The same way as 2022:

• 2023 first for two lower 2023 first.
• 2023 first for one 2022 first and one lower 2023 first
• 2023 first for one 2023 first and two 2023 second.

So many scenarios.

We may not have a choice but two accept a top 10 pick and another first rounder.  It is a damn sight better than anything Freo can put on the table.

Absolutely it does. If he nominates Freo, he will get to Freo one way or another.

I honestly can't recall an occasion recently when an out of contract high profile player was not traded to the club of his clearly communicated choice. Would love to hear an example to the contrary.

The draft pick exchanges can involve several clubs to get to the end result with any combo of picks as long as they stay in the AFL rules.

I know it can involve several clubs, but I don't see how it's possible to trade 1 future first round pick for 2 future first round picks from 2 separate teams. Doesn't add up.

For LJ he fulfils both current and future needs so any equitable trade needs to do the same.

Someone who can impact now and is presumably 28+ and is in top 15 bracket of their club and then we need a pick that fairly represents his future worth, which is a top 3 pick. 

Eagles can offer us that, Freo cannot.

I don't think I'm saying anything profound, but draft picks are a lottery.   Pick 3's who have proved themselves are not.  I'm not sure how many top 5 picks = Jackson.  If there is a trade, surely a fair deal requires  both picks and an established good player.

No it hasn't, and that is what is holding things up. 

We don't know what the salary cap will be, so we don't know how much money we can offer, especially if we are pushing up against the cap at the moment.  Other clubs have space, ala Carlton last year, so they can put money on the table. Likewise clubs like Geelong will likely see Selwood retire so they know they have space already.

I understand this argument. 

But with Jason Taylor and Tim Lamb at the helm I have supreme confidence we would nab an absolute gun with an early pick.

Haven't given up on retaining him but doesn't sound great at the moment. If he does decide to leave, I can only hope he looks after us as much as Cerra looked after freo. We spent pick 3 and have him as a centre piece for life post Max. Luke leaving would disrupt our list management significantly and would result in us needing to maximise our return from him to cover our ruck and tall depth issues. So if he's truly deciding between us and his family back in WA, then he should be open to both clubs and look after our interests by dealing with the club that presents the best trade offer to us. It's the least he can do after we have given him the start to a career which includes a premiership and tutelage under the best ruck in the game.

True. With Jackson they would certainly be fr some years to come. But can they trade for him? or pay him what he’s after? We couldn’t get the Cerra deal done I can’t see how they would be able to do this one either. Unless Im missing something?

I don't buy the argument that the EBA is holding things up. Jako could easily commit to the club, and just say that the details have to be finalised. Goody's comments suggest that there is  no commitment from Jackson to re-sign.

Brayshaw is the best young player in the game imo

What's with this pressure to return home by young adults to be near family and friends?  Our kids buzzed off to pursue careers and other things and have made new friends wherever they went. And without the sort of money in the bank that AFL players can have (if they have any sense).  They still keep in touch with old friends and family which these days is 1000 times easier than it was only 25 years ago.  Do footy players never grow up?

Yeah, I'm probably a rotten parent.

And the cap for 2023 and beyond impacts what Clarry's next contract will be $$ wise. Tim Lamb will be earning his wage managing the list while the window is wide open.

I wonder if the May incident has thrown a spanner in the works in recent times.
