Freo are trying to force us to take 13 and a future 1st for Jackson.

Wouldn't surprise me if they trade out or try to trade out 13 and screw us even further

I trust that Lamb and Taylor are speaking with some of Freo's more fancied players to put the heat on Bell

Many watchers are saying this draft tapers off significantly after the first 5-6 picks. Hope we can work back into that range

Yeah, I’m of the view that if we can’t get a pick inside 5 (accounting for Ashcroft bid) you can almost throw a blanket over the next 25. If Freo can’t do a deal that gives us a chance of getting that very high pick, then take 13 & two futures.

Losing overall draft value to end up selecting with pick in the 6-10 range isn’t worth it this year in my opinion.

How do you know that?

Maybe targeted is the wrong word because clearly we would’ve reached out to a bunch of players but ‘arranged’ or ‘lined up’ or whatever word is better. I’d be absolutely shocked if there’s a hidden player just waiting for the Jackson trade.

DO we have a plan for pick 13??

I'd like to think we package it with one of our (or freos) F1 to move up this year

We also don't know whether something might pop up suddenly after the Jackson trade has been completed.

The way Fremantle operate though, this'll probably go down to the wire and there won't be any time post Jackson trade to utilise what we get in any other way.

i really hope so! Looking at who is touted at this spot doesn't really excite

Eagles looking at giving 2 to North, in a deal to get JHF and Rioli to Port with them getting Port's 8 and F1st.

They think they will get the boy they want at 8, likely Reuben Gibney from WA.

That just puts them out of the LJ trade and we are left fighting with Freo.

Not looking flash for us atm.

I would also back North to use 2 on Cadman.

I personally think they will try and on trade the F1 to get another Rd 1 this season and take 2 from Busslinger, Ginbey and Hewitt

13 + F1 + north’s F2 isnt too bad, but doesnt get us the Cadman.  We have a potential midrange fs next year, so going early there might suit to strike before brown comes into play.  Need to improve this year’s pick significantly before it will get done, either by being able to trade up or they get it in.

I agree, it doesn't get us The Cadillac, which is disappointing, but we have JVR and Tmac coming in in 2023 and maybe even Petty up forward for cameos. Perhaps Lamb and Taylor also have eyes on the 2023 draft which is meant to be a ripper. That would net us our 1st (18!) and Fre's 1st (12ish) and Norf's 2nd (20ish). That's a very good hand in a strong draft.

I still think the key to us improving next year is a strong preseason and an exceptional run with injuries throughout the season

I wouldn't be relying too much on T Mac next year.Reliabilty post another foot injury is a real concern in my view.  We need ready made replacements for all our tall forwards.

I'm actually amazed anyone even discuss's TMac or BBBB as integral to our forward half next year.

I love the idea of getting Cadman but it's high risk as we have to give up a lot and there's a good chance (like many key forwards) he will be a bust.  Impossible to judge, but if the talent pool of this draft is shallow, where would he be ranked in other drafts?

He will also likely need a few years before he makes an impact at AFL level.  I think if JVR is ready to play 15  games and Petty is tried forward (if Turner can play his role in defence) this will be enough.  Gawn will likely play forward and TMac / BBB will come in only if their form demands it.

Surely our needs would be better served by targeting someone who can play wing / half forward next year - would need to have 2 of the following 3 qualities to replace what we already have (excellent speed, excellent disposal skills, excellent endurance).

Yep they’ll take Warlord and Cadman 1 & 2.

After Ashcroft.

Sheezel at 4? Tsatas at 5?

How is pick 2 going to North? JHF has done f-all and is a midfielder who come a dime a dozen all because he was pick 1? pfft.

I don't mind if we keep Jackson for another year and he becomes the free agent, if we don't get what we want for him.

We have his contract and if they want it then they should fork up.

Play him on the wing, and encourage him to sign with us, saying Freo or WC don't value him and will stuff him around. Gives him another year to get over his home sickness.

Play hard ball MFC.

Must say this thought has entered my mind. I suppose the difference is that JFH is contracted for another year.

If this fiasco has taught us anything I hope we sign Kozzie soon !!

Might want to read up on trades, free agency and contracts

Where do I do this?

Does it say we have to get the trade done, after a player gives a request?

Why can't we just keep him?

He's out of contract.
That's the key part of why we hold less leverage than say North do with Jason Horne-Francis, who is under contract and they can therefore hold him to his contract.

All the rules and EBAs are on the web. Easy peazy.

Take your point DS. Having watched a fair bit of Norf this year (me mate is mad Norf), there was nothing I saw that indicates JHF will not be, at a minimum, an 'A-grader'. If he avoids serious injuries, is coached well, AND is seriously committed, he's a superstar in the making. He's genuinely tough to boot. Just my opinion though. :-)

It’s funny as I also put Rowell in the same bucket and he’s had a few extra years in the system (admittedly some of it injured)   . Dominated junior footy, but his impact on the game is not as good a so thought it would be.

Given WA is a two team town, what's to stop Freo and WCE doing a deal which seems lopsided but with a player.  Not unlike Freo trading Lachie Weller to the Suns and receiving pick 2 a few years back.  eg

WCE trade pick 2 to Freo and in return Freo trade 13 and Player X (an average player).

WCE and Freo "try" to do a deal with Melbourne but can't come to an arrangement by the end of the trade period.

LJ says to Melbourne he's really sorry but he is homesick - it's not his fault that a deal wasn't done.  LJ goes into PSD and given he's already moved to WA, North don't pick him.  So WCE get him for merely a pick slide (or whatever the deal is) and Freo boost their draft hand.  Everyone wins... except us.

We would say they draft tampered but they say we just don't appreciate the value of Player X.  Given the AFL turns a blind eye to teams that do dodgy things, they would probably waive it through.

Could that happen?

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
