It’s a fair bit of a stretch to tie this to the GF loss.

If ever a player loves himself more its this guy !

You can place your hands on a player back, but not obviously extend or push them is my understanding

Would have been interesting to see the decision if he'd pushed Bowey into the goalpost.

It's funny the more I see the gf replay the more I just cannot believe we did it. I just sit there saying we actually did it.Β

Can we get back to discussing the greatest game in our history?

I dont want us to look back on this thread in a couple of years and see pages of comments about ads for dating Asian women or shoes or whatever. That would plain embarrassing. Like discussing the quality of cheeseboards or something.

For me I have been super impressed on my multiple watchings with Tom Sparrow. Love his attack on the footy, his positioning, his toughness and his kicking. We have an absolute beauty there.

Have you met him PF? He’s a quality young bloke, goes to his local junior footy club which my boys play at on a regular basis in his own time and has even run water for junior matches. He’s very approachable to the young kids.

Bailey Smith is a perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. No doubt his looks will attract the attention of nuffies trying to make a name for themselves out and about in offseasonΒ

He reminds me of Trac....certainly how he kicks a fifty m goal off one step.

Hes a strong player for his age.

Maybe he and jj are the next super mfc duo like Cp and Co.

It’s amazing that with every rewatching you see more and more things to appreciate. On Sparrow, as well as Rivers and Bowey, amongst others, you see how determined and focussed they are even when not involved in a particular passage of play.Β
Anyways, that’s my excuse for watching it soooooo many times. 😁

I wonder how our team compares to other premier teams.

Has there been much media analysis of this?

Ie if we are as good as lions were with their three on the trot etc.

I guess given players ages we are certainly a flag fave for next year but is this team up there with the best and a shot of winning three?

I could get used to this winning feeling.

Also I was wondering about our round 23 win against splats and how easy it could have gone the other way.

At such a large halftime margin down at the infamous Kardinia park i could understand the players thinking this game is gone. I also think if there was a crowd we would have lost.

So if the cats did remain on that halftime trajectory a ten goal thumping at least would be understandable. I wonder if that would have an affected us going into finals .

Certainly it would have changed the teams we play. I guess that last h and a game was more spectaculiar in more ways than one.Β

Im sure it lingered in not a few cats players minds in the prelim as well.

I hope we get to play the cats round one next year.

All started with what they let Wawrick Capper get away with.
I didn't have a problem with Johaniesons other than the fact I was going into a dark tunnel at the time.
The AFL doesn't want to lose the spectacular mark.
They're not as regular as they once were due to the way the game is played so they let abit more go.
A big mark is advertising gold to the americans for eg.

As for Browns.
He's allowed to hold his ground, reckon the timing of the Bulldogs jump was bad for him.
And I've watched Hawkins get away with that week after week so ..... "YES BROWNY, C'MON DEMONS!!!! "Β

Correct, they started to let go hands on the shoulders due to Capper, before that it was a free kick against.

Does anyone on here need to fess up that they cracked it after the Bonts goal and stormed out only to check the score at 3/4 time and think WTF.

I retreated from the family lounge into my bedroom and sulked watching it there.

Not for long though.

I wonder how Adam T gets back in the side?

A nice problem to have but one nonetheless.

I guess it depends what team we play but you cant say Petty comes out for him.

AlsoΒ  I cant wait to see Kozzie keep improving. Was hot snd cold this year...mostly good but I reckon he will be a superstar.

Tomlinson will probably miss the first 6 rounds and then Hibberd is the most likely to make way.Β  But then again Bowey is still young and he may not be ready for a 22+ game season and might be rested at times.

Kozzie was an under the radar star in the GF.Β  His harassing of a bulldog player (Williams??) on the boundary directly resulted in the Spargo goal.Β  Early in the game he dumped Dunkley, stood over him and gave him a spray for good measure.Β  He again targeted Dunkley which resulted in Petracca having enough space to line up his 'soccer' goal.Β  Bear in mind there is about 20cm and 20 kg difference between Kozzie and Dunkley.Β  Fearless!Β Β

There were many 'moments' of aggression in the GF by Kozzie but they do not show up in any mainstream stats.Β  I onlly noticed them on re-watching the game.Β  Absolutely love his work when off the ball.Β Β

And he dispossed Weightman which led to Bowey kick to Gus brave mark and goal

I did this. 19 points down was too much to bear. I went outside and smoked a cigarette and cried. My sons know me so well, all three of them (including the one who lives in Poland and the one who lives with me and was in his bedroom at the time) were texting me and telling me not to give up. None of them get into footy but they were all checking the scores coz they know how much it means to me. I didn’t have to wait until 3-qtr time though. The middle son messaged me β€œmum get back inside! It’s 58 to 59!!!” I’ve never moved so fast in my life. And I am so glad I did coz I got to see the goal-fest live. πŸ™‚

So 3 direct goal assists we can add to Kozzie's own GF goals.Β  The Gus goal and the Petracca 'soccer' goal were pivotal to us getting back into and control of the game.Β  We never looked back.Β  Β

On Weightman.Β  Anyone else think he should have gone off for a concussion test in the first qtr.Β  His head collided with the goal post at about a meter high then he cannoned head first into the ground.Β  He got up, looked quite ashen and for a kid who had just come back from concussion I couldn't understand why they kept him on (other than not wanting to be a player short early in the game when there is no tomorrow).

I really felt for the kid.Β  Never seemed go get into the game and his usual spark was completely absent.

Told my daughter "one more and that might be it".

Sister in law text me "Nervous?".

By the time I had answered, Fritsch had kicked 2 and I replied "feeling better now".

I cracked it a bit where I slammed my hand against the armrest sending the cat into a skittish run out the door but held myself down thinking the margin isn’t the worst we’ve had to come back from. When we hit to the front and were a goal up I thought β€œok let’s hold this and regroup for a massive last quarter” so glad the the players got their killer instinct and powered on. I could not believe how quickly it changed!

Maybe NQR but still up to his old trick of playing for the free. After being dispossed in the Kickett tackle Weightman flopped forward causing Kickett to fall on top of him. Luckily the umpire wasn’t fooled. No sympathy from me.Β

Having watched he replay a few times I have noticed just how good Viney was.

He had an enormous game tackling, getting the hard ball to advantage for his teammates and creating space for his teammates with one in particular I remember which gave Harmes the opportunity to get the ball and hit Fritch lace out which atarted our comeback.Β

Viney is Melbourne royalty and deserves all his success. I am really happy for him.Β

I nearly cracked it after Gawn was tossed by the dwarf. They were toying with us at that stage. Couldn’t sit down anymore and got out of my seat and watched the miracle unfold from the aisle.Β

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.Β They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season.Β Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table.Β The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hopeΒ that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, MelbourneΒ captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atΒ Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.Β  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aΒ career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),Β nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.Β
