don't get the absolute hate for BT pretty much across the board. I realise I'm in the tiny minority here.

I'd put Brayshaw way below BT - just so annoying with that gravelly, uber-bloke-ish commentary completely lacking any insight or even humour. The 'Bang bang' call in the GF was his only good moment in the whole season that I can remember.

At least BT has humour, just don't expect insight from him - he can leave that to the others like Daisy.

Where BT grates me is when he throws in his own comments rather than commentating on the game. I think his general commentary on the play is up to scratch, it’s just when he makes his own special comments that he goes off track. He has a group of experts to defer to for special comments and most of the like they get it bang on. Leppa, Hodge, as our own Daisy all give great insights.

Stick to who’s got the ball, who’s taken the mark, and who’s kicked the goal.

I thought Brayshaw was good for the most part on the night, stuck to his role.

Some other ones (going off memory so might not be exact):

"Melbourne fans in that pocket must be feeling unbelievably"

"Bullen from 47"

He also called the centre square the goalsquare, and was easily the most disruptive of the commentary team. Would yell over the top of others giving insights to the game to say something devoid of substance like "GEE, WHAT A GAME".

Also there were multiple times that Daisy would give some genuinely good insight and BT would just reply "WOW". Almost condescending. Too often he tries to force his personality and opinions in, just call the game mate.

And he absolutely does hate the Dees - a nightmare commentary match-up would be BT commentating the Dees vs 22 Tom Hawkins, would be absolutely insufferable

Can't stand BT. He thinks he is funny and entertaining but he is tiresome and loves the boys club banter which takes away from the game and drives me nuts.

I celebrated when McAvaney left but didn't dream it could get worse!

Bring in recent ex footballers who understand the game and specialist commentators to support them. Daisy is great, Abbey is good as a boundary rider, Hodge is pretty good, Hudson is good, I don't mind Whateley, There are a plethora of better options.

It's just shattering to think we'll never get the privilege of hearing Cometti call a game again. Saddens me deeply

Cometti is/was an absolute gem of a commentator. He never strayed from his role, which is play by play, but his little bits of personality were the cherry on top to what was happening.

Sadly the up-and-coming heir to the throne of main commentator for Seven would have to Hamish McLachlan, can’t stand him.

The real problem is that if BT was removed they would replace him with someone similar.

Perhaps scope for some new commentators to break in via community radio that marketed itself as an alternative tv commentary.

And of course we need someone to invent an app to synch the radio and the TV.

While Push red for Ed on Foxtel was discontinued it was a groundbreaker on how we could do things

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
