Evidently I've missed the mark here. I am not this Craig bloke tho.

Fair enough if you think it would be cringe, what is the reason for that?

Is it too foreign? I too don't want AFL to become too americanised but you cant tell me that the AFL cheer squad chants are much chop (melbourne *clap clap clap*)

Welcome and first post sure ignited some interest.

I have never undetstood the INXS thing at port games. They are a perth band originally and the lyrics just pander to power's inadequacy and outdated us against them mentality. IMO.

Leave it all down to the grand ol flag. And if the trumpeter ever resurfaces, as the great Terry Wallace said once  "...I'll spew up..." and take out a restraining order.

Tough crowd mate, you’ve had a great “welcome” to posting on Deeland. Keep posting.

Only interested in one tradition in 2022. Unfurling the Flag!!

Me too DZ but will we be able too?

Exactly, this thread must have been created by someone who has never been to a home game...

Give it a rest, as he said he’s missed the mark but it’s his first post, maybe let them settle in before slippering them.

We have a song, and when we are back at the M.C.G every one of us will be singing our lungs out, you might have heard of it, if not let me help you out.

It's a grand old flag!😏

As a Victory supporter, I;m part of the crowd that sings Stand By Me before every home game. It actually creates a great atmosphere when you've got a packed house. Given we had a link with Liverpool for a bit it would have been great to go with You'll Never Walk Alone instead.

Also as part of the standing room crowd behind the goals we also had a bit of a tradition singing Horses in like the 59th minute or something. That was good fun

I really want us to run out to Megadeth’s ‘Public Enemy Number 1’. It shall be so much fun being hated now, instead of pitied as before!

As I said in the previous post on this topic, as long as a cow bell is present in the song, I'm in.

Why would we copy some other club's tradition? We might as well stick "yellow and black" in our club song words because it's always pretty cool to hear that being roared out.

The "never walk alone" thing grew organically out of Liverpool. Hard to see it really take off here in Oz. I do know that other clubs around the world have adopted it, but that's a level of fake-ossitude that I think we don't need to be part of. Cultural cringe, if you like.

Any "tradition" we end up with will emerge by itself without controls. I'm not against an intro song, but the crowd will decide if they want that, and if so, what song. Happy for the club to try out some, see what sticks. The song Goodwin used from the musical ... "This is me" ... (in another thread) ... would be a good starting point because it emerged from within the club without anyone trying to steer it. It has some meaning to this team as it was used as part of the drive to the flag. Not imposed because someone got the shivers watching another club do it on TV.

It's possible to do two things at once: admire what other clubs around the world do, and not feel the urge to grab a bit of that for ourselves.

Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga sing it. In Deutch naturlich.

We could always go with a soccer chant during the game

my favourite when I lived in the uk was “you’re [censored] and you know you are” (obviously directed at the opposition)

Dude reckons he’s a long time lurker. Look at his profile. He joined Demonland LAST NIGHT.
Nice of you to try to make him feel welcome, Cards 13, but you’re wasting your time. He’s a trouble-maker. End of story.

Edit: mods, give me a warning if you feel it warranted. But I won’t retract what I’ve said about this person.

To be fair, this poster might have 'lurked' without joining, if you know what I mean?

On the topic, it did remind me of something I've always wondered.

Where did the "WHAT DO WE SING?" part of the song come from? Was it always there? It feels like something that organically became a tradition at some point, can anyone shed some light?

Back in 1979, we did a number on Richmond at the MCG. After the game, supporters and cheer squad members, probably a hundred of us, gathered on the ground at the entrance to the player's race, and sang the following song:

Hooray for Richmond,

Hooray at last,

Hooray for Richmond,

For they're the horse's a&%e (rhymes with 'last').

Don't be mistaken,

Don't be misled,

They're not the horse's a&%e,

They're the horse's head.

Does anyone remember this or was at the ground that day?

Hey Mate,

Yes I joined last night, as it was the first time I had needed an account, to post.

It was just a friendly suggestion , really don't know why you're getting so worked up about it. There's obviously no need to worry as there is no support for my idea.

I actually do get to a lot of home games, and to clarify, My post wasn't about you'll never walk alone. It was about the possibility of furthering the game day experience.

You sound like a lovely person, Have a nice night!

Yes, but the ACDC version please.

I actually think the acoustics of this song reverberate around the MCG pretty well and that it builds the energy and sets the scene for the players to run out to pretty well, before it morphs into It's a Grand Old Flag.

Really looking forward to this playing at our first home game next year at the MCG in front of a packed house, full of Demons supporters.  Already has the hairs standing up on the back of my neck thinking about it!!

Welcome aboard @CP38and3 .  I'm not sure I'd personally go along with your suggestions, but just my take.

Whatever pre game entertainment we get next season, hopefully it will be great just to get all the Demons supporters back at the G and unveil the flag on the first game of the season - now there is a traditional I'd like to start again!!

Seems like a close call, may need a poll to decide it.

Welcome to Demonland,  unfortunate first post.

The sport is the entertainment. Other than that, meeting whomever you meet at the game that week and chatting about what’s to come was always enough me. Now you’ve gotta compete with “match day experiences” and horrible music and advertising.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
