There are so many threads I could post this in but I feel it deserves its own

It gives me goose bumps and brings tears to my eyes.  I'm not sure which of the two expressions moves me the most.  Both say so much.

The caption 'Youre a good man, the players love you' is what Roffey said to Goodwin at the start of the season to help him build belief in himself. 

What beautiful, quite and inspiring words. 

Another thing she said to him was:  'Be yourself', which became Goodwin's mantra/advice to the players through the finals.

Keep in mind that at the time externally, Goodwin's job was seen as being in jeopardy.  If ever a man needed support and belief, that was it.  Kate stepped up to the plate.

This year our club has been built on 'Team', 'Support', 'Belief, and 'Selflessness'.  And it starts right at the top with our President. 

My admiration for her and her wisdom has gone through the roof.

    Simon needed the right people around him. To remove the President,  mid Season with Kate was a ballsy move, but it will go down as a masterstroke

    Glenn’s leaving was amicable both ways i have been told, so it didn’t cause waves in the media.

    5 of the last 6 premierships have been won by clubs presided over by women.

    It could be a coincidence, or it could be that it's time to bring in more women into administrative roles at football clubs.

    Was awesome seeing her in the change rooms having a beer and then getting interviewed by Garry Lyon.

    Kate was asked when will Melbourne fans get to see the players and the cup.

    She said her dream would be to have an event at the G, replay the game and re-present the medals (hoping I heard that right).

    Then I saw this mcc-keen-to-welcome-dees-for-fans-celebration

    Kate's dream may not come to fruition and any event may depend on covid restrictions and MCC prep for the cricket season.

    The article reminded me of our DL angst over recent years of where would we go to celebrate a GF the day after?

    It won't be the day after but we have the answer:  Our spiritual home:  The MCG.  Imagine the MCG full of only Demon supporters!

    5 of the 6 last premierships were won with female presidents. Won on merit and not because they were women. 

    No tokens.

    I'm intermittently working on some day publishing a paper - working title 'The Curie-Johnson effect' named after Marie Curie and NASA's Katherine Johnson. It is not specifically about women but it examines the idea that where a group is generally excluded from participation or progress in a particular area, then it stands to reason that the exceptions must be, well, exceptional!

    I like to imagine it as an alternative to the highly problematic methods such as 'affirmative action' and tokenistic recruiting, in that to the extent that a person has overcome resistance to achieve in their field it is a valid demonstration of both their ability and their character which can legitimately be considered in a selection process.

    Right now, with the likes of Daisy Pearce in commentary and Kate Roffey in club leadership, the AFL is seeing a breakthrough wave of women who have had both the ability and the resilience to push to the top against all kinds of resistance.

    For a while there will likely be a pattern of women outperforming men at the very top level roles in football. With time as women's presence in football leadership is normalised (touch wood) the women in leadership will also just be 'normal' at the same standard as men.

    Women can't all be Daisy Pearce... somewhere out there is the female equivalent of BT.

    Good on Kate, but the credit really should go to Glen Bartlett.  He is the President that took us from the sh_it heap to the clusp of a Premiership. Kate was the lucky successor who took over with the hard work already completed.

    Yeah, you heard that right. Kate said she’d love this to happen asap, as soon as restrictions are lifted. She said we’re not the sort of club that says ‘Don’t touch the Cup!’ She reckons it’s already been dropped and knocked about quite a bit, already got a couple of little dents. 

    Another thing about Kate: you know how every so often you stop and think, ‘did that really happen? Did we really win the premiership?’ I know I’m still doing that, probs will be for a while yet. Well, Kate said that’s happening to her, and it takes for her to see a pic of herself and one of the players holding the cup for her to think, ‘yep, that really happened.’ Very relatable.

    This morning I got up walk out picked up the HUN and said to my wife " we won the bloody Grand Final".

    Last year I recall Bartlett scorching Goodwin and the players publicly and by all accounts completely blindsided them.  Deserved?  Possibly.  But that behaviour was the antithesis of building teamwork, support and to engender belief in people.

    Last year Bartlett put a real dent in our culture.  Roffey, as outlined in the Offsiders, has repaired it.

    I think that's quiet a sexist comment. I'd have thought supporters would be wrapped if we got an outstanding person regardless of gender or any other particular classification.

    No it’s not. They said ‘if’.

    If the best person for ceo is a woman that would be great. If the best person isn’t a woman then that’s fine too

    We we’re 3-5 with losses to the Eagles in Perth, Geel, Rich, Brisbane by under a goal in Queensland in a heartbreaker and got smashed by Port off a 4 day break.

    We’d lost to the top 5 teams in the comp all in neutral or away locations.

    The Port game was very disappointing but grandstanding about it changed nothing. We won the next 2 games which we were always going to do against the cellar dwellers, then had an up and down finish to the year.

    We needed another summer of Burgo, better assistant coaches, maturing players to take ownership, a few more pieces of the puzzle in Brown and Bowey and the coach to hold his nerve. 

    Kennett style internal drama only works if you really want a footy department to ignore the President and go through a Dunstall type figure. It’s better to have everyone working together which is why the Board saw a chance to make a change after the fast start this year.

    Let's just hope this is the start of an era of competent Presidents, Boards & CEO's for the Club as they have been few & far between in my time. Kate has certainly been impressive so far.

    I'll change to Less Cranky after we get a 3peat.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
